The Great Gatsby

Essay

Compose a 3-5 page paper that addresses one of the following prompts:
! Despite the title of the novel, there are conflicting views of whether or not
the figure of Jay Gatsby is truly Great. What would you define as Great,
and is this an appropriate way to describe Gatsby? Ultimately, is he
deserving of the title?

! The societies of East Egg and West Egg are drastically different, yet they are
both composed of the members from upper crust society. Explain how
Fitzgerald uses characters from each society to communicate his criticism of
the wealthy. Is one society more admirable than the other, or does
Fitzgerald have the same opinion about both?

! The Roaring Twenties and ideals of the flapper are often associated with the
freedom and independence of the new woman. Examine the portrayals of
women in the novel. Do they perpetuate the female values of the 1920s or do
they play a paradoxical role?

! Many critics have argued that The Great Gatsby is a book about the
disintegration and/or loss of the American Dream. Examine how the novel
depicts the concept of the American Dream. Do you agree or disagree with
these critics?

! The past serves as a central theme in the novel. Gatsby is a character that is
largely propelled by his personal past, while Daisy, Tom, and Jordan appear
more to be creatures of the present. Examine the role of the past in the
novel. How does it motivate and impact the characters?
