Teacher Biographies
Naomi J Barker flute and baroque flute
I am a lecturer in music with the Open University with research interests in early
music. Although I specialise in baroque flute with its repertory and performance
practice, I have had extensive experience across the education sector teaching
the flute to all ages and levels, with a high level of success in ABRSM exams from
Grade 1 through to diploma level. I encourage students to think through
interpretative issues for themselves by reading and listening critically. Although I
live in Gateshead, I am very close to bus stops for a direct service to Durham. My
availability is somewhat flexible, but I prefer late afternoon/ evening lessons.
Janet Evans G.G.S.M L.R.A.M P.G.C.E
Janet Evans studied at Guildhall School of Music and has been
performing and teaching the piano for forty years, also teaching
the flute and clarinet. She particularly enjoys music of the
Classical and Romantic periods and as well as giving solo
recitals (her L.R.A.M is in performance) she has also been
soloist in several concerti and has performed in piano duet
partnerships and ensembles with woodwind and string
instruments. Janet has taught people of all ages from beginners
to post-Diploma level as well as coaching chamber ensembles,
has accompanied many instrumentalists and singers in
performance and for the past three years has been examining
for Trinity College London.
Whilst a strong advocate of slow, meticulous practice and
technical exercises to build up stamina, Janet firmly believes
that many technical problems are overcome by a change of
approach to the thinking through of a particular passage and
careful planning to adopt the correct physical position and use
the correct muscles, rather than forcing the fingers into
submission.
Janet has worked for the Department of Music for three years
and she emphasises preparing students for all aspects of
performance in terms of projection, balance between musical
lines and discrimination of tone and texture.
Janet lives and teaches at Trevelyan College, where her
husband is Principal. She is very much involved in College life,
being a student mentor, Treasurer of the Fine Arts Committee
and Membership Secretary for the Senior Common Room.
Jane Ford-Farrand
Jane is a singing teacher, choral director, holistic voice therapist and
thanatologist. She has a private practice as well as her University commitments.
Jane has a particular interest in early music, both for the soloist and the choirs
under her direction. The highly acclaimed all female young voice ensemble,
concordia, for example has given notable performances of the music of
Hildegard of Bingen as well as an exciting concert in the Bowes Museum with
lutenist Jacob Heringman. Jane is especially interested in the acoustic quality
of the human voice which has led to her research in voice therapy. She now also
specialises in chanting sanskrit mantra and overtone singing.
Stuart Gray
Stuart Gray hails from the North East being born in Gateshead he now lives in Sunderland.
Whilst studying at Newcastle College Stuart took Trombone lessons with Chris Houlding (Principal
Trombone, Opera North) at the Royal Northern College of Music.
He is currently Director of Instrumental Music at Egglescliffe School in Stockton as well as pursuing a
succesful career as a freelance musician working with Orchestras such as Royal Northern Sinfonia,
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Opera North.
He specialises in Tenor and Alto Trombone but can also teach Euphonium. Lessons can take place in
Durham or be arranged at other suitable venues accross the region.
Lisa Hardy
I teach at home in Langley Moor, Durham, on a Bluthner grand piano. I enjoy a wide
range of repertoire from the Baroque period onwards, including Bach, Beethoven,
Chopin, Debussy and early twentieth century British composers.
During the week I teach class music lessons at Durham High School for Girls and teach piano and
flute at both Durham High School for Girls and Sunderland High School.
My PhD thesis, "The British Piano Sonata, 1870-1945" was revised for publication by
Boydell and Brewer in 2001 and a paperback edition was published in 2012.
I have extensive experience as an accompanist. This includes singing and instrumental exams up to
diploma level, recitals and choral societies, as well as being a rehearsal accompanist for the annual
musical which Durham High School puts on at the Gala Theatre, Durham.
Susan Innes
Susan Innes studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston with
Robert Brink, who founded the Boston Classical Orchestra. After receiving a
B.Mus she returned to London, studying for an LRAM with Nona Liddell. She has
worked as a teacher and freelance musician for many years in Durham.

Susan Innes
Elizabeth
Elizabeth studied music at Durham University and was a student at Trevelyan
College. She then had a year's postgraduate study at the RNCM where she
studied with Derrick Wyndham. Her life-long teacher has been Dame Fanny
Waterman with whom she still has lessons. She has taken part in numerous
master-classes, including with Vlado Perlemuter, and has performed throughout
the UK. Alongside a strong background in the Classical/Romantic genres,
Elizabeth has an interest in contemporary music and coaching ensembles
across a whole range of styles.
Elizabeth lives and works in Scotland and also teaches at the University of
Sheffield and performs with the Mirren Ensemble. Her lessons for Durham
University students take place in the Music Department.
