APU (Auxiliary Power Unit)

Self-contained gas turbine engine in the tail, can be used to operate APU Generator and supply bleed
air for engine start and 2 air-conditioning packs.
On-ground APU can supply left and right air-conditioning pack.
In flight APU can only supply one pack.
APU inlet located on the right side of tail section, exhaust through tail.
Electronic Control Unit (ECU)
Control and monitor APU
Automatic shutdown
Automatic pressure control for engine start and air-conditioning
APU limitation
APU can be started and operated up to 41,000 ft
Electrical power to 2 transfer buses up to 41,000 ft
Bleed air up to 17,000 ft
Electrical power + bleed air up to 10,000 ft
During ground operation, APU suction feeds fuel from fuel tank 1.
For extended operation, the APU should got fuel from the left center tank. The left center tank will
supply fuel if the left center fuel pump is turned on.
The APU is cooled by external air flow through a cooling air inlet above the APU exhaust outlet. The
air circulate through the APU compartment, passes through oil cooler and vents through oil cooler and
vents through exhaust outlet.
To start APU use either
115 Volts AC
28 Volts DC
APU switch, APU EGT and status light located on overhead panel.
APU annunciator light

APU GEN OFF BUS

Maintenance problem, APU can be operated

On early in start sequence
- Other times causes automatic shutdown
Several possible problem
- Automatic shutdown
- APU fuel valve does not close after shutdown
Over speed or loss over speed protection
- Automatic shutdown
APU up to speed and can accept a load

In flight, the galley buses are automatically disconnected when the APU generator is the only source of
electrical power. On the ground APU tries to energize all systems, unless the load is too large.
If the load still too great the electrical power for the main buses is removed, 1 bus at a time.
