COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Course Overview: Although it might seem that a survey class in the worlds religions should just cover
the most significant facts about religions and about their major beliefs, in this class we will take an
explicit approach highlighting religious beliefs, in order to reduce the distorting effects of self-ignorance
and egoism and decrease the potential for intercultural violence.

This course examines and compares the worlds major


religious traditions, such as Hinduism, Buddhism,
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It emphasizes reading
and interpreting the sacred texts, as well as exploring the
implications of each religion for how life is lived.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Explain the common ground among major world religions,
especially between religions that at first may seem very different.
Demonstrate critical thinking in approaching the study of religion.
Discuss the ethical claims of each religion.
Discuss 21st century developments in world and indigenous
religions.
Characteristics of major religions
How are they similar and different
How has belief systems spread over large areas

COURSE ACTIVITIES:

Writing assignments: students will analyze current issues in the field


using current articles from the popular press as well as library research
including electronic resources databases.
Speaking assignments: students will present research individually or in
groups using current technology to support the presentation (e.g.,
PowerPoint presentation); students will participate in discussions and
debates related to the topics in the lessons. Discussions may also focus
on cross-cultural and legal-ethical dilemmas as they relate to the course
content.
Simulation activities: Trends and issues will analyzed for their ethical
as well as social or legal significance. Students might role-play common
situations for classmates to analyze. Current news articles may be used
to generate discussion.
Lectures: This format will include question and answer sessions to
provide interactivity between students and instructor.
Speakers: Representatives from various related fields may be invited to
speak.
