Kosen Judo: History and Techniques

Kosen judo is a style of judo practiced in Japanese universities that emphasizes ground techniques like joint locks and chokes. It developed as smaller students needed ways to defeat larger opponents without relying on throws. It focuses on grappling and stalling techniques to earn points or force submissions. In the early 20th century, kosen judo's effectiveness led to a dominance of ground fighting in mainstream judo competitions. This prompted rule changes by judo's founder Jigoro Kano to refocus the sport on standing techniques while still allowing kosen judo schools to continue their ground-focused approach. Kosen judo remains practiced today at some Japanese universities, especially in an annual tournament among seven former imperial universities.
