A. Background
The Kutai Basin has been the site of numerous significant oil and gas discoveries,
and it has been one of major hydrocarbon provinces of Indonesia since the 19th
century. Most of the hydrocarbon production in Mahakam Delta comes with the
fluvial delta depositional system. The study of the Modern Mahakam Delta was
initated by Total Indonesiein 1973 and continues to the present day. The research
usually comes from the Miocene outcrop in Delta Mahakam which has been
evolutioning until now. The evolution formed in very low wave energy, moderate
tides and a fluvial regime. This condition was controlled regional geology of
Mahakam Delta which is in the passive continental margin.
The modern Mahakam Delta is relatively unaffected by the human activities in
accesible for research for deltaic depotitional system, as we know that Mahakam
Delta has been a role model for deltaic system. The unique of Mahakam Delta is
where Mahakam Delta was in mixed between fluvial and tide dominated deltaic
system in its natural state. The main source rock depotitional environmental system
is in the distributary channel, distributary mouth bars and the delta plain can all be
investigated within a single days boat trip from Samarinda.
The main control of the Mahakam Delta is sedimentology and stratigraphy, and some
minor structure control, it happens because the tectonic setting in Mahakam Delta.
By this acknowledgment was the factors why we choose to make a field trip to
Mahakam Delta, so we can deliver our knowledge of the sedimentation system.
B. Event

C. Theme
Based on our background stated above, we decide to propose the Sedimentation
and Stratigraphy of Mahakam Delta in Relation with Petroleum System.
D. Purpose and Target
a. Purpose :
General Purpose:
1. To enrich knowledge of field and growing interest for field activities among the
ITB Geology students and Geoscience society.
2. To extend knowldege related to hidrocarbon depositional system, in this matter
Modern Mahakam Delta.
3. Able to arrange a guide book which can be useful for comprehensive geology
understanding in the teritory.
Spesific Purpose:
1. Enrich knowledge general geology of Mahakam Delta and compare it with the
literature.
2. Find and collect newest data in the development of Mahakam Delta.
3. Find and collect data of sandstone characteristic in every fasies depotition.
4. Find and collect data paleofacies in Miosen Delta Mahakam.
5. Create stratigraphic chart from the location that has been decided.

b. Target :
1. Extend knowledge regarding hydrocarbon depositional system, in this matter
Modern Mahakam Delta.
2. Gain knowledge of field and growing interest for field activities among the ITB
Geology students and Geoscience society.
3. Could make a resume about Mahakam Delta and share to other student else in
Geological Engineering ITB.
F. Participant
The participants of Delta Mahakam Field Trip are members of AAPG Student Chapter
ITB. The quota of the participant is 20, that consists of 19 students and 1 lecturer.

G. Time and Place
The Delta Mahakam Field Trip 2016 will be held on 13-18 November 2016.The place
is on Delta Mahakam, East Kalimantan.

13 November 2016: Arrive at Balikpapan, and directly go to Samarinda
14 November 2016: Observe outcrops stratigraphy and sedimentology of
Samarinda Anticline Lower Miocene and Middle Miocene
15 16 November 2016: Observe outcrops stratigraphy and sedimentology of
Samarinda Anticline Lower Miocene and Middle Miocene
16 November 2016: Observe outcrops stratigraphy and sedimentology of
Samarinda Anticline - Lower Miocene and Middle Miocene
17 November 2016: Observe fluvial channel, distributary channel delta front
mouthbar and tidal channel
18 November 2016: Observe Stadion Utama section in Pallaran, synthesis of
the field trip and back to Bandung

K. Closing Address
The Delta Mahakam field trip 2016 can give a lot of opportunities for students to
receive more knowledge and enhance their perception outside the classes. We believe
that this program is important for those who want to be a geologist. It also gives a
great opportunity to establish good relationship between AAPG SC ITB, educational
institution, and students. Nevertheless, we will require a great contribution and
support from oversight committee if we successfully convene this event. This proposal
is made as a manual for this occasion in the Delta Mahakam Field Trip 2016 and as to
be considered for every side and the sincerity to help in every way for this event,
thank you.
