Cause
AntivirussoftwaredeletedorquarantinedthebinfilefromtheDeduplicationstorage,hereinthis
example"F:\DeDupFolder\data/XXXX.bin",where'XXXX.bin'isthenameofthemissingbinfile.
Solution
Introduction:
WhenrunningantivirussoftwareonaBackupExecServerwhereaDeduplicationStorageFolderis
installed,binarydatafilesrequiredforboththefunctioningoftheBackupExecDeduplicationEngine,as
wellastheintegrityoftheDeduplicationStorageFolderitselfmaybedeleted.Thismayresultinthe
BackupExecDeduplicationEnginestoppingandfailingtorestart,orpossiblecorruptionofbackupsin
theDeduplicationStorageFolder.
WhatisAffected:
BackupExecServerswithantivirussoftwareinstalledthathostaDeduplicationStorageFolder.The
DeduplicationStorageFolderfunctionalitywasintroducedinBackupExec2010.
HowtoDetermineifAffected:
IftheDeduplicationFolderwillnotcomeonline,checktoseeiftheBackupExecDeduplicationEngine
canbestarted.Ifitcannot,checkthe<pathtodeduplicationstoragefolder>\log\spoold.logfor
messagessimilartothefollowing:

clientsmaycontainfileswithvirussignatures.Insuchcases,itispossiblethatitwillendupinthe
DeduplicationStorageFolderfileswhereitcouldmatchasignaturetoanyantivirussoftwarerunningon
thatmediaserver.
ItisrecommendedthattheantivirussoftwarebeconfiguredtoexcludetheDeduplication
StorageFolderoratleastbyensuringthatitwon'tautomaticallydeleteorquarantinefilesinthe
DeduplicationStorageFolder.
StepstoFollow:
1)FromtheantivirusprogramchecktheQuarantineforXXXX.binfile,whichismissingin
F:\DeDupFolder\datalocation.
2)ManuallyexportXXXXtothedesktop.(Whichwillappeartohavenoextension'.bin').
3)Addtheextension'.bin'totheexportedfileonthedesktop.
4)CopyXXXX.bintoF:\DeDupFolder\datalocation(i.e.thededuplicationstorage)
5)Startpostgresqlservice(DonotStartBackupExecDeduplicationEngineServiceatthispoint)
6)RunDcscan.exeverifyqXXXX
IfdcscancompleteswithouterrorsthenBackupExecDeduplicationEngineServicecanbestartedand
binfileleftintheDeduplicationStorage\Datafolder
7)IfDcscanreportserrorsinthecontainerthenthebinfileiscorruptedandneedstoberemoved.
PleasecontactBackupExecSupportsinceaInternalSymantecUtilityneedstoberunto
recreatethemissing/corruptbinfileandconfirmtheIntegrityofContentRouterDatabase(crdb).
ThisisanImportantprocedurewhichneedstobecarriedouttoensuresomebackupsetwhich
areaffectedduetothemissing/corruptbinfile(whichcontainsdedupesegments)areidentified.
NOTE:
1)Alwaysmakesurethatyourenvironmentisrunningthelatestversionandpatchlevel.
2)ItisrecommendedthattheantivirussoftwarebeconfiguredtoexcludetheDeduplicationStorage
Folderoratleastbyensuringthatitwon'tautomaticallydeleteorquarantinefilesintheDeduplication
StorageFolder.
3)EnsureIndexingontheDeduplicationFolderisdisabledasitmightInterferewithsomeactivitieson
deduplication.
4)Dcscan.exeislocatedatBEInstallPath.
5)ItisrecommendedtoBackuptheDeduplicationFolderthroughLocalShadowCopyComponents.
