Cylinder Liner Wear Measuring Update

1) MAN B&W Diesel A/S introduced new measuring points for cylinder liner wear on their K/L/S-MC/MC-C engines to better assess wear profiles. 2) The original 8 measuring points were redefined, with 3 additional points introduced to improve coverage of the long stroke S-engines. 3) A modified Cylinder Condition Report sheet is recommended to record relevant parameters from piston overhauls.

Cylinder Condition Report
New Measuring Points for Cylinder Liner Wear
Dear Sirs,
When introducing the L-MC/MCE type engines in the beginning of
the eighties, we transferred the definitions for measuring
points for cylinder wear from the L-GB engines.
The definitions of the eight levels were:
Pos.
Pos.
Pos.
Pos.
Pos.

1-4 coincide with the piston rings in TDC.

5
coincides with the level of the lubricating oil
quills.
6
the position at which the top piston ring reaches
the highest piston speed.
7
just above the scavenge ports.
8
below the 4th ring in BDC.

On the L-MC engines, the above levels give a reasonably even

distribution of the measuring points, and thus a good picture
of the wear profile along the running surface.
However, on the K-MC engines and, in particular, on the
S-MC engines, the above positions are not optimal, and we have
therefore decided to adjust the measuring points accordingly.
In order to cover the long stroke of the S-engines, we have
found it beneficial to introduce three additional measuring
points. At the same time, we have omitted the position that
corresponds to the highest piston speed as, in some engine
sizes, this position is very close to the level of the
lubricating oil quills.

Pos.

1-4 coincide with the piston rings in TDC.

5-6 are evenly spaced between positions 4 and 7.
7
coincides with the level of the lubricating oil
quills, i.e. the same position as the previous
pos. 5.
8-9 are evenly spaced between positions 7 and 10.
10 just above the scavenge ports, i.e. the same
position as the previous pos. 7.
11 placed below the 4th ring in BDC.

We enclose our sheet "Measuring points for cylinder liner

wear", which specifies the measuring points for each engine
type. We recommend that you introduce the new measuring points
and that you correct the templates for cylinder liner measuring
accordingly.
We should further like to introduce our modified version of the
sheet "Cylinder Condition Report". We propose that you use this
sheet in connection with every piston overhaul so as to ensure
the recording of the most relevant parameters.
You are most welcome to send copies of these cylinder condition
reports to our office, where the reports will be used in the
statistical follow-up on the engines.
