The War Against Nudist Camps For Children
Naturist Camps and Naturist Children: America has been stunned lately by the terrible
allegations about child abuse at Penn State University. Scandals involving sexual
molestation of children have rocked many of our most revered institutions, including the Boy
Scouts, the Catholic Church and in our schools. It's clear that child abuse is a social issue,
not limited to any particular organization or institution. Even the naturist inhabitants was
victimized by those who'd exploit children for sexual purposes, although it is very uncommon.
Any individual or group planning naturist activities must be familiar with the current cultural
climate, which will be becoming increasingly intolerant of any actions involving youngsters
who could be misconstrued as being inappropriate or dangerous. Naturists believe that folks
of ages should be able to participate in naked recreation, that rejecting shame when it comes
to the human body is favorable to physical, mental and sexual health. The presence of
children is an essential element of the philosophy, and to remove them from naturist actions
would significantly redefine the modern movement which began in Germany in 1903.
Morley Schloss, board member of the Naturist Action Committee, manages a naturist youth
camp at Sunsport Gardens in Florida, and debunks the belief that children are somehow at
risk in naturist settings. From what I read, kids are safer at naturist resorts than in scout
camps, church groups or malls. Most nudist resorts are gated communities. Members and
The plaza was only installed about 2 years ago so there was no previous chance for anyone
to be here because "here" didn't exist. Nudity in the area was common prior to the plaza
being built, but a couple of folks hanging out for hours was a new thing that we hadn't seen
before after the plaza was installed. are screened for criminal activity. Children have many
people looking for them, adults and other kids. Since naturist children are normally
comfortable with their bodies, they'd not be hesitant to report any tactics to them with which
they're uncomfortable. Hence, children are quite safe from maltreatment in naturist places.

In January of 2010, acting on an anonymous criticism, The Florida State Department of
Children and Families paid a visit to Sunsport Gardens. Mr. Schloss welcomed them in,
showed them pictures of children having fun at the youth camp, and the officials left met that
Sunsport offered a safe, caring environment.
However, overzealous politicians or prosecutors are constantly looking for "hot button" issues
with which to rouse public sentiment in their own favor, such as for example in 2003 when U.
S. Representative Mark Foley (R) Florida read an article in the New York Times about an
AANR nudist youth camp at Lake Como Nudist Resort in Land OLakes. Foley was running
for Senator at the time and felt he wanted a family values issue to take attention away from
rumors swirling about that he was homosexual, so he grabbed the chance to began a
campaign against the youth camps, accusing them of "using nudity among minor kids to
make money."
The narrative about the youth camps went national, with Foley appearing on Fox News, and
Time Magazine running an article asking the question "are they any place for kids?" The
firestorm had started.
In Florida, naturists took actions, meeting right with Congressman Foley, and gradually the
problem faded away, certainly due in part to the political strength of the naturist population in
Pasco County. Governor Jeb Bush's office released a statement saying The rights of parents
to impart their values in their children and raise their children as they see fit are holy."

At about the same time, since the Times article mentioned that a young naturist camp was
also being held in Arizona and future camps were being planned in both Texas and Virginia,
anti-camp bills were quickly introduced in those state.
There were also ultimately no political impacts in Arizona, but in February of Many people
can insist since any reasonable or clever individual should know how-to act that principles for
appropriate actions are not essential. About the other-hand, folks that are unfamiliarized are
consistently contacted by naturist companies. We should depart without doubt as to what
kind-of people are promoters of apparel- elective entertainment! Indeed, naturists are
individuals that are wonderful and we make an effort to preserve it like that! of Delegates
voted 98-1 to require parental supervision at camps for young naturists, later approved by the
Senate 40-0. The single vote was against the act because the bill did not go far enough. In
2005 a bill was introduced to modify the language in the nudist camp laws, which would have
effectively banned kids from all nudist and naturist places, but that legislation was tabled for
future consideration.
