Year 1 Newsletter
September 2016
Welcome to Year 1! I hope that you had a fantastic Summer and that you are ready for
the new school year. Im looking forward to working in partnership with you to enable all of
the Year 1 children to reach their full potential. In Year 1, Miss Rigby and Miss Wilkinson
will help us with our learning. Mrs Holt will also be working with us in Year 1.
Your childs books will be changed weekly by Mrs Nicholson or Miss Wilkinson: this will
work on an A/B cycle whereby Mrs Nicholson and Miss Wilkinson will read with each child
every two weeks. Please make sure that your child brings his/her Book Bag to school every
day. It is vital that you also read with your child for 5-10 minutes every day.
Literacy
In Literacy, we will be reading and writing
stories about character strengths (kindness,
teamwork and love), instructions (how to bake
bread), diaries (linked to our topic) and
information texts.
Ways to help
Read with your child every night and sign
their Reading Record share the reading
too hear them read but give them
opportunities to hear you read.
Register your child at the local library and
visit regularly encourage them to take out
books that interest them.
Maths
In Maths, we will be learning about the number system and the
place value of numbers to 20 and beyond. We will be learning how
to measure using non-standard units (e.g. cubes), building up to
measuring using a ruler, scales and a measuring jug. For addition
and subtraction, we will be learning to add and subtract numbers
within 20, building up to solving one-step problems practically.
Ways to help
Practise counting skills as often as you can I will be sending home a 100 square by
the end of this week. Please use it to help your child practise counting forwards and
backwards from different numbers.
Make use of opportunities for your child to tell the time (e.g. if your child has
breakfast at 8 oclock, practice telling the time on your clock while they are having
breakfast).
Play Maths games on www.ictgames.co.uk
Science
In Science we will be learning about Animals including humans. The
children will learn the names of different body parts and which parts
are related to which sense. For our animals learning, the children will
be learning about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
