SECTION 099100-1 INTUMESCENT FIREPROOF COATING
A.
Provide intumescent fireproof coat on steel structural members, minimum 2.5 hrs for columns
and girders, 1 hrs for beams
B.
Application

Surface Preparation: Refer to Section 051200 Structural Steel Framing for shop
preparation of steel substrates in accordance with SSPC-SP3.
a.
Ensure that exposed substrate is clean, dry and free from any contamination such
as grease, oil, or salt formation.
b.
All steel surfaces to be free of pinholes, voids, gaps and irregularities, and inside
and outside corners are to be straight and even. Remove welding spatter, flux, and
all loose mill scale, loose paint, and other loose matters by power wire brushing,
power sanding, power grinding, power tool chipping and power tool descaling.
c.
Remove dust and dirt with cloth or tool. Repair areas where finishes have peeled
off.
d.
Remove water and oil with solvents that do not to cause a reduction of adhesion.
e.
Follow the coating manufacturers surface preparation requirements.
f.
Repair any defects or damage before application of coating.
2.
Provide undercoat at Site.
3.
Provide main coat at Site.
4.
Provide topcoat at Site.
5.
Site Application
a.
Keep surface dry before application.
b.
Method of application and procedure shall comply with the manufacturers
recommendations
c.
Maintain environmental monitoring during application. The coating is sensitive to
moisture and shall be protected against rain and consequent water ponding during
application in order to avoid blistering.
d.
During application, follow with the manufacturers requirements and if the
conditions deteriorate or seem likely to do so, the application shall be interrupted.
Provide sufficient protection.
e.
Secure drying time and proper curing conditions in accordance with the
manufacturers instructions.
f.
Protect coated products from any other damage.

D.
Quality Control
1.
The Contractor shall submit MSDS sheets or official reports of proposed products to
verify that the paint does not produce any toxic substances harmful to the human bodies
and environment including under the conditions of hot and humid weather, certified by
the manufacturers or by a Qualified Testing and Inspection Agency.
2.
Secure dry film thickness in order to satisfy required fire rating. Follow the
manufacturers instructions.
3.
Particular care shall be paid during handling, transportation, and storage. If the coating
surface is damaged, follow with the manufacturers instructions for repair.
4.
Application of coating shall comply with the manufacturers instructions. Particularly
application shall be made carefully at inside and outside corners to secure the required
thickness.
