Full mark: 100, exam duration: 120 minutes including paper peruse
Q1. Power flow
(1) Fig Q1 (1) shows a power system with network admittances
(i) Formulate the nodal current injection equation for buses (nodes) 1, 2, and 3 respectively. (6 marks)

a.
Using KCL (nodal voltage method) to write out nodal current balance equations
I1=(V1-V3)Y13+V1(Y12/2+Y13/2)-(V2-V1)Y12
I2=(V2-V1)Y12+V2(Y12/2+Y23/2)-(V3-V2)Y23
I3=(V3-V2)Y23+V3(Y13/2+Y23/2)-(V1-V3)Y13

Y12 =(- y12), Y13=(-y13 ) = ---mutual admittance

(2) A 2 bus power system is shown in Fig Q1 (2). Bus 1 is the slack bus. A generator is connected at bus 2
through a transmission line with z = 0.02 + j0.06 p.u. and the line charging of 5 Mvar on each end (100 MVA
base). Also, there is a 25 Mvar capacitor at bus 2. If the slack bus voltage is 1.0 p.u., and V2 = 1.05 p.u., use
the Gaussian method to calculate V2? (you may like to start the calculation with assuming V2 = 1.050o p.u.)

Q2. An interconnected generator-reactor system is shown in the Figure Q2. The MVA ratings of each
equipment are given in the figure, and the MVA bases for the given percent reactance are the rating of the
individual equipment.
a) If a 3-phase short circuit fault occurs at point F. Determine the fault current and the fault kVA if the
busbar line to line voltage is 11 kV (use 100 MVA as the baseMVA in your calculation)
(12 marks)
b) If generator G1 is disconnected from the system, and is operating with phase A open and the other two
phases short circuited to the ground. The symmetric components of its phase A current are
I a(1) = 500 90 o A, I a( 2 ) = 20090 o A, I a( 0 ) = 30090 o A . Find the B and C phase current, and the current
flow into the ground.

Q3 A single line diagram of the power system is shown in Figure Q3, where negative- and zero- sequence
reactances are also given. The neutrals of the generator and -Y transformers are solidly grounded. The motor
neutral is grounded through a reactance Xn= 0.05 pu on the motor base. (i) Draw the per unit zero-, positiveand negative sequence networks on a 100MVA, 13.8 kV base in the zone of the generator
(ii)Reduce the sequence networks to their Thevenin equivalents as viewed from the Bus 2. Prefault voltage is
VF= 1.050 pu. Prefault load current and -Y transformer phase shift are neglected.

Q3. Protection and relay

(1) Briefly explain the different types of over-current relay and draw out their current-time operation
characteristics;
(10 marks)
(2) For a MHO relay having a torque equation as below, k3/k2= 5 and =40o. Draw out the operating
characteristic of the relay. If the relay has a measured V/I= 535o, will it send out activation signal to
the connected circuit breaker?

(2)

=30o, k3/k2= 5. When V/I= 535o, K3/K2 *cos(35-40)=5*cos(-5o)= 4.98

|V/I|=5 > 4.98 therefore the relay will not trigger.
