BALKAN

ROWING
CHAMPIONSHIP
KASTORIA
10-11 SEPTEMBER
2016

Greetings from the President of

EKOFNS
Dear Friends,
This year, the Balkan Rowing
Championship takes place in the
beautiful city of Kastoria. Since
1975, each year the rowing
championship is organised in a
dierent country, giving young men and women of
the Balkans the chance to participate in a healthy
competition. It is also an opportunity to build better
relations between our countries. The municipality of
Kastoria, the Region of Western Macedonia and
other local agents joined forces with the Greek
Rowing Federation and the Nautical Club of Kastoria
in order to create a successful championship event
and provide the athletes with the best possible
hospitality. There has been given extra care and
consideration so that the athletes will compete

under equal and fair conditions. The athletes are top

ranked athletes competing at a high prole
championship, providing an excellent spectacle for
the audience.
This championship is of high importance as it
involves the Juniors Men & Women and Cadets
categories. These young athletes are given the
opportunity to gain experience, to redene their goal
and compete on an international level. Some of
these athletes will climb the podiums at European
and International Championships. The beautiful city
of Kastoria has now opened its arms to the young
athletes of the Balkans and their escorts. We hope
you have a wonderful stay here and we wish all of
you best of luck at the 2016 Balkan Championship.

Greetings from the Mayor of

also on international level. Kastorian athletes have

meeting, especially the Nautical Club of Kastoria

athletic, cultural and moral values that contribute in

shaping peoples' personalities.

KASTORIA
The prefecture of Kastoria is located in the western
part of Western Macedonia. It borders the
prefectures of Florina, Grevena, Kozani and
Ioannina and also Albania to the west. There are
ights from Athens to Kastoria's international
airport Aristotle, which is situated in Argos
Orestiko. There is easy road access to the region via
the Egnatia motorway.
The city of Kastoria unfolds amphitheatrically 620
metres above sea level. It is built on a peninsula that
penetrates Orestiada Lake, in the shade of the
impressive mass of Grammos and Vitsi mountains.
Throughout history, it has uniquely preserved its
Greek character and traditions, even when times
were hard. Kastoria's architecture has been
inuenced by Byzantine and post Byzantine era
architectural trends. Historically, Kastoria has
always been a signicant centre of activity being
one of the most important economic and cultural
centres throughout Western Macedonia. Its
strategic location played vital role for its cultural
and economic development.
There is evidence that Kastoria has been inhabited
since the Neolithic era. The Roman historian, Titus

Livius mentions that in the 5th century BC, a city

called Kilitron was lying at the current location of
Kastoria, while in the 6th century BC, Procopius
from Caesarea mentions that there is a lake in
Macedonia called Kastoria.
In 396 AD, when the Roman Empire was divided,
Kastoria, belonging to the eastern unit, became
part of the Byzantine Empire. Due to its signicant
strategic location, the city was conquered by many
invaders.
During the Ottoman era, the region became an
important commercial and cultural centre in the
Balkans.
Fur manufacturing is inextricably linked with the
city of Kastoria. Throughout time, the Kastorian fur
manufacturers have been creating real masterpieces, still applying the same traditional
techniques dating back to the Byzantine era. While
the manufacturers use top quality fur and leather
materials, buyers can purchase their products in
aordable prices. Each year in Kastoria, there is an
International Fur Fair, attracting visitors from all
over the world.
