pinhole photography
the camera obscura
what are the only things you need in a pinhole camera?
aperture
(hole)
(light-tight)
body
shutter
(and something light-sensitive if you want to make a permanent image)
how does it work?
sun
photo paper
how does a pinhole control exposure?
aperture size
exposure time
(how long the shutter is open)
focal length
(distance from
aperture to photo
paper)
Focal Length
affects how zoomed in the image is.
the shorter the distance from the aperture to the photo paper, the
more of the image you will see.
the longer the distance, the more zoomed in your image will be.
the focal length isnt just determined by the length of your box but
also how far away from the subject you stand.
The assignment
Problem: Experiment with different exposure times informed by the
amount of light and focal distance of your camera to create a
successful pinhole negative.
DOCUMENT EVERYTHING! In your sketchbook/binder, tape every
single pinhole exposure you make and use the log to record
exposure time (seconds), quality of light, and a description of what
you can do to improve your exposure the next time.

RESULTS
You will take a total of 8 images.
The first 7 will be for you to
acclimate to using your pinhole
camera. Complete the log to
record your findings.
On the final photgraph, take what
youve learned to compose a
final image which will be turned
into a positive.
Grading: the pinhole camera
40 points total
10 Points - Fuction
Your pinhole camera is light-tight, all visible light leaks have been
sealed.
Your camera has a working aperture, shutter, and paper loading
mechanism (flat wall to place your photographic paper upon). It
has been carefully painted black inside of the body.

40 points total
10 Points - Design
Your camera can close to seal the interior space from light without
requiring lots of tape.
The material or object you are making your camera from has been
clearly considered to enable the camera to function easily.

40 points total
20 Points - Craft
You have demonstrated carefully and efficient use of scissors, knives,
tape (black and masking), spray paint, and other building materials
to make your pinhole camera.
Your pinhole camera has been built to be strong, durable, and sturdy.
You have addressed any structural weaknesses as best as possible.
Your camera demonstrates care and craft in its construction. You
have invested time in the cameras overall appearance.
How to make a pinhole
Step One: Pick a container that can be turned light-tight (a coffee can,
shoebox with detachable lid, etc.)
Step Two: Spray paint the inside of your container with FLAT BLACK.
Step Three: Tape all sides to create a seal.
Step Four: Determine where your aperture/shutter will be. Cut out a
1/2 inch hole in the center of this side.
Step Five: Get an aperture (piece of aluminum with a hole) and
carefully tape it in place over the hole you cut out.
Step Six: Create a tab out of tape to act as your shutter.
Step Seven: Start taking pictures!
