Fire & Smoke Dampers

Series IBD Fire Dampers

Holyoake Curtain-type fire dampers are designed to maintain the
integrity of the fire resistance of a wall, or floor, in which a hole has
been formed to permit the passage of air, ducted or otherwise, to
enable an air distribution system to function. The arrangement of
interlocking blades mounted in a guide channel frame, minimizes
space requirements and facilitates ease of installation in ductwork.
Fire Rating:
All Holyoake Series IBD units carry up to a 4 HOUR rating to
AS 1530.4 as determined by the following testing Authority.
For the purposes of the Australian and New Zealand
Building Code they have an FRL/FRR of / 240 / .

This device can be activated by smoke detectors of
compatible design, (Supply and fit by others).
By definition, a fire damper provides an effective
barrier to the passage of fire and products of
combustion, but when its operation is initiated by the
detection of smoke, or other products of combustion
it may then be termed smoke damper.
The difference between a fire damper and a smoke
damper is not a physical one, but is in the method of
initiating the operation. (AS 1682.1-1990).
Series IBD fire dampers must be installed in sleeves
(refer to Pages 313H - 317H). These sleeve
assemblies are available, please consult the sales
office.

Where opening is larger than maximum single section size, an assembly
of equal size single section dampers is used. Style B assemblies where
more than one unit high, would consist of B type units in the top row
only and A type elsewhere. Multiple assemblies are shipped in sections
for field assembly. Adequate fire rated bracing must be provided by the
installer to prevent collapse of multiple unit assemblies when closed,
even under relatively low pressure differential conditions.

Fire Dampers Series IBD

Fire Damper Installation
The following installation method and diagrams (shown on the next
page) are presented as the method by which
Holyoake fire dampers must be installed.

(VI) When installed and closed, the blade and pivots must be fully
contained within the penetrated element and within the casing
(AS 1682.2 - 1990).

It draws upon SMACNA fire, smoke and radiation damper installation

guide for HVAC systems, third edition, 1986, and is intended to meet
the requirements of Australian Standard 1682, Part 2, 1990.

(VII) Fire dampers may not be used as control dampers.

i.e. They must be installed fully open.

The casing shall completely penetrate the fire barrier and be retained:

(VIII) All Holyoake IBD type fire dampers must be sleeve mounted.5,6,7
See details on following pages.

(a) on both sides by means of mounting flanges in such a manner that

it can expand in a fire without distorting the blades in a closed
position; or

(IX) Series IBD vertical (wall) mounted fire dampers must not be
installed either with blades vertical (on end), with the blade stack
below the opening, or horizontally.

(I)

(b) on the accessible side by means of one mounting flange only,

which can be fixed to the fire damper and to the fire barrier through
oversized holes and penny washers. Fixings should be finger tight
(to allow movement for thermal expansion), but locked, i.e. with
double nut (lock nut).
Mounting flanges 5, 6, 7 shall be butted against the face of the fire
barrier and fixed to the fire damper casing. The width of the angle
section of the flange shall be not less than twice the clearance
between the fire damper body and the penetration.
(II) The fire damper shall be installed so that the airflow2 does not
impede its closure, and air velocities3 do not exceed the dampers
limit (10 m/s).
(III) The method of attachment of ductwork to the fire damper must
be such that any deformation, or collapse of the ductwork in a
fire, does not dislodge the fire damper, or affect its performance.
This is best achieved by the use of breakaway joints which will
allow damaged ductwork to fall away. e.g. Slip Joints, Proprietary
Duct Flange Systems, etc.
(IV) Clearance between sleeve and penetration should be
packed with compressible, non-combustable4 materials and
generally be such that the hole size may be no less than
overall sleeve size + 1% + 10 mm, both width and height.
However, in no case should total clearance be less than the tested
prototype (12 x 2 = 24), or exceed 50% of the flange face width.
(V) Access doors, or removable pressed panels, must be provided
for duct entry, to test and reset release mechanisms and for
inspection.

Vertical in wall

Vertical in wall

This is the correct position

Vertical in wall

(X) Ensure damper is square and free from racking, that there are
no obstructions in the centre track, and that it is installed in
accordance with the this way up arrow on every damper, both
vertical and horizontal.
(XI) For Special Applications and Installation Methods, please contact
your local Holyoake Branch.

Notes
1 AS 1682.1 - 1990 requires the casing to be no less than 1.6 mm in thickness.
Australian Standards Association allow that the combination of casing and
sleeve in this case satisfies this requirement. In keeping with SMACNA
recommendations, minimum sleeve thickness is 0.45mm which augments
the roll-formed section to provide a total of 1.6 mm for the smallest duct
size, and greater for larger sizes. Holyoake sleeves are a minimum thickness
of 0.55 mm.
2 Air flow may be from either direction for Holyoake Series IBD.
3 While damper size influences acceptable velocities (i.e. the larger the
damper the lower the velocity), Holyoake Industries suggests a maximum of
10 m/s on vertical gravity dampers. If velocities are expected to exceed this,
it is suggested that spring closure (type H) dampers be specified, even for
vertical mounting. Pressure differential across the closed damper should
not exceed 750 Pa.

4 Material capable of resisting high temperatures, fusing at not less than

1000C, such as high temperature mineral wool, may be accepted for this
purpose. Prototypes were tested with a High Temperature Loose Wool.
5 SMACNA requires the damper and retaining flanges to be secured to the
sleeve, with 6 mm bolts and nuts, 12 mm welds, 4.7 mm steel rivets, or
No. 10 steel screws. (Optional fixing screws can be provided).
6 Retaining flanges must be of minimum thickness 2.5 mm for face area
> 2 m2, or 2.0 mm for face area < 2 m2 (AS 1682.1 - 1990).
They are mandatory on all four sides, but need not be welded to form a frame.
7 Materials for sleeves and retaining flanges must comply with
AS 1682.1 - 1990, which allows galvanised steel with a coating class not
less than Z275.

Safe Test - Test Latch Model IBD-TL

IBD-TL

Safe and Simple Testing Method.

Test and Reset in minutes.
AS 1851 - 2012 (Section 13) requires that you annually test Fire
Dampers.
To ensure the Life and Property saving function for which they are
designed, all fire dampers should be drop tested after installation.
All IBD dampers are fitted with Safe Test Test Latch links.

Each Holyoake Series IBD Fire Damper is mechanically tested

before it is allowed to leave the factory. In the event of damage
occurring during transit, on site, or during installation, rendering any
fire damper ineffective, failure to function will reveal any warping,
track obstruction, or spring failure that may have occurred. This will
require rectification, cleaning and removal of the obstacle, prior to
retesting and handover.
The Holyoake Safe Test IBD-TL Test Latch, is a latching device with
a specially made fusible link, which, when the latch is released,
swings clear and allows the curtain to close as if the link had parted
under the influence of flame. After testing, the curtain can be
re-stacked and the same link clipped back into the latch, where it is
again ready to be released in the event of a fire.

(All dimensions include 6 mm clearance total between outside of damper frame and inside of duct).

For pressure drop through an open IBD-A-V, or IBD-A-H fire damper use the
following procedure:
1. Find the Area Factor from the above table enter duct height and width.
2. Determine Conversion Velocity (CV) by multiplying Area Factor by flow in
m3/s (CV = Area Factor x m3/s).
3. Enter pressure drop chart with Area Factor and establish intersection
with Conversion Velocity (CV) line just determined. Read pressure drop
on left hand side of the chart.

Note: Interpolations while not precise, are adequate for most calculations.
EXAMPLE:
Find the pressure drop across a 900 wide x 1504 high model IBD-A-V fire
damper, passing 11 m3/s.
1. From the table using interpolation, the Area Factor is 0.9.
2. CV = 11 x 0.9 = 10.
3. From pressure drop chart, pressure drop is 9 Pa.

Note: Add 6 mm to Nominal W (Width) and Nominal H (Height) for Internal Duct Size.

Use the table and chart to determine the pressure drop through
HFS R 146 Fire / Smoke Dampers.

EXAMPLE:
Find the pressure drop across a 350 wide x 814 high model HFS-R-146
Fire/Smoke Damper handling 1.3 m3/s.

1. Determine area factor for damper by entering the area factor table with
duct width and height.

1. From the table the area factor is 5.25.

2. Find conversion velocity (CV) by multiplying area factor for selected size
damper by flow rate in m3/s. CV = Area Factor x m3/s.

2. CV = 1.3 x 5.25 = 6.825.

3. From pressure drop chart, Pressure Drop is 12Pa.
(Note: Interpolations while not precise, are adequate for most calculations).

3. Enter pressure drop chart with area factor and proceed up to the
appropriate conversion velocity (CV) line.
Read the pressure drop (Pa) on the left hand side of the chart.

Notes
1. Static Pressure and Conversion Velocities are correct for 1.2 kg/m3 air density.
2. Pressure drop data is for dampers tested with ductwork on both the up and downstream sides. These values need to be suitably increased where dampers
are mounted with ductwork on one side only, or when mounted onto plenum walls. (Refer to SMACNA, or ASHRAE System Design Guides).
3. Data is for the specific sizes listed in the Area Factor table. For other sizes use the next size down and make a proportional adjustment based on the
approximate increase in free area.
