Arcadia 2
2.
BYRON (V.O.)
The mad king returned to Arcadia
bearing the worlds riches...
EXT. MT. LYCAON - ANCIENT GREECE - DAY
A great limestone mountain - rising high above the kingdom
walls - envelopes Lycaons city in choking shadow.
EXT. CAVE ENTRANCE - MT. LYCAON - ANCIENT GREECE - CONTINUOUS
Lycaon oversees as his Sons haul in TREASURE CRATES.
BYRON (V.O.)
Which Lycaon buried deep in the
mountain that still bears his name.
Lycaon HALTS the last crate-carrying Son in front of DAEDALUS, 40, bearded, hunchbacked, hands calloused and
scarred from a lifetime of working with fire and bronze.
BYRON (V.O.)
Lycaon hired Daedalus, Greeces
greatest engineer, to build a vault
to protect his massive hoard.
Daedalus opens the crate, and basks in the treasures GLOW.
INT. DAEDALUS WORKSHOP - ANCIENT GREECE - NIGHT
A curious workshop of imaginative INSTRUMENTS and TOOLS.
BYRON (V.O.)
The vault was impenetrable, boobytrapped, and locked by a key unlike
any other...
At his workbench, Daedalus carefully adjusts the jewelers
loupe of his multi-lensed blacksmith goggles to examine THE CHALICE, a stunningly complex design: stained glass cells
held within a MAZE pattern of intersecting BRONZE lines.
Daedalus winds the miniature GEARS - the bronze lines CLICK
and CHANGE rapidly in the maze, but never damage the glass.
3.
EXT. FEASTING HALL - LYCAONS PALACE - ANCIENT GREECE - NIGHT
An older Lycaon sits with his Sons at a table, while a slave
places a BOWL OF STEW before ZEUS, seated at the far end.
BYRON (V.O)
As Lycaons empire grew, so did his
thirst for power, til he sought
even to challenge the gods. To
prove his might by blasphemy,
Lycaon killed his fiftieth son,
Nyktimus, whod shown weakness
through kindness, and served the
remains in a stew to Zeus himself.
Lycaon grins, as Zeus looks into the stew to see the GHOST of
young NYKTIMUS CRYING OUT SILENTLY in the steam. Zeus KNOWS.
A furious Zeus gathers ENERGY at his fingertips, LEVITATES
over the table and CALLS LIGHTNING FROM THE SKY!
BYRON (V.O) (CONTD)
For such a sin, Zeus transformed
Lycaon and his Sons into
abominations, approximate to their
cruelty as men...
As the godly light penetrates the eyes of Lycaon and Sons,
the excruciatingly painful TRANSFORMATION begins...
Coarse hair covers them. Noses lengthen into snouts, their
mouths fill with jagged teeth. CLAWS rip through fingers...
Lycaon and Sons - NOW IN FULL WEREWOLF FORM - bound off into
the nearby woods, fleeing from any further wrath.
BYRON (V.O) (CONTD)
Zeus turned them into wolf men, the
first from all myths.
Lycaon looks back one last time at his kingdom, and HOWLS...
BYRON (V.O.)
But, the passage of time has buried
the line between history and lore.
FADE OUT.
EXT. DIG SITE - RURAL GREECE - MORNING
A DOZEN GREEK STUDENTS, dressed in 19th century scholarly
robes, excavate bits of antique pottery and arrowheads from
the ground with a variety of rudimentary tools.
4.
SUPER: Arachthos River, Greece, 1822. The second year of
Greeces War for Independence from the Ottoman Empire.
INT. TENT - DIG SITE - CONTINUOUS
ALEX, 40s, a Greek intellectual driven by imagination over
awards, works on a set of MECHANICAL WINGS over a messy desk.
Behind him, FENCING against a wooden pole - LORD BYRON, 34,
the English Romantic poet - brilliant, fashionable, troubled.
The 19th century equivalent of a modern day rock star.
Byrons left hand steadies an overflowing wine goblet as his
right hand expertly parries, jabs, and STICKS the wooden pole
with his pe - a long fencing sword.
BYRON
Another point for Cambridge!
(to pole)
A little slow on the riposte. Work
on it, for next time.
ALEX (O.S.)
Almost done, Byron!
Byron TOASTS the pole, then turns to Alex amidst his clutter.
BYRON
Does your Chancellor know you keep
such a messy desk?
ALEX
Order is the enemy of invention.
Alex straps the wings on his back like a pack, then BUCKLES
the harness across his chest.
ALEX (CONTD)
Imagine, you get a good running
start on a cliff, leap off Alex hits the TRIGGER on his harness - the wings SNAP OUT
into place, and spread nearly as wide as the tent.
ALEX (CONTD)
- then fly like Icarus.
BYRON
Icarus fell, Alex.
ALEX
Bad example. But, imagine your fame
- the first man to fly!
5.
BYRON
I notice you never test your own
inventions. Tenure suits you.
Alex proudly nods as he retracts the wings to slip them off.
BYRON (CONTD)
If youre done playing with toys...
(wine burp)
...you might notice what your
students dragged up this morning...
(theatrically)
In 323 BC, Alexander the Great led
his cavalry through Byron points with his pe OUTSIDE - at MOUNTAINS.
BYRON (CONTD)
- those mountains into Thessaly,
and flanked his enemies before
dawn. And then, Alexander sat He then points his pe at an recently excavated CHAMBER POT.
BYRON (CONTD)
- on that chamber pot, and had his
morning shite. Its priceless!
ALEX
Youve made up better stories.
BYRON
Im out of lies to sell this
rubbish. Cant fund a revolution on
broken spears and bedpans.
ALEX
All that matters is the Chalice.
Twenty years of research into the
Daedalus Cult, comes to this dig.
BYRON
Ive always admired that you never
know when to quit. But, your
students patience for the story of
King Lycaons vault wears thin.
ALEX
Its here! When we find it, we can
fund ten wars against the Ottomans.
BYRON
Yes, enough treasure to match them
cannon for cannon, ship for ship.
6.
BYRON (CONT'D)
(beat)
But, we dont have the Chalice.
TAKIS, 20, Alexs sycophantic assistant - BURSTS into the
tent, his bird chest heaves to catch his breath.
BYRON (CONTD)
You look bound to pop, Takis.
Byron nods him in the direction of the chamber pot.
BYRON (CONTD)
The loos there. Add your stains to
those of the great Alexander!
Takis ignores Byron, brushes past him to Alex.
TAKIS
Weve found...something, Professor.
Its got a seal, like a wolf!
Byron and Alex exchange a glance - could it be?
DIG SITE - MOMENTS LATER
Takis BULLIES through the students, leading Alex and Byron - to an ancient CHEST, dirt encrusted and fresh from the
earth. Alex kneels, uses a rag to gently wipe mud away from
an EMBOSSED EMBLEM of a SNARLING WOLFS HEAD.
Alex consults a LEATHER JOURNAL, flips past pictures of
ANCIENT INVENTIONS, MAPS, until he finds the CHEST - a MATCH!
Alex looks to Byron, both about to burst with excitement.
Takis notes their nonverbal exchange, simmers with jealously.
TAKIS (CONTD)
(to Alex)
I pulled it from the ground myself.
ALEX
Good work, Takis.
(to all)
Good work, everyone! You are all to
thank for this historic moment.
That gets an eyeroll from Takis, but Alex misses it as he
grabs two crowbars from the dirt. Alex hands the spare to
Byron - not Takis. They wedge their iron claws under the lid POOSH - the lid slides off in a CLOUD OF DUST. Once it
clears, Alex reaches into the FUR LINING, and removes the -
7.
LYCAON CHALICE BOWL! Alex holds it up triumphantly.
ALEX (CONTD)
The Lycaon Chalice bowl - worth
every day of the last twenty years.
Do you believe now, Byron?
BYRON
I never doubted you for a moment.
Alex laughs, as Takis inches in for a closer look.
TAKIS
(dissatisfied)
But, its only the bowl. Wheres
the stem, the base?
Alex is slow to answer, so Byron answers for him.
BYRON
Far away. A whole new journey!
TAKIS
I wasnt asking you...
Alex shuts Takis up with a sharp look. Then, Alex secrets the
artifact into his satchel, stands and addresses the students.
ALEX
Its a three day trip back to the
University! Be ready in an hour!
(quietly, to Takis)
Well talk when we return.
CHEERS all around, as the students disperse. Byron and Alex
head off together, leaving Takis alone - spurned, yet again.
Takis shuts the chest - the emblems WOLF EYES fix on us...
MATCH CUT TO:
EXT. MOUNTAIN WOODS / PLAINS - RURAL GREECE - EARLY MORNING
A yellow pair of WOLF EYES peer at us through the treeline.
A large grey wolf SNIFFS the air, then licks his chops as its
predatory gaze finds a FLOCK OF SHEEP grazing in the plain just beyond the trees.
The wolf sniffs, listens, but he misses his own hunter -
8.
KYRA, 20, crouched between olive trees, her face framed
between branches, as beautiful as she is focused. Shes still
as death, frozen perfectly, her unblinking eyes tracking The foolish wolf, creeping closer to Kyras sheep.
Very slowly, without taking her eyes off the wolf, Kyra slips
a JAVELIN from her back, and HURLS HER MISSILE...
BULLSEYE! The wolf YIPS in pain, gasps, then collapses.
Kyra emerges from tree cover and approaches her prey. She
steps on the wolfs shoulder, YANKS her javelin free.
Her ears prick up - nearby, a CHORUS OF ANGRY HOWLS...
INT. STONE HUT - RURAL GREECE - MORNING
FELIX, 40, rugged and lean, snoozes in his bedroll.
A NECKLACE of odd shaped silver pieces rests on his bare
chest, brushing against a BITE SHAPED BIRTHMARK on his arm.
HOWLING in the distance - Felix bolts from bed, instantly
grabs his musket and pistol from a gun rack, and darts off...
But, RETURNS, with the look of one who just found rats in the
pantry. He lifts a shorter, second musket from the rack.
FELIX
That girl...
Another HOWL. He rushes out into the early morning light...
EXT. MOUNTAIN WOODS / PLAINS - RURAL GREECE - CONTINUOUS
A WOLF PACK appears, and circles Kyra. She eyes the ALPHA.
KYRA
Your pack has grown since winter.
She brandishes her javelin as a spear, eyes darting from wolf
to wolf. They snarl, lick their chops, ready to feed...
KYRA (CONTD)
Lets cut you back to size.
The wolves CHARGE from all angles. Kyra whirls the tip of her
spear a full rotation, temporarily halting their advance.
A wolf lunges at her flank, but falls to a quick JAB of her
spear. Kyra spins just in time to SLASH another wolf down.
9.
From her blind side, a wolf SPRINGS into the air Kyra DUCKS, and stabs up into its belly, slaying the beast
but BREAKING OFF HER SPEAR TIP...
Her weapon now useless, the remaining wolves seize the
opportunity and rush her, biting at her feet and legs.
Frantic, Kyra kicks them away, but they keep at it, smelling
fresh blood from the tears in her leggings.
BANG! A gunshot. The ALPHA falls - as Felix RIDES in, a smoking musket in his hands. He
quickly changes to his flintlock pistol, aims, and BANG!
Another wolf falls. The rest flee into the woods. Felix trots
to Kyra, as she pushes herself up from the ground - defeated.
FELIX
Were the guardians against the
wolves, Kyra. We must be smarter.
And, better armed.
He flips the short musket to her. She snatches it in the air.
EXT. GRAZING FIELDS - RURAL GREECE - DAY
Seated on stumps, Felix eats bread as Kyra mends her javelin.
FELIX
Milo offered 500 drachmas.
KYRA
For the whole flock? Hes the
biggest wolf in the valley.
FELIX
The Ottomans are coming for Peta,
and if the rebels cant hold em,
all of Epirus falls. Their armies
will eat our stock in a day.
KYRA
I heard in town theres Englishmen,
Americans, Frenchmen, all coming to
fight with the rebels.
FELIX
(nods)
They never miss a revolution. But,
I dont figure theyll be enough to
hold back the Ottomans.
10.
KYRA
We should go North. If we head for
Ioannina, we can FELIX
The enemy already holds Ioannina.
Humbled, Kyra returns to her work - spear to a whetstone.
FELIX (CONTD)
I want you to take Milos money,
and go to Arcadia.
KYRA
(surprised)
Arcadia?
FELIX
Where I grew up. Your mother, too.
Our people will protect you if the
war continues to spread.
A hundred questions are written on Kyras face - but, she
chooses the most important one.
KYRA
Where are you going?
Felix sighs, evades Kyras gaze.
FELIX
To Peta. To fight. The rebels have
called for volunteers.
His answer shocks her. But, that shock quickly turns to rage.
KYRA
No. No! Papa, youll get killed!
You cant ride off to die like...
Felix bolts up in anger.
FELIX
Fathers dont need permission to
fight for their daughters!
Kyra goes quiet, turns away. Felix calms, sits next to her.
FELIX (CONTD)
The only way to protect our way of
life here, is to go out there and
fight. Kyra, please...promise
youll go to Arcadia.
11.
Kyra slowly turns her head towards her father.
KYRA
If youll promise to meet me there,
Ill promise to go.
Felix forces a smile, then nods.
EXT. STONE HUT - RURAL GREECE - DAY
A small MILITIA - lightly armed farmers and shepherds. They
wait atop their mounts, as Felix and Kyra embrace. Goodbye for now, possibly forever.
FELIX
(removes his necklace)
Take this. It goes back in our
family many years...
He guides the jewelry onto her neck.
FELIX (CONTD)
Dont sell or lose it. Its our
only family heirloom.
KYRA
Ill return it to you in Arcadia.
MILITIAMAN
Well miss the battle, Felix.
Felix offers Kyra a small smile, then mounts his horse.
FELIX
I love you, my girl.
KYRA
Love you too, Papa.
Felix grins, then RIDES off with the Militia.
EXT. GRAZING FIELDS - RURAL GREECE - DAY
Kyra HAGGLES with MILO over the purchase of her flock.
KYRA
You said five hundred!
MILO
Wars on. Prices drop with the sun.
12.
KYRA
Ill explain that to my father when
he returns. Im sure hell agree.
Milo studies her serious expression. Fearful, he produces a
smaller coin purse and holds it out.
MILO
Another hundred. As agreed.
Kyra grins, pleased at frightening Milo, and takes the money.
LATER
Kyra emerges from the hut, packed to travel light. The sun
hangs low, near sunset - Milo and the sheep are long gone.
She takes a last look at the only home shes ever known, then
mounts her horse and rides South...
EXT. WOODS - GREEK COUNTRYSIDE - NIGHT
Kyra sits at her small CAMPFIRE, listening to the night.
Her ears prick to an owls SCREECH, and a wolfs distant
HOWL. She takes hold of her javelin and her knife, clutches
one in each hand as she closes her eyes to sleep...
EXT. HILLS - GREEK COUNTRYSIDE - DAY
Byron, Alex and Takis - all on horseback - lead a small
CARAVAN of students and wagons over the grassy hills.
TAKIS
Where to next, Professor?
ALEX
Back to Ioannina first. To the
University. Weve got to get ready.
TAKIS
I mean, where are the other pieces
of the Chalice?
BYRON
(changing the subject)
I remember, at Cambridge, we had a
drinking cup that was...
Byron fades off as their horses crest the hill to see -
13.
THE MASSACRE AT PETA - the town burned, THOUSANDS dead. They
all spur their horses forward...
EXT. FIELDS OUTSIDE THE CITY OF PETA - SUNDOWN
They ride through an OCEAN OF DEAD GREEKS, DEAD EUROPEAN AND
AMERICAN SOLDIERS. Only a dozen dead OTTOMANS lay among them.
The bloody aftermath of the one-sided Battle of Peta.
BYRON
Spread out and look for survivors!
Byron and Alex dismount and search. Takis hesitates, then
joins, sick with fear and revulsion.
Alex kicks away a vulture, pecking at a Militiamans corpse.
Byron swallows the great lump in his throat as steps over the
slain rebels. He finds a patch of ST. GEORGE on a dead
Englishman. Next to him, Byron sees FELIX, face down in a puddle of his own blood. Byron notes
Felixs bite shaped BIRTHMARK, then sadly moves on...
Alex, Byron and Takis rejoin on the far side of the carnage.
ALEX
Some of these men were former
students of mine.
TAKIS
Fools. They took the Ottomans head
on. Whatd they think would happen?
Alex and Byron give Takis a dark look for that.
BYRON
We have to reach the vault. Another
loss like this will crush Greece.
EXT. GREEK COUNTRYSIDE - SUNDOWN
A rabbit chews at the leaves of flowers, when SHTICK! Kyras
javelin takes him.
Kyra reveals herself from the nearby trees - time for dinner.
EXT. KYRAS CAMP - NIGHT
Kyra roasts RABBIT MEAT on her javelin over a small campfire.
14.
Her horse WHINNIES slightly - Kyras ears and eyes up for
whatever spooked her horse. Sees nothing, senses everything.
She quickly pulls the meat off her javelin, and rests it on a
stone. Then, she DISAPPEARS into the darkness.
TWO HORSE THIEVES - one old, one young - appear from the
other side of the campfire. Both are armed with clubs.
YOUNG HORSE THIEF goes to Kyras horse. As hes untying it KYRA rushes into the campfire light, her javelin held high.
YAAAAHHH!
KYRA
KYRA (CONTD)
Old Thief whips his club at her, causing Kyra to duck and
fire at the same time - her shot is off the mark.
Old Thief finds Kyras horse, mounts it, and RIDES OFF. Hes
long gone, before Kyra can reload or rearm...
Now, its just Kyra, alone in the darkness. Without a horse.
In the distance to the West - she spies a LIGHTHOUSE, and
beneath, the lights of a SMALL TOWN...
EXT. OTTOMAN CHECKPOINT - IOANNINA, GREECE - NIGHT
An OTTOMAN OFFICER, and his team of armed Soldiers guard the
entrance to IOANNINA - a stone city on the shores of a lake,
currently occupied by the Ottomans.
The Ottoman Soldiers HALT Alex and his caravan at the gates.
OTTOMAN OFFICER
Where are you coming from?
ALEX
An excavation. Were returning to
the University.
OTTOMAN OFFICER
Youll have to wait outside til
morning to declare your finds.
15.
Byron reaches into a wagon, and brings out the CHAMBER POT.
BYRON
Perhaps, we could leave one of our
more valuable finds in your trust,
if youll allow us through tonight.
OTTOMAN OFFICER
(skeptical)
Looks to me like an old crapper.
To Takis horror and Alexs amusement, Byron keeps a straight
face and continues...
BYRON
This is a bowl of the Macedonian
royalty. Kings ate from this. I bet
you can still smell the savory
residue. Go ahead, take a whiff!
The Officer SNIFFS the pot, as Byron chokes down laughter.
Satisfied, the Officer lifts his head, waves them through.
EXT. STREETS OF IOANNINA, GREECE - CONTINUOUS
Out of Ottoman earshot, Byron bursts into a series of
giggles. Takis faces him, eyes drawn tight.
TAKIS
Almost getting us killed is funny?
BYRON
Any opportunity to stick it to
those brutes is worth the risk.
(to Alex)
Another point for Cambridge.
Alex smiles as he steers the caravan around a corner.
EXT. UNIVERSITY CAMPUS - IOANNINA, GREECE - NIGHT
Gas lamps illuminate a quad of three story manors. Off a
corner, a STONE TOWER looms above the campus.
Byron, Alex and Takis head for the entrance. Takis takes hold
of Alex sleeve - holds him back, as Byron continues.
TAKIS
(to Alex)
Tell me where were going next, so
I can arrange our passage.
16.
Alex rests a comforting hand on Takis shoulder.
ALEX
Takis, you have my complete
confidence. But, I need you here,
to protect the University archives.
Greece needs you here.
TAKIS
But, Ive been your assistant for
over a year, now...
Takis shoulder sags under Alex hand, as he looks to Byron
with jealousy, waiting at the entrance. This is a rejection.
ALEX
Be careful on your way home. Well
review your task in the morning.
Takis nods, walks off, dejected. Alex joins Byron.
BYRON
Did he want a bedtime story?
ALEX
Go easy, Byron. Hes a brilliant
student, one of my best.
BYRON
But, do you trust him?
Alex considers the question, then nods - confident.
INT. TOWER OFFICE - UNIVERSITY OF IOANNINA - NIGHT
Alex leads Byron into the dark, cluttered office. Locks the
door, lights the fireplace to illuminate the space.
Alexs office is home to many odd, ancient tools and
imaginative gadgets. A window overlooks the courtyard below.
Alex removes the mechanical wings from his satchel, mounts
them on a statue, where it shares space with hats and coats.
ALEX
To make it to the vault alive,
well need more than just us.
Byron uses a SPRING LOADED CORKSCREW - clearly, one of Alexs
designs - to POP the cork off of a fresh bottle of red.
BYRON
Anyone in mind? Besides Takis?
17.
ALEX
I know a smuggler, thief, a real
mercenary type. Ive fenced a few
odd pieces through him, all to fund
the war effort, of course.
BYRON
Of course. Whats his name?
ALEX
Simon. A Frenchman. I havent seen
him in months, but last I heard,
hed partnered up with a volatile
American and they were operating
out of Neochoraki, a town nearby.
BYRON
(sarcastic)
They sound like perfect companions.
Men to get us to the vault, then
kill us for the treasure.
ALEX
Its a dangerous time in Greece. We
need dangerous men to help us.
Alex sits heavily on a cot positioned under a window.
ALEX (CONTD)
Meanwhile, I truly need to rest.
You should do the same.
BYRON
The key to winning this war is now
in our possession and you want to
sleep? We should celebrate!
Byron polishes off the wine.
ALEX
No. The streets are swarming with
Ottomans. Every week I hear of a
poor student that ran afoul of an
Ottoman soldier.
(beat)
Im serious, Byron. Dont go out!
BYRON
Alright, I promise. Ill just work
on some poetry until I can sleep.
SMASH CUT TO:
18.
INT. TAVERN - IOANNINA, GREECE - NIGHT
Byron grips the bar to keep from falling over. His lips are
stained with red wine, and his fingers with black ink.
He sloppily turns to the Greek STUDENT next to him, slurs...
BYRON
Do you like poetry?
The Student shrugs. Byron CLEARS HIS THROAT, then reads
DRUNKEN SCRIBBLES from the parchment in front of him.
BYRON (CONTD)
When a man hath no freedom to fight
for at home / let him combat for
that of his neighbors. Let him
think of the glories of Greece and
of Rome / and get knocked on the
head for his labors...
Silence, while the Student waits for more. It never comes.
STUDENT
Sounds like half a poem.
BYRON
(mocking)
Thats because it is...half a poem.
And, I didnt ask for notes.
EXT. OTTOMAN AMBASSADORS VILLA - IOANNINA, GREECE - NIGHT
A palatial Villa - the front entrance guarded by two OTTOMAN
SENTRIES. Seeing TAKIS approach, they level their muskets.
OTTOMAN SENTRY
Stop! Youre out past curfew!
Takis bows to keep low and non-threatening as possible.
TAKIS
I have information for the Empire.
The Sentries exchange a knowing look - another Greek traitor.
INT. AMBASSADORS OFFICE - VILLA - NIGHT
A DOOR KNOCK alerts AMBASSADOR CAFER, 40s - fat, but sharp.
Its open!
CAFER
19.
The Sentry opens the door, and points at Takis behind him.
OTTOMAN SENTRY
This man claims to have information
for the Empire.
Cafer examines Takis, who still has his head down.
CAFER
I dont have time for another would
be spy with a story.
Finally, Takis looks up - confident.
TAKIS
Youll like this story.
MINUTES LATER
Cafer looks interested - Takis story impressed him.
CAFER
And the Chalice bowls in Ioannina?
TAKIS
Yes, with my former professor.
CAFER
And, this vault...where is it?
TAKIS
Would you need me, once I tell you?
Cafer looks at Takis in a different light - nearing respect.
CAFER
(to Guard)
Get me Captain Mahmet!
EXT. OTTOMAN TRAINING PIT - IOANNINA - NIGHT
A large hole dug in the ground where squads fight and train.
Now, lit up by torch-lights, twenty fatigued and bloodstained Ottoman SOLDIERS fight against GREEK SLAVES.
The Slaves have wooden weapons - the Ottomans have steel.
CAPT. MAHMET, 30s, a giant of an Ottoman and a seasoned
veteran, shouts commands over the din of the mock-battle.
MAHMET
Left flank, advance!
20.
The left flank PUSHES into the Slaves, who fight hard,
despite their useless weapons - and force the Ottomans back!
Stop!
MAHMET (CONTD)
All freeze, then back up. The Slaves stare hatefully at the
Ottomans, but Mahmet addresses the left flank that failed.
MAHMET (CONTD)
Lt. Nazim, your advance failed.
NAZIM, a slim and vicious officer, but now - exhausted.
NAZIM
My apologies, Captain Mahmet, sir.
Weve been butchering slaves all
day. Takes a toll on the arms. Sir.
MAHMET
These slaves fight to live - as our
enemies will at Athens. You arent
allowed to tire out in my brigade.
In the middle of Mahmets talk to Nazim, his eyes FLICKER
over Mahmets shoulder - which Mahmet notices. Mahmet turns,
and finds CAFERS MESSENGER.
CAFERS MESSENGER
Captain Mahmet, sir, your presence
is requested by Ambassador Cafer.
Mahmet frowns in frustration...
INT. AMBASSADORS OFFICE - VILLA - NIGHT
Mahmet enters - cleaned up, hair oiled, dress uniform. He
eyes Takis suspiciously, then turns to Cafer MAHMET
Thank you for your invitation
tonight, Ambassador Cafer. Your
hospitality is unrivaled.
CAFER
As is your reputation for bravery.
Which is why as of tonight, youre
relieved of your command and on a
personal errand for me.
MAHMET
(holding back outrage)
But, we march for Athens tomorrow.
21.
CAFER
This task takes priority.
MAHMET
Sir, why such a sudden change?
Cafer opens his desk, flips an ANCIENT GOLD COIN to Mahmet.
CAFER
Thats from an excavation of an
ancient Greek palace. There were
hundreds, each worth a fortune.
Mahmet tosses the coin back to Cafer - he catches it.
CAFER (CONTD)
Now, this...student...knows where
to find a greater treasure, which
the Greeks are already pursuing.
You will assist him in his task.
Mahmet GLARES at Takis, who swallows back his fear...
MAHMET
Yes, sir.
(beat)
But, I hope that my privileges as
an officer will not be rescinded.
CAFER
(grins)
Of course not, Captain. Arrest
anyone necessary to your mission,
or your morale.
EXT. STREETS OF IOANNINA, GREECE - NIGHT
Takis leads Mahmet through the streets, halt at the
UNIVERSITY GROUNDS. Takis points out the towers WINDOW.
TAKIS
The Chalice bowls up there.
As Takis steps onto the grounds, hes pulled back by Mahmet.
MAHMET
Youre keeping me from the fight.
TAKIS
Trust me, no battle will rival the
glory this treasure will bring you.
22.
Mahmet spots a pretty Greek Girl walking by. He flashes a
predatory smile at her, which sends her running off.
TAKIS (CONTD)
I know where she lives, and you
will have her...and plenty other
companions along our journey.
INT. TOWER OFFICE - UNIVERSITY OF IOANNINA - NIGHT
The sound of a SKELETON KEY WORKING A LOCK. Seconds later,
the DOOR YAWNS OPEN. Quietly, Takis leads Mahmet inside.
Together, they search the room, careful not to wake Alex...
Takis finds Alexs satchel, and removes the CHALICE BOWL.
Alex stirs awake to SHADOWS bobbing around in the darkness.
He TURNS THE GAS of a bedside lantern to find Takis hovering over him, the Chalice bowl in his hands.
Alexs eyes drift to the Ottoman officer behind Takis, his
gloved hand on the ivory grip of a giant DRAGOON PISTOL.
ALEX
Takis...what are you doing?
TAKIS
Tell us where to find the rest of
the Chalice, Professor.
ALEX
(shocked - then defiant)
I have nothing to say to a traitor.
Mahmet SLAMS the gun hilt on Alex head, causing him to spill
to the floor - bleeding, and in great pain.
TAKIS
Dont play brave. Tell us, and
well leave.
ALEX
Buried in the Skotino Caves on
Crete. In the ruins of TAKIS
Daedalus labyrinth. Of course.
Goodbye, Professor.
With a sinister grin, Mahmet aims his dragoon at Alex...
23.
Alex SNATCHES the lantern, HURLS it at Takis and Mahmets
feet. A BLAST OF FIRE pushes the Ottoman and traitor back!
In the confusion, Alex scrambles to the wall, and snatches
the mechanical wings from the mannequin.
Mahmets dragoon BLASTS, Alex GASPS just as he JUMPS OUT OF THE WINDOW! Takis rushes the window, and sees EXT. STONE TOWER - UNIVERSITY OF IOANNINA - CONTINUOUS
- Alex FREE-FALL to the cobbled ground ten stories below...
Alexs hand finds the release, he hits it - and the gears of
the WINGS crank and click, as the joints SNAP into place!
Alex FLIES, ten feet off the ground at an incredible speed.
When, to his surprise, he spots BYRON STANDING IN THE STREET WITH A BOTTLE OF WINE, and an
UGLY WOMAN on each arm. Alex tries to pull up, but WHAM!
Alex, Byron, and the Women TUMBLE, SLAM against a house...
The Women get up, sprint away in fear.
BYRON
What the hell, man?! I know they
werent the prettiest, but...
Byron finds ALEXS BLOOD, from the musket ball in his back.
ALEX
(weakly)
Takis brought an Ottoman to kill
me...they stole the Chalice bowl!
Alex pushes his satchel into Byrons hands.
ALEX (CONTD)
Take my journal. Takis thinks the
Chalice stem is in Crete, but I
fooled him...its in Athens...in
the head of Hepheastus!
Alex coughs up blood, fading fast. Byron, overwhelmed with
emotion, can only cradle his friends head.
24.
ALEX (CONTD)
Find Simon. Hell help you take
back what belongs to Greece.
BANG! Another pistol shot from Mahmet RICOCHETS off the
stones close to Byron.
Byron looks up, finds Mahmet and Takis in the window. Mahmet
grins, then disappears - hes coming.
BYRON
Alex, my friend...
But, nothing - Alex is dead. Byron chokes on his sorrow, then
puts a coin over each of Alexs eyes.
BYRON (CONTD)
The freedom you were born for. Ill
see you again. Perhaps, sooner than
either of us would like.
With that, Byron quickly unstraps the wings from Alex,
compresses them to fit into the satchel, then rushes off.
EXT. DOCKS - SEASIDE TOWN OF PARGA, GREECE - MORNING
A rocky port town, cut into the mountains above the ocean.
Kyra warily explores the busy pier - unsure of how to judge
the merchant ships, traders, or any of their odd work. Shes
away from home for the first time and overwhelmed.
She edges her way towards a GREEK CAPTAIN. He ignores her,
until Kyra shows him her COIN PURSE. He stops, sizes her up.
KYRA
I need to get to Arcadia. I have
money, and I can work.
The Greek Captain considers the money, but shakes his head.
GREEK CAPTAIN
No women. Drives the men crazy.
Takis, standing near a gangway to a TRANSPORT SHIP flying
Greek flags, spots Kyra across the pier. He tries on a smile.
TAKIS
May I be of assistance, miss?
KYRA
Will your ship pass by Arcadia?
25.
TAKIS
Matter of fact, yes. And, unlike
these fellows, we take women.
Takis eyes the silver necklace as he takes Kyras money.
TAKIS (CONTD)
If youll follow me...
Kyra, sensing something amiss, hesitates.
TAKIS (CONTD)
You coming? Were pushing off soon,
and itll be weeks before you find
another ship that takes women.
Finally, Kyra nods, follows Takis up the gangway.
INT. BELOW DECK - TRANSPORT SHIP - DAY
Takis leads Kyra to a HATCH. He pushes it open, allowing Kyra
a look inside - dim, but she makes out a BUNK between crates.
TAKIS
Youll find it comfortable enough.
Kyra slowly steps into the room, and as her eyes adjust,
Takis quickly RIPS off her necklace and SLAMS THE DOOR SHUT.
She PANICS, as the lock CLICKS into place from the outside.
Kyra tries it, but it wont budge. She BANGS - nothing.
KYRA
Let me out of here!
Shes trapped - in what she now realizes is the HOLD. Once
her eyes adjust fully, she sees THE HAREM OF CAPTURED GREEK WOMEN, COWERING IN THE CORNER.
Their skins bruised, their faces tear streaked. Notably
among them - the Pretty Girl from Ioannina.
INT. OFFICERS QUARTERS - BELOW DECK - TRANSPORT SHIP - DAY
Takis finds Mahmet polishing his kilij - a curved Turkish
sword - at a table. Nazim and several other Ottoman Soldiers
share a hookah in the corner of the room.
26.
TAKIS
Captain, Ive added a new girl to
your harem. Youll like her...shes
more beautiful than the others.
MAHMET
Nazim, see that shes scrubbed of
peasant filth and scented. But, not
touched. Then, bring her to me.
EXT. NEOCHORAKI, GREECE - DAY
A speck of lawlessness, comprised of a dozen saloons, rundown
inns and brothels. Real wild west atmosphere.
Byron trots through on horseback, catching suspicious stares
from the cutthroat residents - Greeks, Turks, Europeans,
Americans. Their only allegiance is to money.
Byron stops outside a tavern, with a sign swinging on one
hinge: THE BRONZE FLAGON.
INT. THE BRONZE FLAGON - NEOCHORAKI, GREECE - CONTINUOUS
At the bar, Byron signals to the BARKEEPER with a coin.
BYRON
A flagon of your finest.
The Barkeeper pockets the coin, then fills a wooden flagon
with the dregs from abandoned drinks at the bar. Byron WINCES
in disgust, drinks from the flagon anyway.
BYRON (CONTD)
Only the faintest hint of tobacco
juice in this. Bravo.
Byron slides another coin on the bar.
BYRON (CONTD)
Im looking for Simon. Know him?
BARKEEPER
Never heard of him.
The Barkeeper pockets the coin anyway, then shuffles off.
BYRON
(dry)
Youve been of great assistance.
27.
Byron scans faces in the bar, but without knowledge of
Simons appearance, its useless. Off to the side, he spots THE TURK, a mechanical chess machine operated by an AUTOMATON
player wearing the garb of Turkish nobility.
Byron approaches the chess player - PEYTON DAVIS, mid-20s.
Hes American, judging by his outdated American military
peacoat and tri-cornered hat. Busted knuckles and salt grime.
BYRON (CONTD)
My eyes, the Turk! Theyre all the
rage in London!
Davis ignores Byron. As Davis goes to move his queen BYRON (CONTD)
Tsk, tsk. I wouldnt do that...
Davis gives Byron an impatient, but curious look.
BYRON (CONTD)
Your plays too aggressive. Seems
to me, some defense is in order...
(shows on the board)
Protect your knight with this pawn.
Thatll keep you in the fight.
Davis ignores the advice, and moves his queen as he intended.
The Turk responds immediately, and CHECKMATES Davis.
BYRON (CONTD)
Checkmate. Shouldve listened...
Furious, Davis bolts up, draws a COLLIER PISTOL - a sixchambered flintlock revolver - and AIMS IT AT BYRONS HEAD!
DAVIS
I dont remember asking for advice.
BYRON
I only gave you my thoughts. The
machine won the match.
A beat of silent tension, before Davis turns and BLASTS off
the Automatons head, which CLANKS to the ground. Severed
wires in its neck SPEW STEAM.
BYRON (CONTD)
But, you won the fight afterwards.
Davis turns his gun to Byron, pulls the hammer back. Byron
nearly trips over his own feet as he backs into the wall.
28.
DAVIS
My turn to give you some advice...
SIMON (O.S.)
Playing the sore loser again,
Davis?
Byron and Davis turn to SIMON, 40s, a bulky, heavily armed
Frenchman. Skin weathered and ragged from years on the sea.
DAVIS
Ive got this, Simon.
BYRON
Simon? Do you know Alex Pappas?
Simons brow wrinkles slightly, then he shakes his head.
BYRON (CONTD)
Then, have you smuggled Greek
antiquities to raise money for the
rebellion with another Professor?
At that, HEADS turn toward them. Simon stares them all down,
prompting them to return to their conversations.
SIMON
Follow me. Big ears in here.
INT. BACK ROOM - BRONZE FLAGON - MOMENTS LATER
A tri-barreled musket rests in the corner, next to a number
of other muskets and swords. Davis leans against the back
wall, drinking from a glass of beer.
Byron takes a seat across from Simon at a long table covered
with SEA MAPS and SHIPPING SCHEDULES.
SIMON
First of all, who are you?
BYRON
George Gordon Byron, or Lord Byron
if youre one for titles and
formalities?
By the looks on Simon and Davis face, they are not.
BYRON (CONTD)
Yes, well, Im here because Alex
told me to find you.
29.
SIMON
So I assumed. But, wheres Alex?
Byron takes a moment to formulate the word.
BYRON
Dead. At the hands of the Ottomans
and one of his own students.
Simon shuts his eyes and shakes his head, saddened. He was a
friend. Davis straightens in the corner, fists clenched.
DAVIS
Goddammit, did they see you? Were
you followed?
BYRON
I wasnt followed...
SIMON
Please, Davis. Now, why did Alex
direct you to us?
BYRON
May I ask, are either of you
scholars of the ancient world?
DAVIS
More like scholars of the moment.
BYRON
Well said. Alex and I were after an
ancient treasure, so great that...
(beat)
Id say more, but I feel your
imagination needs exercise.
Davis draws his Collier, and places it on the table.
DAVIS
Im imagining a hole in your chest.
Byron shrinks back, as he delicately touches his chest. Davis
glances at the several ORNATE RINGS adorning Byrons fingers.
SIMON
So. You need our help finding this
treasure, as you call it.
DAVIS
Do you have any idea what its like
out there? Ottoman blockades,
checkpoints, raids, seizures.
30.
SIMON
Were running a gauntlet that grows
only harder. Too much risk,
attacking the Ottomans.
BYRON
If you ever made money off of
Alexs antiquities, believe me, for
his sake. This is a worthy risk.
Simon looks to Davis - Davis nods, reluctantly.
SIMON
Wed need a third of the score.
DAVIS
A third for each of us.
BYRON
But, thats two-thirds!
DAVIS
A poet and a master of arithmetic.
BYRON
You have heard of me! Well, then,
allow me to add another incentive.
I shall personalize a sonnet for
your sweetie, or mother. Theyll be
quite impressed, trust me.
DAVIS
No, but well have those rings. A
real deposit, in case the
treasures imagined.
BYRON
But, these are family heirlooms.
DAVIS
Ill tell my kids that.
Byron sadly removes his rings, disperses to the smugglers.
SIMON
So, how do we start?
BYRON
To get to the treasure, we need the
vault key. Part of its on a ship
that will set sail to Crete soon.
(stands)
Well be outnumbered and outgunned.
This will require some trickery.
31.
DAVIS
(grins)
This is Greece. Theres a trick for
everything.
EXT. MEDITERRANEAN SEA - DAY
Sails full, the TRANSPORT SHIP cuts across the choppy waters
as it rounds the cape of Southern Greece.
The Greek flags come down - the OTTOMAN FLAGS are raised...
EXT. TOP DECK - TRANSPORT SHIP - CONTINUOUS
The FIRST MATE rushes to the TRANSPORT CAPTAIN at the helm.
FIRST MATE
A distressed ship to starboard,
Captain! One of ours!
The Captain raises a spyglass. He scopes an OTTOMAN SHIP in
the distance, flying a WHITE DISTRESS FLAG.
TRANSPORT CAPTAIN
Damned Greek pirates...
(yells out)
Deliver the challenge! And if she
answers wrong, finish her!
The Sailors along the starboard gunwale LOAD CANNONS.
INT. OFFICERS QUARTERS - BELOW DECK - TRANSPORT - CONTINUOUS
Nazim leads Kyra, freshly bathed and dressed in Turkish
silks, into the cabin. Mahmet, half dressed, receives her.
NAZIM
Be careful, sir. She bit me twice.
Nazim shows a GNAWED HAND. Mahmet grins, ready for his sport,
and dismisses Nazim with a nod.
Then, Kyra CHARGES WITH A FIST, which Mahmet catches! He
spins her around and CLUTCHES her, smelling her hair...
BONG! The deep bass of a large naval bell BELLOWS on deck
above them, rattling the ships wooden framework.
Irritated, Mahmet returns to Kyra just before another BONG!
32.
Mahmet sighs - he SHOVES Kyra to a beam, KNOTS her hands
around it with a length of hemp rope.
MAHMET
Duty before pleasure, Im afraid.
Mahmet quickly dresses himself with clothes and weapons, then
exits. Kyra struggles to free herself, to no avail...
EXT. MAIN DECK - TRANSPORT SHIP - CONTINUOUS
BONG! With the final part of the bell challenge complete, the
Transport Captain awaits the distressed ships response...
It finally comes, in the form of its own bell RINGING out
once, and the LOWERING of its distress flag to half-mast.
TRANSPORT CAPTAIN
Prepare the mooring lines!
Sailors disperse with orders, as Mahmet joins the Captain.
MAHMET
Why are we straying off course?
TRANSPORT CAPTAIN
I wont leave a sister ship
stranded to pirates and pagans.
MAHMET
When a horse starts limping in the
cavalry, we put it down.
TRANSPORT CAPTAIN
Well recover the wounded and
cargo, then return to our course.
Mahmet studies the ship, suspicious. Nods to Nazim to follow.
EXT. DECK - TRANSPORT SHIP - DAY
The two ships now side by side, Sailors toss grappling hooks
over the distressed ships gunwales to secure the union.
Then, PLANKS drop across the gap, allowing the Transport
Captain, his First Mate, and two more Sailors to cross onto EXT. DISTRESSED SHIPS DECK - CONTINUOUS
Hacked lines, gunpowder scorches, bloodstains...
33.
The Captain and Sailors draw their flintlocks. Then, the
Captain signals - the other Sailors join, but nobody sees EXT. OFF THE STERN OF THE DISTRESSED SHIP - CONTINUOUS
The skiff, where Davis, Simon and Byron release lines from
the distressed ship into the waters below.
As Simon and Davis row, Byron poses like George Washington in
the skiffs bow.
BYRON
This must be how Washington felt.
Davis shakes his head to Simon, whos more entertained.
EXT. PORT SIDE OF TRANSPORT SHIP - CONTINUOUS
Davis and Simon hurl GRAPPLING HOOKS up over the Transports
gunwale, then climb. Byron hesitates, afraid...
DAVIS
(whispered, to Byron)
Well need every man and...poet.
Byron breathes deep, summoning courage, then grabs the rope.
INT. OFFICERS QUARTERS - TRANSPORT SHIP - CONTINUOUS
Kyra, searching for a way out of her bonds, notices a BURNING
CANDLE ensconced halfway up a neighboring beam.
She SHIMMIES up her beam, using the strength of her coiled
legs and the knot of her bonds to support her weight...
A final PUSH exposes her bound wrists to the open flame. She
holds her hands there - ENDURES THE PAIN WITH GRITTED TEETH.
She chokes back screams as the fire EATS AWAY at the rope and
scorches her skin, until finally the rope SNAPS apart.
Kyra DROPS, lands hard on the ground, then RUSHES out.
INT. CORRIDOR - BELOW DECK - TRANSPORT SHIP - CONTINUOUS
Kyra creeps down the hallway, but stops at the SIGHT of Takis
through a porthole, examining the Chalice bowl at a desk.
34.
INT. BRIDGE - DISTRESSED SHIP - CONTINUOUS
The Captain pushes into the Bridge to find A PILE OF BOUND AND GAGGED OTTOMAN SAILORS. He removes the
cloth from the DISTRESSED SHIPS CAPTAINs mouth.
DISTRESSED SHIPS CAPTAIN
Stowaways! They took us at night!
TRANSPORT CAPTAIN
Where are they now?
DISTRESSED SHIPS CAPTAIN
Already on your ship!
The Transport Captain rushes back out to the DECK, where he
discovers Davis, Simon, and Byron staring them down from behind a row
of the Transport Ships cannons.
EXT. DECK - TRANSPORT SHIP - CONTINUOUS
Byron, the only one not aiming a cannon, points his pe at
the surprised Captain and his men.
BYRON
You may fire on my command. Fire!
Davis and Simon do not fire.
DAVIS
(annoyed, to Simon)
Now, hes brave.
SIMON
(chuckles)
Let em have it!
BOOM! BOOM!
The cannonballs BLAST the distressed ship, sending the
Transport Captain and his Sailors tumbling into the waters
amid a spray of splintered wood...
INT. TAKIS QUARTERS - TRANSPORT SHIP - CONTINUOUS
The cannon BLASTS above deck RATTLE the bulkheads and sway
the cabin floors.
35.
Takis steadies his balance. Curious, he stuffs the Chalice
bowl into his robes, then heads out to investigate.
Exiting, he passes right by Kyra, hidden behind the hatch.
She DUCKS into Takis chambers.
Kyra searches, but cant find her necklace. She SLAMS her
fists on the table - thats where she spots the HOLD KEY...
EXT. DECK - TRANSPORT SHIP - CONTINUOUS
Finished with the distressed ship, Davis and Simon draw arms.
SIMON
Ill search the bridge. Davis,
below.
(to Byron)
You, scream if you see an Ottoman.
DAVIS
You can at least do that, right?
Byrons lips curl in annoyance, as Davis chuckles...
INT. CORRIDOR - BELOW DECK - TRANSPORT SHIP - CONTINUOUS
Takis hustles down the corridor towards the stairs, but stops
when he HEARS FOOTSTEPS...
Takis quickly escapes into another passage, as Kyra appears
at one end of the corridor and Davis appears at the other.
Kyra and Davis meet in the middle, size each other up. Kyras
lovely in the silks, but battle-ready. Davis is oddly
dressed, but hes got a gun and a sword.
DAVIS
Youre Greek, but the outfit is
Turkish. Whose side are you on?
KYRA
Yours, if youll help me. Theres
more girls locked in the hold!
DAVIS
Ill help you out, but first, I
have to take the ship.
KYRA
You help them out, and theyll take
the damn ship for you!
36.
Davis thinks about that...
THE HOLD - MOMENTS LATER
Kyra unlocks the door, pokes her head inside at the harem.
KYRA (CONTD)
Cmon! Were fighting back!
The captive girls spring up and flood out of their prison, as
Kyra and Davis hand out NAVAL AXES and CHAINS to each.
EXT. DECK - TRANSPORT SHIP - CONTINUOUS
Mahmet, Nazim, and the Soldiers emerge from a trapdoor near
the stern. Mahmet spots Simon on the BRIDGE, moves to ambush.
Creeping up on Simon, they fail to notice Byron - when they
finally do, hes aiming a CANNON at them.
BYRON
Give the Devil my regards!
With that, Byron PULLS the cap chain, AND...nothing.
MAHMET
Ill bet you forgot the primer.
Mahmet draws his kilij, ready to carve Byron down to size.
Takis emerges from below, chased out by Kyra, Davis and the
WOMEN, armed with chains and axes.
TAKIS
Mahmet, save me!
Takis cowers behind Mahmet as Simon rushes to join Davis.
A ferocious MELEE breaks out between both sides! The Greek
Women CHARGE the Ottomans in fury!
Byron drops to his knees to crawl to safety, as Davis, Simon,
and the Women take out Ottomans all around.
On his knees, Byron CRAWLS towards Takis, now hiding behind
crates, through the BATTLE above him.
Byron does help, however - he TRIPS an Ottoman thats about
to stab Simon. Then, Davis KICKS an Ottoman over Byron.
When Byron reaches Takis, he puts his sword to his throat.
37.
BYRON
Like the thief of fire, will thou
withstand the shock?
BAM! Out of nowhere, Kyra CLOCKS Takis, dazes him.
BYRON (CONTD)
Ah, damn it all! You ruined it!
(explains)
I recite a line of my poetry, then
deliver the finishing blow. Thats
how I always imagined it happens!
Kyra ignores Byron, removes her necklace from Takis neck.
Byron reaches into Takis robes, finds the Chalice bowl as Simon and Nazim BATTLE - Simon STABS Nazim, tosses him off.
Right after Mahmet kills a Greek Woman, and Davis kills a
Soldier - their eyes lock. A beat of STARING, then the CHARGE!
Although Davis is smaller than Mahmet, he ATTACKS with a
ferocity that surprises the veteran warrior.
But, Davis cant match Mahmet for experience and strength.
His daring attempts at a lethal strike wear him out...
Mahmet finds his moment, and SLAMS Davis saber down on the
deck, under his kilij. He PUNCHES Davis with his free hand.
Dazed, Davis STUMBLES, and Mahmet goes for the kill, when KYRA CHARGES his flank with a dropped kilij! She swings at
Mahmet, who evades - but that gives Davis an opening...
He RAMS Mahmet over the gunwale, into the water!
KYRA
He was mine!
Kyra snatches Davis Collier, FIRES at Mahmet in the waves.
WATER - Mahmet DIVES, as shots ZIP around him underwater.
TRANSPORT GUNWALE - Davis yanks his gun back.
DAVIS
Gimme that! Who taught you to aim?!
Davis sights in on the water, but Mahmet has DISAPPEARED FROM
VIEW...leaving Takis as the only enemy still on board.
38.
They circle him, push him towards the edge. Byron GRINS holds up the Chalice bowl for Takis to see it one last time.
TAKIS
(pleading)
All I wanted was to help find the
treasure, so my name would have its
place in the history books!
Byron steps forward, into Takis face.
BYRON
It will. Nobody forgets a traitor.
Byron PUNCHES Takis overboard! Simon, Davis and Kyra join him
to watch Takis struggle to swim in his thick robes.
Davis leans over the gunwale, his Collier sighted on Takis.
Davis, no.
BYRON (CONTD)
39.
EXT. TOP DECK - TRANSPORT SHIP - NIGHT
Davis works the helm. Kyra, back in shepherds clothes,
watches him, impressed with his mastery of seafaring.
KYRA
(to Davis)
Are we safe sailing at night?
DAVIS
No chance running aground this far
out. You want to get to Athens past
enemy blockades, this is how.
(beat)
Want to try the wheel?
Kyra smiles, nods - she definitely wants to try.
DAVIS (CONTD)
Too bad youre not the Captain.
Kyra sneers as Davis chuckles. She leaves to join Simon and
Byron, both inspecting the Chalice bowl with great interest.
SIMON
Thats the key to the treasure?
Kyra eyes the bowl.
KYRA
Its very pretty. But, not a key.
BYRON
Its part of a key, made by
Daedalus himself. The other pieces
are hidden in Athens.
KYRA
Daedalus is a myth. Im a shepherd,
not dumb.
BYRON
Oh, but Daedalus was very real, a
mortal man. But, as his legend
grew, so did the embellishment of
his deeds. Much like Achilles. Or DAVIS
You, Lord Byron?
BYRON
I should be so lucky, Capt. Davis!
(to Kyra)
Daedalus was a brilliant engineer.
40.
BYRON (CONT'D)
Aside from the labyrinth and the
Icarus wings, he built boats that
sailed underwater, statues that
fought and danced. And, vaults to
protect great treasures.
Kyra smirks - she doesnt believe a word.
DAVIS
So, the vault is in Athens?
BYRON
No, the vault is under Mt. Lycaon,
in Arcadia.
KYRA
(stunned)
If youre headed for Arcadia,
Im coming with you. My fathers
there, waiting for me.
DAVIS
The hell you are! Well drop you
and the other girls in Athens.
Then, youre on your own.
Kyra grabs a MUSKET, points out a lantern posted on the bow.
KYRA
See that lantern?
With an expert eye, she aims, and BLASTS it to pieces.
BYRON
Well, Im sold.
Byron smiles at Kyra, then looks to Simon. Simon shrugs in
non-enthusiastic assent. Davis balks.
DAVIS
Dont think youre getting a cut of
my treasure for shooting lanterns.
KYRA
I just want to get to Arcadia.
Davis DRAWS BOTH COLLIERS, swings them out and BLASTS two
nearby lanterns without looking.
Impressive, but plunging all into darkness, save moonlight.
BYRON
It seems we all have a bright
future together.
41.
EXT. SHORES OF THE MEDITERRANEAN - NIGHT
Mahmet rows the lifeboat into shore. He and Takis climb out.
MAHMET
Well need to find another ship.
TAKIS
Forget Crete. Ive a better plan.
MAHMET
Theres no other plan! My men died
for your damned cup, and Ill sink
Crete to find the ones that did it!
TAKIS
Youll get the chance, when we beat
them to the vault. But, well need
more men. Wheres your unit camped?
Mahmet scans the horizon, gets his bearing.
MAHMET
Far. At least five days ride. But Mahmet removes a STRATEGIC MAP - showing Ottoman unit camps from his pocket, examines it under the moonlight.
MAHMET (CONTD)
Theres a unit marching East of
here. Ill arrange for a few
recruits. But, well need horses.
Mahmet looks farther down the shore - LIGHTS, a COASTAL TOWN.
EXT. BOW - TRANSPORT SHIP - NIGHT
Kyra, alone and fondling her necklace, peers out over the
moonlit waters as the ship rocks gently beneath her feet.
Byron approaches from behind, shares in the view.
BYRON
Breathtaking, isnt it? Even I have
trouble putting it into words.
KYRA
Ive never been on a ship before.
(beat)
Ive never been further than a few
miles from my fathers farm.
42.
BYRON
Isnt the world an exciting place?
KYRA
I was kidnapped and made a slave
within two days of leaving home.
BYRON
(backtracking)
More of a two sided coin, this
world is...
Kyra chuckles, then turns to Byron.
KYRA
I dont believe theres any vault
thats going to save Greece.
BYRON
Im a sentimental man to start, but
I do believe. If were right, we
can win Greece back. I saw what the
Ottomans did at Peta...
Kyras eyes light up, hopeful.
KYRA
My father was at Peta! Did you see
him? Hes about this tall, with
black hair, and brown eyes.
BYRON
Could you be more specific? The
Greeks were all a bit...swarthy.
KYRA
(remembers)
Oh! He had a birthmark, on his
right arm. Shaped like a bite mark.
IMAGES FLASH IN BYRONS MIND - the birthmark on Felixs arm.
Byron shakes the images away, finds Kyras questioning gaze.
BYRON
No. I didnt see any man like that.
KYRA
But, there were survivors.
BYRON
I can only assume...
43.
KYRA
(assured)
Then, he was one of them.
Goodnight, Lord Byron.
She walks off, disappears below deck, passing Davis on his
way up. They exchange a glance, but nothing more.
Davis joins Byron in the bow, hands him a bottle of wine.
DAVIS
Simon found a crate below. I hate
drinking alone, and I figured
youre thirsty.
Byron is surprised, and touched by the gesture.
BYRON
Yet again, your instincts were spot
on, Capt. Davis. Thank you.
Byron uncorks the bottle, downs half of it in a single gulp.
DAVIS
Yeah, long day.
BYRON
May I ask you for some advice? You
seem like a straightforward bloke.
Davis grabs the bottle of wine, swallows a mouthful. Nods.
BYRON (CONTD)
Our new friend, Kyra...I have to
tell her something of urgency and
importance, but Im not sure how.
DAVIS
Thats whats wrong with you poets.
Always searching for words. All
thats needed is action. Give her a
kiss, see how she likes it.
BYRON
No, no, its nothing like that.
(beat)
Besides, shes a bit rural for me.
DAVIS
Feral, more like...
44.
BYRON
(grows serious)
I might, possibly, might have
seen...Kyras father dead at Peta.
DAVIS
(shocked)
Then you gotta tell her. And soon.
Byron kills the bottle, tosses the empty overboard.
DAVIS (CONTD)
I guess were done drinking, then.
Davis descends below deck again, leaving Byron to think.
EXT. GREEK COUNTRYSIDE - MORNING
Hearing the FAINT DRUMMING of an Ottoman DRUM CORPS, Mahmet
halts his and Takis horses. He scans the horizon, finds - an OTTOMAN BATTALION marching in the distance.
MAHMET
Its General Otep. Wait here, or
youll be todays first dead Greek.
TAKIS
You sure you can convince him?
Mahmet sneers, then GALLOPS OFF to GENERAL OTEP - the big,
heavy fisted man on the lead horse.
GENERAL OTEP
Capt. Mahmet. Are you lost?
MAHMET
Gen. Otep, sir. Im here on the
order of Ambassador Cafer.
GENERAL OTEP
Ha! A promotion to errand boy.
Youll make a fine politician.
MAHMET
Im commandeering twelve men.
The General CHUCKLES - not going to happen.
GENERAL OTEP
Must be an important errand.
Cafers hashish?
45.
MAHMET
If you refuse, General, I have it
in my power to arrest you and bring
you to the Ambassadors court. Sir.
That hits the General twice. Surprise, then realization - not
only is Mahmet permitted to arrest him, hes capable. Otep
considers his unfortunate position...
EXT. THICK WOODS - ARCADIA, GREECE - NIGHT
Mahmet and Takis lead a dozen of Oteps SOLDIERS through the
shadowy woods by torchlight.
Takis looks ahead to the rounded peak of MT. LYCAON, a few
miles off, lit by the full moon. Takis grins - theyre close.
WHISPERS among the commandeered Soldiers as their eyes shift
from shadow to shadow, the spaces between the dark trees.
A branch CRACKS in the dark. The Soldiers turn, as their
whispers grow into open talk - Mahmet EAVESDROPS.
SOLDIER 1
We should turn back!
SOLDIER 2
We shouldve kept out of here.
A furious Mahmet halts his horse, turns to the men.
MAHMET
Why should we turn back?
(to Soldier 2)
You. Tell me why.
SOLDIER 2
There are...beasts in these woods,
sir.
MAHMET
(sneers)
Beasts. You mean, rebels?
SOLDIER 1
We mean beasts, sir. Three weeks
ago, Lt. Hassan led a patrol
through here. He never came out.
MAHMET
Lt. Hassan is likely still lost,
because Hassan is a fool.
46.
SOLDIER 1
One man returned. He was insane. He
raved about...claws and hair,
monstrous things that came from the
shadows, and devoured his unit.
Soldier 2s horse WHINNIES, shakes its head. Frightened.
The Soldiers regard the horse with new fear. The beasts are
close. Mahmet returns to Takis with a bored expression.
MAHMET
Soldiers are superstitious,
vulnerable to pagan beliefs.
A HOWL in the darkness. Then, more HOWLS join from all
directions. The Soldiers grip their muskets, tremble in fear.
Takis face turns WHITE as his cowardice bubbles to the
surface. Mahmet draws his kilij and a dragoon.
A FLASH OF FUR darts between trees, and disappears before
anyone can make out its full form. But, its big. HUGE.
Mahmet turns back at the sound of a SCREAM, just in time to
see Soldier 2 DRAGGED OFF into the shadows.
MUSKETS BLAST WILDLY into the darkness, hit nothing...
The muzzle flashes reveal GIANT WOLVES, ON THEIR HIND LEGS.
SOLDIER 1 screams, as hes SNATCHED away into the darkness,
then SILENCE. Flashes of CLAWS, EYES, TEETH, as more fall.
Takis PANICS and GALLOPS OFF. The remaining Soldiers follow.
MAHMET (CONTD)
Get back here and fight!
Giant CLAWS slash Mahmets horse. It tumbles, spills Mahmet!
Mahmet BOUNDS UP - kilij drawn. He spots MOVEMENT, and SLASHES, hits SOMETHING - blood on the blade. The FURRY MASS,
injured from Mahmets strike, SCURRIES off.
Mahmet mounts an uninjured horse, RIDES from the HOWLING...
EXT. PORT OF PIREAS - JUST OUTSIDE ATHENS - NIGHT
The Transport Ship eases into the busy port - a madhouse of
sailors, rebels and trade.
47.
In the distance - ATHENS. Tendrils of smoke rise from several
charred buildings. A city under siege.
EXT. STREETS OF ATHENS - DAY
MUSKET FIRE CRACKS through the incredible blend of ancient
streets and marketplaces that make up 1822 Athens.
The citys war-torn, bloody - practically hell on earth.
Byron leads the party past MILITARIZED ATHENIANS, either
limping away from the battle or resupplying to return.
BYRON
Athens is much improved since I was
last here.
Simon watches as a window opens above them, and a RESIDENT
dumps a bucket of EXCREMENT into the streets.
SIMON
Yes. The gunpowder in the air
really covers the smell of shite.
The party walks up the road to the crest, which opens to the ACROPOLIS: the civic, theatre, and temple district on a hill.
Now, barricaded and guarded by the Ottomans.
BYRON
Ah! But the Parthenon still stands,
as does the Theatre of Dionysus!
SIMON
Wheres the rest of the Chalice?
BYRON
In the head of the Hephaestus
statue, on the Acropolis. The last
members of the Cult of Daedalus hid
it there for safekeeping.
Davis counts Ottomans positioned along the Acropolis walls.
DAVIS
Those bastards have really dug in.
KYRA
Yes, like moths in your coat.
DAVIS
At least my clothes arent made out
of tree bark.
48.
Kyra frowns, and would respond, but BYRON
Kyra, Davis, listen up. I know a
way in, from Alexs journal.
Theres a tunnel beneath the
library that leads to the theatre.
Byron points to the LIBRARY, on the edge of the Acropolis.
Musket fire POPS between the Library and the Ottomans.
DAVIS
Of course, the theater. Maybe
theres time for a live reading of
your poetry, Lord.
BYRON
(re: the dug-in Ottomans)
Better them than an English
audience.
EXT. LIBRARY - UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS - DAY
MUSKETS poke from the highest windows, exchanging GUNFIRE
with the Ottomans covering behind the Acropolis walls.
Our heroes RUSH through the frontline CHAOS of the urban
battlefield, into the library.
INT. LIBRARY - UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS - CONTINUOUS
A center of rebel operations. Rebels prep and repair
munitions as enemy fire SHATTERS glass and SHREDS books.
A musket ball CRASHES through a window close to our heroes.
All duck, but Byron HITS THE FLOOR.
BYRON
Whos ready for that tunnel?
Byron slinks off, and Kyra follows him. Simon turns to Davis SIMON
Ill go upstairs and cover you when
you cross through the theater.
DAVIS
Alright.
(privately)
If theres a choice, save me first.
Simon grins, nods. Davis follows Byron and Kyra down.
49.
LIBRARY BASEMENT - MOMENTS LATER
Byron stops beneath a long fresco of a Dionysian party,
filled with FAMOUS FACES - Da Vinci strumming a lyre, and Ben
Franklin double-fisting glasses of wine...
DAVIS (CONTD)
(surprised)
Thats Ben Franklin.
BYRON
One of the last members of the Cult
of Daedalus. Ptolemy, Archimedes,
Da Vinci, Elizabeth the First, and Byron points out an image of a NYMPH, bathing in a fountain.
BYRON (CONTD)
Everyone, meet Olympia. According
to Alexs research...
Byron puts his hands right over the nymphs buttocks, and
PUSHES. Cracks appear in the fresco, opening a HIDDEN DOOR.
INT. TUNNELS - LIBRARY BASEMENT - CONTINUOUS
Byron pulls a torch from its sconce, lights it. The tunnels
lead towards different directions - practically a maze.
BYRON
These tunnels were built and used
by the Cult. They had many enemies.
Following Byron, they pass an ancient WEAPONS RACK. Kyra
stops - she finds a JAVELIN and HUNTING KNIFE. She grins.
They reach a set of STONE PILLARS and ARCHES at an
intersection. Above them, a KEYSTONE painted with grapes.
BYRON (CONTD)
Theatres above us. Kyra?
Kyras BOOSTED by Byron and Davis, PUSHES UP the flagstone.
EXT. THEATRE OF DIONYSUS - ACROPOLIS - MOMENTS LATER
Our heroes emerge from the floor, find themselves backstage
in the Theatre of Dionysus, an open air AMPHITHEATER.
Over the POP of musket fire, and the occasional BOOM of
artillery, Davis spots three Ottomans guarding powder kegs.
50.
In the other direction - a dozen Ottomans FIRE cannons and
muskets at rebels hidden in the trees that ring the theater.
DAVIS
(whispered)
Follow me. Those guards go first.
Davis heads off with Kyra, but both stop when they notice a
hesitant Byron, frozen with fear.
DAVIS (CONTD)
Fear kills you faster than bravery.
Byron nods, heartened by the advice, then falls in behind
Davis as they creep over to the three Ottoman Guards.
Davis points out LOOSE BRICKS in the stonework above them Kyra and Byron see the plan right away.
Kyra CLIMBS to the loose bricks, nods to the others.
As Davis covers them with his pistols, Byron steps out, and
surprises the Guards with BYRON
Pardon me, my good fellows.
The Ottomans WHIP around, shocked...then, confused.
BYRON (CONTD)
Who of you has the thickest skull?
Kyra STABS her javelin into the loose stonework, causing it
to break and CRASH DOWN on the heads of the Ottoman Guards.
Two COLLAPSE from the impact. The third Guard, however, still
stands, though very dazed from the knock to the head.
BYRON (CONTD)
(draws his pe)
Looks like youre our winner.
Byron KNOCKS the Guards head with the pes hilt.
BYRON (CONTD)
Another point for Cambridge.
Kyra rejoins Byron and Davis, and they continue forward past
the rubble, towards the LINE OF OTTOMAN CANNONS.
Once theyre close enough to attack...
DAVIS
Ready? On three. One, two -
51.
Kyra LEAPS into action, STABS one Ottoman with her javelin.
Or, now!
DAVIS (CONTD)
52.
SIMON
(singing)
Contre nous de la tyrannie,
Lentendard sanglant est leve...
BANG! He kills a running Ottoman with a perfectly led shot.
Rotates the barrel, picks out another, flint back and BANG!
EXT. PLAZA - ACROPOLIS - CONTINUOUS
Past the artillery line, our heroes crouch in the shadows of
the Plazas courtyard, in view of the ten foot statue of HEPHAESTUS. It stands in a row of statues of the Greek gods.
BYRON
Hephaestus. We need to take off his
head, get back to safety before any
of the hundred soldiers kill us.
Its a tall order. Byron looks to the party - any ideas?
DAVIS
(draws his Colliers)
I say we just blast our way to it.
KYRA
You have better guns than ideas.
Davis considers, and gives Kyra his pistols.
DAVIS
Then, how about this?
Davis finds a large lump of RUBBLE, hefts it to his chest.
DAVIS (CONTD)
(to Kyra)
Try not to shoot me in the ass.
Davis turns into the open, as Kyra levels the pistols and BLASTS with both guns at the Ottomans, who RUN FOR COVER!
Davis STEPS, faster, faster, builds to a RUN, and once he has
the momentum, HURLS the rubble into Hephaestus knee...
BOOM! The statues knee CRACKS, and the rest of the statue
tumbles! The HEAD snaps off and ROLLS right to Byron!
Byron quickly stuffs the head into his satchel, as a -
53.
CHORUS OF MUSKET SHOTS RINGS OUT. Davis sprints back to cover
in a serpentine pattern, dodging the enemy rounds.
DAVIS (CONTD)
GO! GO, GODDAMMIT!
Kyra tosses Davis a pistol - he catches it running, turns and
SHOOTS an Ottoman charging at him with a sword...
EXT. TUNNEL - LIBRARY OF ATHENS - CONTINUOUS
The party DROPS into the tunnel, narrowly evading enemy fire.
But, not for long - SHOUTS above, and closing in. Our heroes
SPRINT away, as the Ottomans drop into the tunnel.
DAVIS
Hurry, back to the library!
Kyra runs ahead, as Byron and Davis keep up...
NEXT TUNNEL
Kyra turns the corner, runs right into SIMON. He smiles, sets
down the POWDER KEG he brought along with him.
SIMON
I saw them follow you in.
(pats the keg)
This should slow them down.
Simon STABS holes into it, allowing powder to pour out, then
ROLLS it into the tunnel towards Davis and Byron.
SIMON (CONTD)
Light it up, Davis!
Seeing the rolling keg, Davis aims his Collier at the black
powder trail as he passes, and FIRES to SPARK the flint...
The powder CATCHES! The ignited trail CHASES the BARREL, and
just as Davis and Byron turn the corner BOOOOOOM! The tunnel CRASHES DOWN on the Ottoman soldiers.
BYRON
They really ought to wear helmets.
SHOUTS from another set of tunnels. More Ottomans coming...
DAVIS
Ah, hell, they found a way around!
54.
SIMON
We have to get to the library! We
can barricade them there!
Byron takes out Alexs journal, and quickly flips through it.
His eyes light up when he finds the correct page.
BYRON
No. Follow me!
Byron leads Davis, Simon and Kyra through the maze of halls following GREEK ICONS in each tunnel - ancient markers.
As the Ottoman shouts grow louder, Byron suddenly stops in
the middle of a hall to examine the floor.
Here!
BYRON (CONTD)
55.
DAVIS
Hey, no refunds, Byron!
(to Simon)
Get in here, or Ill pull you in!
Simon chuckles, then grabs the corners of the slab.
SIMON
Ill see you all in a free Greece!
He SLAMS the slab home, then stands to FIRE at the Ottomans.
INT. STRANGE METAL ROOM - CONTINUOUS
Davis POUNDS on the hatch above him, but it wont budge.
DAVIS
He locked us in! Goddammit, Simon!
Quiet!
KYRA
DAVIS
Dont! The one guy I trust gets a
romantic notion about revolution,
and dumps me with a peasant and an
Englishman in a goddamn sewer!
BYRON
(insulted)
Alex died for this revolution. What
have you done for anybody?
DAVIS
I saved your windbag ass!
KYRA
Both of you shut up! At least long
enough to figure out where we are!
Byron, what is this place?
Byron grins haughtily - he leads the way, as they explore the
dark metal corridors with bronze hatches.
At the end of one corridor - a spherical CHAMBER with a
BRONZE HELM, positioned above a PANEL of dials and levers.
In front of the helm, at the far end of the chamber - a
WINDOW that looks out into DARKNESS.
DAVIS
Are we on some sort of ship?
56.
Kyra finds two unlit torches perched in sconces just inside
the glass window. She strikes flint to steel, lights them.
The flames act as HEADLIGHTS, illuminating a MAN MADE CAVE
with an underwater STREAM, just beyond the glass.
They also light up the CONTROL CHAMBER.
BYRON
Not just any ship. An underwater
ship, designed by Daedalus, and
hidden here by the Cult if the need
for a hasty escape should arise.
As they explore, all three are taken by a CLOCKWORK MAP of
Greece and its surrounding bodies of WATER.
Kyra, impressed with the maps intricate layout, points to a
small GEAR positioned along the shores that feed Arcadia.
KYRA
Thats Arcadia.
Curious, Davis touches the gear. The map COMES TO LIFE, its
clockwork CLICKS and SHIFTS beneath the geographical markers.
A CLUNK sounds in the room. A tense beat, and then DAVIS
Its alright. I dont think that
did anything...
The vessel SHUDDERS and SHAKES - knocks them to their knees!
KYRA
I think that did everything!
Davis looks out of the glass windows, realizes theyre now SLIDING THROUGH THE CAVE, TO A SLOWLY OPENING STONE DOOR!
DAVIS
Everyone, hold fast!
INT. UNDERGROUND CANAL - CONTINUOUS
We see our heroes through the glass, HOLDING FAST as the ship
ROCKETS through the huge subterranean tunnel...
EXT. SEA CLIFFS - CONTINUOUS
A STONE DOOR, hidden high up in the cliffs, opens fully -
57.
A WHALE-SHAPED BRONZE SUBMARINE flushes out, and NOSE-DIVES
towards the waters below!
INT. DAEDALUS SUBMARINE (MOVING) - CONTINUOUS
As the submarine FREE FALLS - gravity loses its power. Our
heroes SCREAM and CLING to whatever they can, until EXT. SURFACE OF THE SEA - CONTINUOUS
WHAM! The submarine SPLASHES into the water, causing INT. DAEDALUS SUBMARINE - CONTINUOUS
- everyone to SLAM into a pile at the back of the chamber.
Underwater, the pneumatic system boots on, sending the
knobs and dials into action.
The party straggles up - dazed, but alive. Davis grips the
helm, but Byron - now looking at the moving map - interrupts.
BYRON
Stop! Were already on course.
Amazed, Davis, Byron and Kyra collectively GAZE through the
window of the self-piloting submarine, into the sea...
UNDERWATER - CONTINUOUS
The DAEDALUS SUBMARINE, in all its glory: a great, mechanical
WHALE powered with side-to-side thrashes from its layerplated tail, and steered by its rudder-like fins.
I./E. DAEDALUS SUBMARINE (MOVING) - CONTINUOUS
They take in the strange, underwater world through the glass.
Look up.
DAVIS
58.
BYRON
(slides away)
Speaking of which...
KYRA
(to Davis)
Since when do you care whether or
not Greece wins this war?
Before Davis can answer, a BANG behind him. They turn, find
Byron SLAMMING the marble head against a metal bulkhead.
BANG! BANG! BANG! Byron is a man possessed. Finally, a CRACK! as Byron SLAMS the head down. It splits to reveal The Chalice STEM and BASE.
BYRON
Now, lets see if Alex was
right...if I remember correctly...
Byron blows the dust off, CONNECTS the stem and base to the
Chalice bowl. All watch in wonder, as The pieces LOCK into place. HIDDEN GEARS in the bowl UNWIND,
turning the Chalice around its base.
Byron LIGHTS a match, holds it beneath the base of the cup.
A HOLOGRAPHIC PROJECTION OF A GIANT WHITE BULL emits into the
air above the Chalice, as the match light filters though a
hidden lens in the stem, and through the glass cells.
The BULL runs in a circle through the air. Byron raises his
arm into the projection, and the BULL RUNS RIGHT THROUGH!
DAVIS
If thats the key, whats the lock?
BYRON
Im eager to find out.
LATER THAT NIGHT
Davis watches the BOLT that represents their submarine move
along tiny bronze rails towards Arcadia. Primitive GPS.
Kyra approaches Davis - passing Byron, asleep in a cabin.
DAVIS
You should be asleep.
59.
KYRA
Cant. Tried. Have you had many
adventures like this?
DAVIS
Not like this. Yourself?
KYRA
If you gave me the choice, Id
still be home.
(beat)
Wheres home for you?
DAVIS
You know where New Jersey is?
Kyra shakes her head - no idea.
DAVIS (CONTD)
Its a real dump now, but I hope
itll be a nice place. Someday.
Kyra flashes a small smile.
KYRA
Is your family still there?
DAVIS
My mother, maybe. Pop died fighting
the second war against the British.
But, he was nice enough to leave me
this coat. See this hole?
Davis puts his thumb through a hole in his breast pocket.
DAVIS (CONTD)
Shot that killed him. Took him over
a week to die. I was fourteen.
KYRA
Im sorry. I dont know what Id do
if my father died.
Davis remembers - her father is dead.
DAVIS
His death showed me theres no
cause worth dying for. This coat
reminds me of that.
Kyra thinks on that, then shows Davis her necklace.
60.
KYRA
Before he left, my father gave me
this. Our only heirloom. Its good
silver, but, its more than money.
DAVIS
Kyra...what if your father isnt in
Arcadia? What will you do then?
Kyra is about to answer, but their talk is interrupted by Byron, holding a bottle of wine, stumbling between them.
BYRON
The bright sun was extinguish'd,
and the stars / Did wander darkling
in the eternal, uhh...
(beat)
Theres wine in the galley. A bit
pulpy, but it seems to be working.
Byron smacks his lips, and FALLS down on his ass. Kyra takes
the bottle from Byron, and helps him up.
KYRA
Cmon, lets get you back to bed.
Davis grabs the bottle of wine as Kyra takes Byron away.
DAVIS
(mimics Byron)
The bright sun was so big, and the
stars were drunk like pelicans...
(beat)
Ugh. English poetry.
(thinks a beat)
The hell with you, Simon.
Davis CHUGS from the bottle.
CABIN - DAEDALUS SUBMARINE - MORNING
Byrons eyes flutter open. He stands on wobbly feet, slings
the leather satchel over his shoulder, makes his way to the CONTROL CHAMBER
Byron finds Davis ASLEEP on the floor, with a few empty wine
bottles ROLLING AROUND next to him.
Byron checks the clockwork map - closer than ever to Arcadia.
BYRON
Nearly there, Alex.
61.
With a smile, Byron looks to the window, and DEFLATES becauseTHERES A SUNKEN SHIP BLOCKING THEIR PATH!
Byron SLAPS Davis awake, who instinctively DECKS Byron.
OW! Davis!
BYRON (CONTD)
Holding his jaw, Byron points out the sunken ship in their
path. Davis eyes saucer. Kyra appears, sleepy eyed.
KYRA
What are you two arguing about now?
DAVIS
Grab hold of anything! Were gonna EXT. SUNKEN SHIP / DAEDALUS SUBMARINE - CONTINUOUS
SCREECH! as the bow of the sunken ship guts the subs hull!
INT. DAEDALUS SUBMARINE - CONTINUOUS
They scramble for the opening, as a torrent of WATER SURGES
into the vessel, KNOCKING Byrons satchel off his shoulder!
Kyra swims out first. Davis wades toward Byron, whos
frantically searching the rising water for the satchel.
DAVIS
Forget that damn cup!
Byron ignores Davis and DIVES down. Davis reaches for Byron,
but the water pressure SUCKS him out to sea...
EXT. SHORES OF ARCADIA - DAY
Davis and Kyra swim to shore, where they collapse, exhausted.
INT. DAEDALUS SUBMARINE - CONTINUOUS
Byron paddles through the flooded vessel, until he finds the
SATCHEL hanging off of the submerged helm.
He reaches for it - nearly grabs it - but as the GLASS PANES
BREAK, Byron is PULLED DEEPER into the ocean...
62.
EXT. SHORES OF ARCADIA - CONTINUOUS
Kyra and Davis search the surface for signs of Byron, find
none. Anxiety turns to realization, and slowly, mourning.
KYRA
For nothing...all, for nothing.
Davis wraps an arm around Kyras shoulders to comfort her.
She burrows into his embrace.
A hand POPS UP in the water - holding the Chalice!
The rest of Byron surfaces. He swims to shore, satchel in
hand. Kyra CHEERS - even Davis has to smile.
BYRON
Capt. Davis, if I didnt know you,
Id say youre happy to see me.
Davis takes the Chalice from his hands, but keeps his smile.
DAVIS
Im happy to see this.
Byron laughs, then points past them at MT. LYCAON, a rounded
peak that towers above the range of hills holding it.
BYRON
Mt. Lycaon. Welcome to Arcadia!
Byron adjusts his britches - removes a handful of seaweed.
EXT. TREELINE - ARCADIAN PLAINS - DAY
Mahmet and Takis, the only surviving members of the party,
stare into the ominous woods from the safety of the plains.
TAKIS
(spooked)
Whatevers in the woods, itll come
for us again if we return.
MAHMET
Next time well have real soldiers
with us. My soldiers.
TAKIS
Theyre forty miles away. At this
rate, well kill the horses.
Mahmet sneers, SPURS his horse forward. Takis follows...
63.
EXT. OTTOMAN ARMY ENCAMPMENT - DAY
An impressive camp of one thousand Ottoman Soldiers. Tents,
wagons, cannons, ready for war.
The Soldiers spot Mahmet, leading Takis through the camp.
SHOUTS in the ranks, as the men SWARM their returning leader.
Mahmet greets them with salutes and handshakes, filled with a
warmth we havent seen from him up to this point.
These men are his brothers, and Mahmets back in his natural
place as their leader.
INT. COMMAND TENT - OTTOMAN ARMY ENCAMPMENT - CONTINUOUS
Mahmet and Takis enter, and approach the ACTING COMMANDER.
ACTING COMMANDER
Captain Mahmet, youve returned!
Still in time to march on Athens.
MAHMET
Not yet to Athens. I need the men
to finish my current task. Be
prepared to march within the hour.
EXT. BASE OF MT. LYCAON - ARCADIAN MOUNTAINS - LATE AFTERNOON
Kyra scans the hills for signs of civilization. Meanwhile,
out of her earshot, Byron and Davis whisper to each other.
DAVIS
Tell her now, or she may never know
for certain.
BYRON
Shell figure it out, eventually...
DAVIS
I will drown you, if you dont Kyra spots a small TOWN, south of the mountain.
Hey!
KYRA
64.
Kyra turns to leave, just like that, but BYRON
Kyra, wait! About your father...
Kyra steps back, her affection replaced by distrust.
BYRON (CONTD)
He...died at Peta. I saw his body
there. I saw his birthmark.
(beat)
Im so sorry, Kyra.
She staggers back, as the world blurs around her...
KYRA
Both of you have been lying to me?!
BYRON
Not lying. Withholding.
KYRA
Youre wrong! I know hes alive!
Kyra sprints off, leaving them there, ashamed.
BYRON
That went well.
Davis PUNCHES Byron, who crumples to the ground.
BYRON (CONTD)
I deserved every knuckle of that.
Davis sighs - he holds his hand out, and helps Byron back up.
EXT. ARCADIAN VILLAGE - DAY
A village forgotten by time, scarcely populated with
ARCADIANS. Oddly, all are younger than 14, or older than 50.
Kyra CHARGES down the villages main street. WOLF IMAGERY
everywhere - signs, carvings, wall frescoes.
KYRA
Felix! Im looking for Felix!
Kyra is met with blank stares and averted gazes, except An INJURED MAN, 20s, massive frame, standing at the entrance
to the town TAVERN. Hes the only young adult around.
65.
Kyra notices his heavily bandaged right arm, and the fact
that its soaked through with blood - a recent wound.
The Injured Man nods to Kyra, and beckons her over.
KYRA (CONTD)
Do you know a man named Felix?
The Injured Man gently reaches for the silver necklace in
Kyras tunic. She GRABS his hand, turns his wrist, and holds
her KNIFE to his veins.
INJURED MAN
Easy, easy...I just want to see it.
Kyra diffuses, shows the necklace. RECOGNITION in his eyes.
EXT. JAGGED PATH - MT. LYCAON SLOPES - DAY
Byron leads Davis up a path marked by ancient rubble.
BYRON
Were nearly to the vault. I think.
DAVIS
You dont know where it is?
BYRON
Of course I do! Its on
this...mountain.
Davis looks around - its a big mountain. His eyes glimpse MOVEMENT in a PATCH OF WOODS. Davis WHIPS his pistols out...
BYRON (CONTD)
(noticing)
What? What is it?
Davis scans the trees, spots nothing. Holsters his pistols.
DAVIS
Nothing. Just find the damn vault.
EXT. WOODED PATCH - MT. LYCAON SLOPES - CONTINUOUS
What Davis saw was a PACK OF WOLVES, crouched in the trees.
But, these are no wolves, theyre the LYCOPOLITES - male and female warriors clad head-to-toe in
wolf pelts. Theyre armed with spears, bows and swords.
66.
Now, we realize - it was the Lycopolites that attacked Mahmet
in the woods.
Their leader, NIKITA, 30, athletic, tough, signals her
Warriors to stalk Byron and Davis farther up the mountain.
INT. TAVERN - ARCADIAN VILLAGE - DAY
Kyras led through the empty TAVERN to a back room. The
Injured Man holds open the door for her, where she finds FELIX, his bare chest wrapped with bandages. He smiles.
FELIX
My sweet Kyra...
She RUNS into his arms - he WINCES, but hugs her back.
KYRA
I knew youd be alive!
FELIX
I made it, but it wasnt easy...
EXT. FIELDS OUTSIDE THE CITY OF PETA - FLASHBACK - DAY
Felix WAKES up from the battle - he sees Byron, Alex and
Takis in the distance, already departing.
Felix holds his injured side as he pushes himself up. He
spots a HORSE, saddled and bridled, walking around the dead.
BACK TO SCENE:
Felix serves water to Kyra from a pitcher.
FELIX
Worse than a sword in the gut, was
the ride home. But, I knew youd
make it. How was your journey?
Kyra can only laugh - too much to tell. Her laughter fades as
she notices a SUN BLEACHED WOLF SKULL on a table.
KYRA
Your hometown seems friendly.
Felix SIGHS - the moment for explanation is finally here.
FELIX
I lived here all my life, before
moving to Epirus with your mother.
67.
KYRA
Whyd you leave?
FELIX
It was a fight, Ill tell you. Our
family has a legacy in this town. I
was meant to stay, forever.
Kyra cocks her head, confused.
FELIX (CONTD)
It might be better for you not to
know. Like your mother wanted.
(beat)
But, shes gone, and its your
decision now.
His tone makes Kyra pause - theres a warning in his voice.
Tell me.
KYRA
Felix points out an OIL PAINTING on the wall, which depicts ZEUS CASTING LIGHTNING AT LYCAON AND HIS SONS. The painting
COMES TO LIFE as Lycaon and Sons TRANSFORM into WEREWOLVES.
FELIX (V.O)
You remember, when Zeus cursed
Lycaon and his Sons...
As the Werewolves flee, we stay with Zeus, as he holds his hands out - the steam from every bowl
GATHERS into the form of a young man. Then, in a FLASH NYKTIMUS, 22, REAPPEARS.
FELIX (V.O.) (CONTD)
Zeus resurrected Nyktimus, the son
Lycaon served to Zeus. Nyktimus
took the crown as King of Arcadia.
EXT. ARCADIAN VILLAGE - ANCIENT GREECE - NIGHT
In the darkness, Villagers run and scream in terror - QUICK
SHOTS of the Werewolves - obscured bloodshed and horror...
FELIX (V.O.)
But Lycaons reign of terror didnt
end at his transformation. Rather,
he enjoyed his new form.
68.
EXT. PEAK OF MT. LYCAON - ANCIENT GREECE - NIGHT
Nyktimus kneels before a BURNING ALTAR, hands to the sky.
FELIX (V.O.)
So, Nyktimus asked Zeus for a
weapon to slay the great beast.
ENERGY gathers above the burning altar, GROWS, then FLASHES
OUT into a glowing SILVER-TIPPED SPEAR.
FELIX (V.O.)
Zeus gave him a spear, crafted by
the gods, that could kill Lycaon.
But, Nyktimus was not to slay his
father, but lock him in the vault
to live with an eternal hunger. A
punishment far worse than death.
Nyktimus reaches into the flames of the burning altar to take
the spear, as LIGHTNING FLASHES.
FELIX (V.O.)
With the weapon, came a warning. If
the beasts were to ever escape,
Zeus would burn the world.
EXT. WOODS OUTSIDE THE KINGDOM WALLS - ANCIENT GREECE - NIGHT
A line of TORCHES cuts through the dark and ominous woods.
FELIX (V.O.)
Nyktimus led his people in a hunt
to capture his father and brothers.
Nyktimus, clutching the spear, leads a HUGE MOB in chase of LYCAON AND SONS, DRIVING them in the direction of Mt. Lycaon.
EXT. VAULT DOOR - MT. LYCAON - ANCIENT GREECE - NIGHT
The CHALICE sits in a GROOVE outside the VAULT DOOR - one of
hundreds of similar GROOVES cut into the stone.
Nyktimus and the Mob DRIVE Lycaon and Sons toward the open
Vault Door, prodding at them with spears and swords.
Beyond the door, we glimpse a ceiling studded by SPEARS that
point down, and an OBELISK near the entrance.
Once the Werewolves are forced in, Nyktimus and the Mob
members POOL THEIR STRENGTH to shut the massive Vault Door.
69.
Just before the door closes, Lycaons snout SNAPS OUT at
Nyktimus arm, and sinks its teeth into his flesh.
FELIX (V.O.)
But, while trapping the wolves
inside, Nyktimus received a bite...
Nyktimus reels with pain, as the Mob SEALS THE DOOR. The bite
SEARS into Nyktimus arm, the same location of Felixs mark.
FELIX (V.O.)
Now, a reminder of our familys
eternal task.
BACK TO SCENE:
Kyra turns her attention from the painting - now back to oil,
canvas and wood - to the birthmark on her fathers arm.
FELIX
Nyktimus, our direct ancestor, then
formed the Lycopolites to protect
the vault.
KYRA
(realizing)
Were the guardians against the
wolves...has Lycaon ever escaped?
FELIX
No. But, people still try to open
it for the treasure, unaware of
what else is inside. So, we dont
let anyone close enough to try.
KYRA
You actually believe this?
Felixs complete lack of reaction is everything Kyra needs to
realize - he believes it, absolutely. And now, so does she.
KYRA (CONTD)
So, what, do you scare people off?
FELIX
No...thats a very temporary
solution, weve learned. We have to
take more permanent measures.
Kyras jaw drops, horrified. Felix sighs.
FELIX (CONTD)
Now, you know why your mother
didnt want this life for you.
70.
Felix winces in pain, as he settles into a chair.
KYRA
Where are the Lycopolites now?
FELIX
At the mountain, taking care of the
latest threat. Two foreigners.
Kyra bolts up, rushes to the door. Felix stands, startled.
FELIX (CONTD)
Where are you going?!
KYRA
To save my friends!
EXT. JAGGED STEPS - MT. LYCAON SLOPES - DAY
Close to the peak, Byron and Davis find their path blocked by
thick vines over a rock face.
Curious, Byron draws his pe and STABS THROUGH the vines. A
look back to Davis, grins - this is it.
Davis pulls his sword and together they hack away the vines.
EXT. WOODED PATCH - MT. LYCAON SLOPES
- CONTINUOUS
71.
A loud GRUMBLING, before the groove SPITS OUT the Chalice.
Luckily, Byron catches the Chalice before it can break.
BYRON (CONTD)
(to Mountain)
Rude!
(to Davis)
I half expected a trap...
Davis TACKLES Byron, as ZIP! Spears FLY from other grooves
all around them! Davis YELLS IN PAIN, clutches his EAR as The spears DISAPPEAR into the grooves, as if the trap never
sprung in the first place.
DAVIS
Damnmit, Byron! Did you want to
mention it might be a trap first?
Byron would answer - but on his back, looking up at the
groove pattern, he FINALLY SEES THE PUZZLE FOR WHAT IT IS...
BYRON
The grooves...its a map of the
constellations!
Byron gets up, pushes past Davis. He chooses a groove...
BYRON (CONTD)
The bull in the Chalice is Taurus!
And, Taurus is right over there...
Byron points out the groove in the Taurus Constellation.
Before Byron can do it right, an ARROW hits the groove.
BYRON (CONTD)
(to Mountain)
Are you serious? I havent even put
the bloody cup in there yet!
DAVIS
That wasnt a trap...
Davis and Byron draw their weapons, and wheel around to find
Nikita and a dozen Lycopolites storming the chamber!
DAVIS (CONTD)
Friends of yours?
BYRON
If they aim to kill us, maybe.
Davis lowers his hands to his pistols, as the Lycopolites
flood into the chamber, ready for battle.
72.
Just as the tension is set to erupt in violence Stop!
KYRA (O.S.)
73.
Enraged, Felix turns to the origin of the gunshot, and finds A PLATOON OF OTTOMANS, sixty strong - led by Takis and Mahmet
- marching its way up the mountain.
Takis enters the vault chamber, followed by Mahmet, who has
one dragoon aimed at Davis, and the other aimed at Felix.
MAHMET
(re: Lycopolites)
Heres your beasts, Takis. Just
rebels in pelts.
(to all)
Drop your weapons.
The Lycopolites and Davis disarm, as Takis approaches Byron.
BYRON
Didnt we make you shark chum?
TAKIS
Pity were so far from the sea, Id
return the favor.
Takis SNAGS the Chalice from Byrons hands.
TAKIS (CONTD)
Now, tell me how to use this key,
or your deaths will be painful.
KYRA
You open that door, were all dead.
FELIX
Theres an evil in there, one
thatll destroy all of Greece.
TAKIS
(laughs)
Save your scary stories. Now, open
the door, Lord Byron.
BYRON
Only Alex knew how.
TAKIS
Ill figure it out myself.
(to Mahmet, re: Byron)
Take off his head.
Mahmet draws his kilij...
BYRON
Wait. Wait! Now, I remember!
74.
Byron takes back the Chalice, heads for the Taurus groove.
FELIX
Dont do it. Its better for all of
us to die here, right now.
Byron QUAKES with fear, still unsure what to do.
DAVIS
Hell, its just a damn door.
Davis steals the Chalice from Byrons hands, then sets it in
the Taurus groove.
The Chalice TURNS on its base, ACTIVATED.
No!
KYRA
75.
INT. VAULT ENTRYWAY - MT. LYCAON - CONTINUOUS
Felix and Davis lead the way through the darkness, spear and
revolvers at ready. Byron wedges between them.
BYRON
Do you really know how to get past
all the Daedalus traps?
FELIX
Nobody has been in here for nearly
five thousand years.
So...no?
BYRON
76.
KYRA
This vault not only holds Lycaons
treasure, it holds Lycaon himself.
And, forty-nine of his sons.
BYRON
Oh, I know the story! Zeus turned
Lycaon, and all his naughty boys,
into wolves. Silliest part of the
myth, Id say.
Byron chuckles - but, nobody else does. Byron shudders.
Felix points to Kyras neckline.
FELIX
Give me the necklace.
Kyra hands him the necklace. Felix removes the leather cord.
He arranges the silver bits, SLIDES them into place like a
puzzle. When hes done - THE SILVER SPEARHEAD OF NYKTIMUS.
FELIX (CONTD)
This spearhead is the only weapon
capable of slaying Lycaon.
KYRA
Why did you leave Arcadia with it?
FELIX
Because I thought that maybe, one
day, I might give it to you.
Felix fixes the silver head on his spear.
A Lycopolite, getting a better look at the odd ceiling,
accidently STEPS on a TILE - KRAK-KARONG!
The tile, powered by a hidden spring, LAUNCHES THE MAN UP. He
flies into the CEILING SPEARS - IMPALED!
HORROR as the body FALLS - the tile retracts into the floor.
Nikita stares, jaw working in reflex - clearly, a friend.
BYRON
Id rather go get shot. Goodbye.
Byron turns to leave, but Davis GRABS him back.
DAVIS
Byron, look!
Davis directs Byrons eyes to the NEAR OBELISK, which has -
77.
FOUR BLOCKS that rotate around the center. Each block
features a carving - MAN, WOMAN, HORSE, and BIRD.
DAVIS (CONTD)
Can you make sense of it?
Byron looks back to paintings on the tiled floor...
BYRON
The floor is the River Styx. Or,
the River of Death if those hard
Greek consonants give you trouble.
But, nothing to ferry us across...
Byron searches the room, until his eyes land on the FAR
OBELISK, where an OAR sticks in the top.
The face of the obelisk has a MAN carved into it. A clue...
Byron continues his search, finds STONE CARVINGS on the walls
around the near obelisk, of a BIRD, HORSE and GOAT.
BYRON (CONTD)
(re: near obelisk)
Bird, horse, goat, man...
(re: walls / far obelisk)
Woman, horse, bird, man...
Then, Byron SMILES - epiphany! He turns the near obelisk
blocks to match Woman/Bird, Horse/Bird, Bird/Horse, Man/Goat.
The FAR OBELISK OPENS, revealing a SPEAR attached to a CHAIN,
aimed their way. The spear FIRES across the room NICKS Davis other ear, then LODGES in the NEAR OBELISK,
fixing itself taut above the deadly checkerboard floor.
Davis, again, with a fresh trickle of blood from his ear.
DAVIS
(pissed, to Byron)
Did you know that would happen?
BYRON
Not specifically that, no.
(helpfully)
At least, your ears match now!
That is not comforting to Davis, with two bloody ears.
KYRA
Howd you know the answer?
78.
BYRON
Well, the man and goat makes the
satyr, horse and bird, Pegasus, and
so on. In a way, its a rather
literal combination lock.
FELIX
Impressive. Whos crossing first?
BYRON
Oh, I think I did my part.
Nikita swings her legs up and over the chain that now
connects the obelisks, pulls herself forward with a fury.
BYRON (CONTD)
(to Davis)
Ill bet you theres a lever.
FAR OBELISK - Nikita finds a LEVER.
NIKITA
Theres a lever!
Byron mock-bows to Davis, who rolls his eyes.
BYRON
Pull said lever!
Byron kneels, and TAPS the closest tile with his sword.
When nothing happens, he grins, then STROLLS his way across.
The others follow behind.
DAVIS
Will the rest be like that?
BYRON
Reason dictates...watch your ass.
On the far side, a GREAT DOOR. Byron PULLS THE HANDLES A horrible, deep GROWL interrupts his action.
Amidst the growling, the sound of giant claws SCRATCHING...
Felix and Kyra exchange a worried glance. The Lycopolites
ready their weapons, and Davis draws his Colliers.
The growling disappears as quickly as it began - replaced by
the sound of Byron HYPERVENTILATING.
Felix holds up the silver spear to him, reassuringly.
79.
BYRON (CONTD)
May I carry the spear?
Felix shows Byron his bite-shaped birthmark.
FELIX
Its useless in your hands. Only
those with the mark can wield it.
Felix opens the door - leads them in, spear first.
INT. FEASTING HALL - CONTINUOUS
They enter a FEASTING HALL, covered in dust and cobwebs.
Ancient weapons, armor, and decorative shields adorn the
walls, lit by the bronze fire-pipes.
Several HALLS lead off to their left and right.
Above the party - a BALCONY, the second floor. Then, the
third, fourth and fifth floors - this place is IMMENSE.
NIKITA
The Great Hall. Lycaon himself
would have eaten here.
BYRON
Then, the way to the treasure would
be through the king...behind the
throne. Thats our path!
KYRA
Papa, look...
Kyra points to GIANT CLAW MARKS on the walls. She measures
her hand to one, finds its width three times her own.
FELIX
Dont be afraid. Whatever happens BOOM! A WEREWOLF lands on a nearby stone table with a GROWL!
Seven feet tall, covered in thick grey fur, with claws like
daggers and a full foot and a half of slobbering jaws...
The Werewolf GRABS an unlucky Lycopolite, CLAWS HIM IN HALF!
BANG-BANG-BANG-BANG!
Davis UNLOADS his pistols into the wolf, as the Lycopolites
loose arrows, and stab with their spears.
80.
Kyra STICKS it in the chest, brings the beast to its knees.
It HOWLS in pain, until Nikita CHOPS its head off.
The head rolls from the body, as the beast returns to its
human form - a YOUNG GREEK MAN, from many centuries ago.
DAVIS
At least the kings sons can die by
ordinary weapons.
In response, the sound of many beasts HOWLING back at their
injured brother, emanating from the BALCONIES above.
Instinctively, the heroes circle up until the howling ends.
KYRA
Only forty-eight to go.
FELIX
Forty-nine. Dont forget the king.
DAVIS
(looking around)
Wheres Byron?
Down here.
BYRON (O.S.)
81.
DAVIS (CONTD)
Is this the treasure room?
BYRON
No. I think were in Lycaons
private art gallery.
Nikita cant find any of the claw marks seen elsewhere.
NIKITA
The wolves dont come in here.
Everythings preserved...
Davis spots GEMSTONES in a glass case. His eyes saucer.
BYRON
I assume these beasts lost any
interest in fine living.
KYRA
(wary)
Or, they fear this room.
DAVIS
Well get rich from all this!
Davis lifts the glass case lid, takes a handful of gemstones they SPARKLE in the gaslight. He pockets the stones.
But then, in the reflection of the glass case, Davis sees the
STATUE OF POSEIDON TURN ITS HEAD TOWARDS HIM.
Davis SPINS towards the statue, but sees no further movement.
BYRON
Admiring Poseidon? You ought to,
Davis, he was lord of the ocean.
DAVIS
I could swear that statue just CRRRAAACK! Poseidon COMES to life, as the marble CRUMBLES
around moving joints, to reveal A BRONZE SYSTEM OF GEARS, WIRES AND STRUTS below the marble.
WHAM! Poseidon SHOVES Davis backwards with his trident.
BYRON
AUTOMATONS!
The other gods come to life - the marble at their ankles,
knees and elbows SHATTERS, falls as dust.
82.
The Automatons ATTACK!
Each fights with its signature weapon - Apollo has a bow,
Ares has a spear, Hepheastus a hammer, and so forth.
The Lycopolites HACK and STAB, but the metal and marble of
the statues prevent all melee damage.
Davis SHOOTS Ares with his Colliers, but the shots only break
off bits of stone. Ares lifts a sword over Davis head.
DAVIS
Byron! Think of something!
Davis yells, as he LEAPS out of the way at the last second.
But, Byrons a little busy, staring at Zeus - and his
lightning bolt shaped baton, CRACKLING with electricity.
Zeus ZAPS Byron, sends him FLYING across the room, KNOCKING a
tapestry off the wall and over his head.
Byron emerges from under the tapestry with FRIZZY HAIR.
BYRON
Daedalus, you continue to amaze.
The Lycopolites defend themselves from the Automatons the
best they can, but two more are overwhelmed, then CRUSHED.
Felix and Kyra fight back-to-back, parrying attacks with
their spears, as Davis assaults with his Colliers and sword.
Kyra DRIVES her spear into Artemis knee, causing the statue
to PULL her bow and FIRE it straight into Apollos eye.
Apollo stumbles, as SPARKS fly from the arrow.
Artemis SWIPES at Kyra with her bow, but Kyra ducks and
SMASHES Artemis other knee.
The knee BENDS inward, and Felix DRIVES his spear into her
mechanical eye, destroying her.
FELIX
Take out their eyes!
Hearing that, Davis aims and SHOOTS both of Zeus eyes out
with his revolvers, just before Zeus can ZAP Kyra.
His head SPARKS, spins in place, then POPS OFF! Steam pours
out, as Zeus SHUTS DOWN.
Davis and Kyra exchange nods, then rush to help Byron.
83.
KYRA
Are you alright?
BYRON
(still dazed)
Id like tea. Id also like to run.
Davis turns, spots the remaining Automatons closing in...
DAVIS
Good idea. LETS GET OUTTA HERE!
Davis fires at the Automatons, pushing them back so the party
can ESCAPE through the next DOOR.
COURTYARD / BRONZE GARDEN
Felix BARS the door - built for defense. All turn to find An underground GARDEN: lush, green, the size of a Hippodrome.
Light from the GAS PIPES reveals walls painted to resemble a
Greek VISTA.
Byron steps onto a STONE PATH that cuts through a GRASSY
FIELD. The paths lined by olive trees, and leads to a VILLA.
BYRON
How can this be?
Davis takes the moment to reload. Kyra tries pulling up grass
- only gets green flakes, revealing the BRONZE beneath.
KYRA
The grass, the trees, theyre all
made of bronze. Painted over.
A BOOM behind them. An AUTOMATON ARM breaks through the door.
FELIX
Get to the Villa!
Everyone sprints across the bronze lawn, as the remaining
nine Automatons SMASH THROUGH the door in pursuit.
The party slows in fear, when they hear a MASSIVE ROAR...
From the balconies and windows of the Villa, a dozen
Werewolves LEAP down to the lawn and CHARGE our heroes!
KING LYCAON appears on the Villas roof. Hes three feet
taller than his Sons, with coarse black fur and YELLOW EYES.
84.
Lycaon...
FELIX (CONTD)
85.
BYRON
I fenced at University...
Byron ducks a swinging claw, then STABS into the Werewolf.
BYRON (CONTD)
...another point for Cambridge!
ON FELIX, as he fights Lycaon - neither can get an advantage.
Every attack by Lycaon is repelled by the spear.
Lycaon halts his attacks, when he recognizes Felixs mark.
FELIX
You remember this, dont you? Im
here to finish it!
From their blind side, Poseidon STICKS Lycaons side with a
trident! Lycaon HOWLS with rage, then rips the trident out!
Lycaon turns to battle Poseidon. Felix sees the trident
wounds HEAL OVER immediately.
Felix attempts to STAB Lycaon while hes distracted, but
WHAM! Hes tossed by the back end of the tridents staff.
When Felix falls back - a Werewolf LEAPS at him, but is SHOT
through the head by Davis!
Nikita, Kyra, Davis, and Byron rush to pull Felix up. They
each survey the bloody battlefield. Theyre all thats left.
As the Werewolves slowly gain the advantage over the
Automatons, Felix issues a command.
FELIX (CONTD)
Everyone to the Villa! NOW!
They all SPRINT toward the safety of the Villa...Felix last.
Two Werewolves spot the fleeing party, and PURSUE!
LYCAONS VILLA
Felix BURSTS through the threshold, straight into the aim of A PAIR OF GIANT ARROWS, mounted on SIEGE BALLISTAS already
manned by Kyra and Nikita.
Duck!
KYRA
86.
The huge bolts FLY OUT, kill the Werewolves on Felixs tail.
Kyra and Nikita CRANK the ballistas back for another shot...
Felix turns, watches the Werewolves destroy the last
Automaton, ripping its marble limbs away.
Then, the victorious Werewolves turn their attention to the
Villa, and our heroes staring them down from the doorway.
FELIX
We can funnel them in through here.
(levels his spear)
Stay behind me.
From across the bronze garden, Lycaon sights in on Felixs
spearhead, GLINTING in the light from the gas pipe flames.
Lycaon then turns towards the OPEN DOOR behind him, and the
possible FREEDOM from his eternal prison just beyond...
FELIX (CONTD)
(worried)
Lycaon knows the vault is open...
(shouts)
Come fight me, you bastards!
But, the choice is clear to Lycaon and Sons, who HOWL, then
BOUND OFF towards the door and the open world beyond.
FELIX (CONTD)
We have to stop them! They cant
leave this mountain!
Felix, Nikita rush out in pursuit. Kyra turns to Davis.
KYRA
Are you coming?
Davis turns, looks around for Byron - hes continued on.
DAVIS
But, Byron...Hell die the second I
leave his side.
KYRA
Is it Byron, or the treasure?
A beat, as Davis weighs his retort.
He answers by grabbing Kyras arm, pulling her into a KISS.
She fights it at first, pushes Davis away.
Then, she KISSES Davis back, just as fiercely as he did her.
When they separate, Kyra smiles at Davis.
87.
DAVIS
Well be right behind you.
KYRA
I know you will.
Kyra turns, sprints off. Davis watches her go, then turns.
DAVIS
Byron? Are you dead?
BYRON (O.S.)
Here! And bring fresh britches!
Davis follows Byrons voice down a hallway, and finds him
staring into a room - his face lit by a GOLDEN GLOW...
TREASURE ROOM
Davis enters to find a vast SWATH of gold, silver, and
jewels. Byron was right - a treasure beyond imagination.
DAVIS
I was beginning to think wed never
get paid.
Byron CLAPS Davis on the back.
BYRON
Dig in, mate. A third is yours.
DAVIS
Thanks, but its two-thirds.
BYRON
Yes, yes, of course...
Davis and Byron grin at one another, then STUFF pockets.
As Davis climbs the loot pile - his eyes go widest when he
spots a remarkable, golden CHEST PLATE near the back...
Back to Byron, who is choosing new RINGS.
BYRON (CONTD)
(to himself)
Ill tell my countrymen that I won
them in Greece. For valor!
EXT. VAULT ENTRY - MT. LYCAON - CONTINUOUS
Takis paces impatiently in front of the open vault door as
Mahmet stands at ease, alongside his platoon of Soldiers.
88.
MAHMET
Told you not to let them out of
your sight.
TAKIS
Ready your men. Were going in
after them.
Takis freezes at the sound of RUMBLING from within the Vault.
TAKIS (CONTD)
Did you hear that?
Another RUMBLING, but this time from the sky above - THUNDER.
Mahmet looks at the DARK STORM CLOUDS forming in the sky.
BOOM! LIGHTNING strikes the mountains peak. Takis FLINCHES.
MAHMET
If you asked an hour ago, Id have
said wed see clear skies for days.
TAKIS
The sound I heard came from inside.
Takis approaches the partially open vault door - he listens
carefully to the sound of GALLOPING, paws on the floor...
Mahmet joins him, his ear to the darkness beyond the door.
MAHMET
Sounds like horses, running right The vault door BLASTS open, and KNOCKS Takis and Mahmet to
the earth, where they sit in stunned silence, as AN ARMY OF WEREWOLVES POURS OUT!
The stunned Ottomans fumble with their muskets and kilij, but
theyre helpless against the Werewolves.
Takis crawls away, escapes to his horse, and RIDES OFF.
Mahmet draws his own blade - a Werewolf leaps at him, he
CARVES the wolfs head off! As Mahmet gets to his feet He sees the wolfs head change into that of a human. Despite
his horror, Mahmet CHARGES into battle to join his men...
89.
INT. TREASURE ROOM - MT. LYCAON - CONTINUOUS
His arms full of loot, Byron notices JEWELS pouring from the
bullet hole in the stuffed pocket of Davis military coat.
BYRON
Your ships leaking, Captain.
Davis transfers the jewels to a more secure pocket - but
stops, when a TREMOR rattles the coins...
BYRON (CONTD)
Did you feel that?
A STRONGER TREMOR KNOCKS THEM DOWN! Then, the pile of gold
COLLAPSES INTO ITSELF, sinking until it reveals a CHASM, forming in the floor. Byron gazes down into the
crevasse and sees gold MELT in a BLAST of volcanic fire!
The CHASM expands, with Davis and Byron on opposite sides.
BYRON (CONTD)
Quick, jump to this side!
Davis considers the jewels and gold hes trying to carry...
DAVIS
Oh, goddammit! We just got here!
He drops the loot, and LEAPS as the chasm BLASTS FIRE again.
Davis FLIES through the flames, but lands short, barely
catching the opposite edge with his fingers!
Byron grabs hold of Davis arms, catches a glimpse of the
FIRE LICKING Davis kicking legs.
BYRON
(straining to hold on)
Why. Are. You. So. Heavy?
DAVIS
Pull me up, you limp-wristed fop!
BYRON
Swing your legs over the side!
Davis STRAINS, swings his legs up, allowing Byron to pull him
to safety. The two collapse next to each other, exhausted.
BYRON (CONTD)
Good lord, youre heavy! Did you
eat the gold?
90.
Davis helps Byron to his feet, and they SPRINT for the exit,
just as JETS OF FIRE erupt from the gorge.
EXT. VAULT ENTRY - MT. LYCAON - DAY
Arcadia has gone dark as night as STORM CLOUDS brew overhead.
Lighting BLASTS and sets FIRE to tall trees. They become
GIANT TORCHES, lighting the now nightmarish countryside.
Felix, Kyra and Nikita spill out of the mountain to find DEAD OTTOMANS - and only a few slaughtered Sons of Lycaon.
As Felix, Kyra and Nikita search the carnage, theyre joined
by Byron and Davis, who SPRINT into them!
BYRON
Mt. Lycaon! ITS ABOUT TO BOOOOOOOM! LIGHTNING strikes the mountains peak, opening the
earth - a BLAST OF FIRE REACHES THE HEAVENS!
Collective reactions of SHOCK and HORROR.
FELIX
Ive failed. Lycaons free. Now,
Zeus fury will destroy us all.
KYRA
How do we fight the wolves, Papa?
We have to be smarter...
FELIX
(smiles)
And, better armed.
His hands TWIST TIGHTER around the spears shaft.
KYRA
Nikita, can you track them?
Nikita is already on it - searching the grass for clues.
NIKITA
The last Ottomans fled West to
their camp. But, Lycaon went
South...towards our village.
KYRA
Then, thats where were going.
(to Davis)
Did you get your fill of gold?
91.
DAVIS
Not even Zeus will keep me from
getting paid what Im owed. Byron?
BYRON
Mother always said I was from the
devil. And, here I am, at the end
of the world.
(beat)
Id like to prove her wrong.
KER-RACK! A blast of FIREBALLS launch from the mountains
peak! Together, our heroes RUN for the village.
EXT. OTTOMAN ARMY ENCAMPMENT - DAY
Mahmet, soaked in blood and carrying a SEVERED HEAD, enters
the camp, leading a handful of equally bloodstained Ottomans.
The battalion of Soldiers stand at attention, shocked by the
sight of Mahmet and his decimated platoon.
INT. COMMAND TENT - OTTOMAN ARMY ENCAMPMENT - CONTINUOUS
Takis POURS over ancient texts at a makeshift desk.
TAKIS
(panicked)
It cant be...it cant be...
Takis RIPS pages from the books, nearing a total breakdown,
when Mahmet TEARS down the tent flap and STORMS inside.
Mahmet tosses Takis the head, who leaps back with disgust.
MAHMET
Ive killed hundreds of Greeks, but
never one like that. He was a giant
wolf when I took his head off.
Mahmet nears Takis, who has gone catatonic with fear.
MAHMET (CONTD)
A pack of these beasts cut down
forty of my men! Those we killed
changed into men! Do your pagan
books talk about that?
TAKIS
Its not the wolves we should fear.
Takis points past Mahmet, out of the tent to where -
92.
Mt. Lycaons FIRE reaches the storm clouds, the only light in
the growing darkness. Soldiers watch at the edge of camp.
TAKIS (O.S.) (CONTD)
King Lycaon has escaped. Now, the
world will be baptized in fire.
Mahmets stoic nature cant hide his sick pleasure of finding
himself on the front lines of a battle worthy of his mettle.
MAHMET
Well take the town, use its
defenses. Any Greek we find, in any
of their forms, will die tonight!
OTTOMAN ENCAMPMENT
Mahmet marches toward the Artillery Units SERGEANT.
MAHMET (CONTD)
Get hammers, and break up all the
stone you can find for the cannons.
ARTILLERY SERGEANT
Stone wont carry as far as lead.
MAHMET
No need for distance. Our enemies
are fast, theyll be close when you
fire. Break the stones.
The Artillery Platoon springs into action, pull HAMMERS from
a tool bin. Mahmet turns to the whole BATTALION with orders.
MAHMET (CONTD)
Listen up, and listen to every word
now, because I hate conversation
and time is short. Im sure youve
heard of the beasts we fought, the
product of some dark Greek sorcery.
But, they die when you shoot them.
They bleed, their limbs and heads
can be cut off. Avenge your fallen
brothers! I want every man armed
and ready in five minutes. Anyone
we meet, any creature we see, were
going to kill. Thats your command.
With that, the DRUM CORPS starts the CALL TO ARMS.
COMMAND TENT
Mahmet enters the tent, approaches a WOODEN CHEST.
93.
He UNLOCKS the chest. Inside: A LEATHER PISTOL BRACE, SIX
SHORT PISTOLS - stubby, thick - and a LONG HANDLED HATCHET.
Mahmet loads the pistols into the brace, then CLASPS it on.
Then, he hooks the hatchet onto the left side of his belt,
opposite his still blood-streaked kilij.
Lastly, Mahmet removes a bag from the chest, OPENS IT to
reveal fifteen black porcelain spheres - PRIMITIVE GRENADES.
EXT. ARCADIAN TOWN - DAY
THUNDERCLAPS rattle the buildings as Arcadians pour into the
streets, gasping at the TOWER OF FIRE rising from Mt. Lycaon.
TOWN ENTRANCE
Our heroes arrive, worse for wear, to find the Arcadians
watching Mt. Lycaon - they turn to Felix now.
Felix, seeing all eyes upon him, makes his orders FELIX
Greeks of Arcadia! Lycaons free!
Arm yourselves! Guns, axes, spears!
The Wolves are free!
Every able-bodied Arcadian - most over 50 - answers the call.
They run into their home, and emerge wearing OLD WOLF PELTS,
from their own Lycopolite days. They arm themselves with
makeshift spears, knives, and muskets.
TOWN CENTER - MOMENTS LATER
Byron, Davis, and Arcadians FORTIFY every alley with
BARRICADES made of stacked furniture, stones, and rubble.
Dripping sweat, Davis HEFTS a boulder into place.
DAVIS
When the Ottomans return - and they
will - well drive them into our
shooting gallery here.
Byron, dry as a bone, sets a tiny chair on Davis stone.
Davis wags his head at Byrons physical efforts.
KYRA (O.S.)
OTTOMANS! Coming from the West!
Byron and Davis look up to -
94.
KYRA, perched in the CHURCH STEEPLE, scanning the horizon.
KYRAS POV: The Ottomans marching. The faint sound of DRUMS.
TOWN WALL - MOMENTS LATER
Kyra rushes to Felix and Nikita at the town wall.
KYRA (CONTD)
I count a thousand Turks!
FELIX
Any sign of Lycaon?
Kyra shakes her head.
NIKITA
Hes biding his time, waiting for
the best moment to strike.
FELIX
Then, well take the fight to
him...after we kill off an entire
battalion of the Ottoman Army.
Felix knows, its a big order. Nikita turns to the Arcadians.
NIKITA
(lifts her sword)
ARCADIA!
ARCADIANS
(lift their weapons)
ARCADIA!
Felix grins - at least theyre ready to fight.
EXT. PLAINS OUTSIDE TOWN - CONTINUOUS
Under dark clouds and the CONSTANT THUNDER and LIGHTNING
BLASTS, the Ottomans press forward to the DRUMS.
Mahmet and Takis ride in the lead. Mahmet turns to Takis.
MAHMET
Fear spreads quicker than fire.
TAKIS
Were all going to die today.
MAHMET
Some of us will die, yes. But, to
the glory of the Empire.
95.
Takis would respond, but a HOWL from the forest SILENCES him.
Mahmet angles his head toward the sound to gauge distance.
MAHMET (CONTD)
Two hundred yards away.
(to Takis)
Aim for their heads and chests. Try
to take a few with you to hell.
More HOWLS join the first, growing into a terrifying CHORUS.
EXT. ARCADIAN TOWN - CONTINUOUS
The Arcadians cease preparations to listen to the HOWLING.
Felix turns to Nikita amidst the howling and drums...
FELIX
Lycaons war cry. Hes hungry for
battle. And, well give it to him.
CENTER OF TOWN
Davis looks over the barricades - nods. Good enough.
DAVIS
Those of you that are very old,
take the top windows and drop
rocks, hot oil, chairs. Everyone
else, hold the center.
(to Byron)
You, take over here.
BYRON
Where are you going?
DAVIS
Im better on the move. Keep the
walls up high, Lord Byron.
The wind blows ASH across Byrons face. He wipes it off,
looks past the Ottomans to Mt. Lycaon, now BLASTING DOZENS OF FIREBALLS LIKE ARTILLERY SHELLS!
EXT. PLAINS OUTSIDE TOWN - CONTINUOUS
Mahmet rides along the ranks, as FIREBALLS hurtle overhead.
MAHMET
Hold formation! Double time!
The Soldiers hustle, as BOOM! A fireball CRASHES nearby!
96.
MAHMET (CONTD)
Onward! Keep moving!
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! Fireballs CRASH DOWN everywhere, churning
up the earth, the impact knocking men to their knees!
EXT. EDGE OF THE FOREST - CONTINUOUS
FIREBALLS rain into the woods, setting the forest ABLAZE.
Escaping the smoke and flames, LYCAON and his SONS emerge...
EXT. ARCADIAN TOWN WALL - CONTINUOUS
All watch the FOREST FIRE, where they see The Werewolves APPEAR at the edge of the woods.
Felix rubs a hand through Kyras hair. She looks up at him.
FELIX
Im sorry we had to leave home.
KYRA
This is our home, Papa.
He grins. A father-daughter moment at the end of the world.
EXT. PLAINS OUTSIDE TOWN - CONTINUOUS
Mahmet studies the Werewolves, silhouetted by the flames.
MAHMET
Prepare cannons! To the North!
The Cannoneers roll cannons to the front line.
Muskets!
MAHMET (CONTD)
97.
Hold!
MAHMET (CONTD)
98.
Ottomans half-charge, half-flee from the Werewolves, even as
FIREBALLS and LIGHTNING continue to strike all around them.
FELIX
Arcadians! Youve long protected
this mountain!
INTERCUT - Werewolves slaughtering Ottomans on the move
FELIX (CONTD)
Youve mastered the hunt, the quick
and merciless kill! But now, the
beasts are at our walls!
INTERCUT - Mahmet, leading the charge on the town
FELIX (CONTD)
On my order...ready your muskets!
Pick your targets! And fire true!
INTERCUT - The grim faces of the Arcadians, picking their
shots as both Ottomans and Werewolves come closer...
FIRE!
FELIX (CONTD)
FELIX (CONTD)
99.
BOOM! Fireballs HIT the town - many of the homes IGNITE!
A WEREWOLF ON FIRE RUSHES Ottoman Soldiers, spreading the
flames to their skin and clothes. They SCREAM as flesh melts.
CENTER OF TOWN
Byron eyes the black clouds, the lightning, the fireballs
arcing. He hears SCREAMS, BLASTS, from the edge of town...
BYRON
Id better be knighted for this.
Then, Werewolves and Ottomans APPEAR on Byrons left.
BYRON (CONTD)
Ready the West Alley!
OLD PEOPLE positioned above in windows - ready.
BYRON (CONTD)
LET EM HAVE IT!
Heavy pans, hot oil, firebrands, and rocks POUR on the enemy.
From the South Alley - Ottomans, chased by more Werewolves.
BYRON (CONTD)
South Alley!
The South Alley repeats the routine - bricks, stones, chairs.
A granite statue CRUSHES two Ottomans.
TOWN WALLS
Kyra, Nikita and Davis kill Werewolves and Ottomans with
their spears, swords, and pistols.
But, Davis guns CLICK empty. He holsters, draws his saber,
but sees - the wall is a lost cause.
DAVIS
Cmon, everyone back to the center!
Davis leads Kyra and Nikita away, towards the town center But, they dont see Mahmet and Felix BATTLING - small cuts on
their arms, nicks on their faces, but neither giving an inch.
Felix stabs, drives Mahmet back, spins and SMACKS Mahmets
hatchet down with the butt of his spear, turns and Mahmets kilij pierces Felixs chest! A mortal wound.
100.
Felixs strength ebbs, as he falls to his knees - much to
Mahmets interest, the mark on Felixs arm FADES...
MAIN ROAD
Kyra SHRIEKS, and grabs her arm...smoke RISES from her skin,
as the BIRTHMARK sears itself upon her.
NIKITA
(awed)
The mark of Nyktimus!
KYRA
(realizing)
But...no...no, PAPA!
TOWN WALLS
Mahmet watches Felix DYING, as the birthmark disappears.
MAHMET
Tell me about the wolves.
Felix grins, in spite of his approaching death.
FELIX
Theyre my family. And...
(leans in)
...theyll rip you apart!
Mahmet sneers, lets Felixs body fall, returns to battle.
MAIN ROAD
Kyra SPRINTS - two Werewolves in her way. She STABS the
first, CUTS down the second, and keeps running Nikita and Davis finish the Werewolves with their swords, and
continue to chase after Kyra...
TOWN WALLS
Kyra RUSHES to Felix, barely alive. But, alive enough to
notice the BIRTHMARK that is now on Kyras arm.
KYRA
Papa, please! Hold on!
Davis and Nikita hang back, as Felix talks to Kyra.
FELIX
Its alright...I know youll finish
it. Im so proud of you, Kyra...
101.
KYRA
Just stay alive for me! Papa?
Nothing. Felix is gone. Kyra SCREAMS - and her CRY is ECHOED
by the WOLVES HOWLING...
CENTER OF TOWN
Byron and the Arcadians fight Ottomans and Werewolves alike.
BAM! and, another BAM! as Ottomans hurl GRENADES!
Seeing this, Byron STEPS up, and makes a target of himself.
BYRON
You stupid bastards! You imbeciles!
You, you...literary critics!
An Ottoman LIGHTS a grenade, and HURLS it at Byron.
Byron fearlessly SNATCHES the grenade, and TOSSES it back.
It EXPLODES between Ottomans, killing them!
Byron hurries to them, and finds a stash of more grenades.
Then, he eyes the STEEPLE...and BREAKS for it.
Coming around the corner - Kyra, Davis and Nikita.
NIKITA
Kyra, with me!
Nikita and Kyra rush to the South Alley to fight Ottomans But, Davis sees, across the square MAHMET watching him.
DAVIS
Oh, great...
Mahmet SMILES, visible even through the haze of the fires.
Davis CROUCHES down, ducks behind an overturned table and
quickly RELOADS one of his Colliers...
Kyra and Nikita, meanwhile, stand against a TIDE of
Ottomans...that run RIGHT PAST them. Theyre fleeing from KING LYCAON, and three of his Sons. They stop at the sight of
Kyra, and the silver spear. Lycaon SNARLS.
The three Sons CIRCLE Kyra and Nikita, as Lycaon watches...
STEEPLE
102.
Byron has a BIRDS EYE VIEW of the battle - flared out in red
as a fireball passes above...
Byron straps the WINGS over his chest. Buckles them tight.
Then, he reaches in his coat pocket, and takes out a CIGAR.
He lights the cigar with a match, then STEPS onto the EDGE.
A PIGEON lands nearby. Eyes Byron.
BYRON
Any suggestions?
SQUAWK! The pigeon EXPLODES, shot by a random musket ball.
Noted.
BYRON (CONTD)
Byron PUSHES OFF, throws his arms out with the wings and FALLS. But eventually, his wings catch wind, and LIFT HIM UP!
AIR
Byron LAUGHS HYSTERICALLY, as he targets Ottomans on the
ground. He pulls a grenade from his pouch, lights it, and - lets it go! BAM! Kills a Werewolf. Byron lights another...
BYRON (CONTD)
So many points for Cambridge! I do
hope someones keeping a tally!
TOWN CENTER
Davis finishes reloading. He peeks around table, to find Mahmet HACKING two Arcadians to bits. Davis aims, and BANG!
The shot GRAZES Mahmets face - he grimaces, wipes blood off.
Mahmet takes out two big-bore pistols, aims and BANG! BANG!
Davis leaps away to cover as he FIRES BACK, but he misses
Mahmet in the movement.
Mahmet drops the two empty pistols, then takes a GRENADE from
the pouch. He LIGHTS it off a bit of flaming timber, and
HURLS it to Davis cover.
The grenade comes around the corner. Davis leaps away - BAM!
Davis made it! But, Mahmet lights two more...
AIR
103.
Byron swoops over Davis and Mahmets battle - Byron tries
lighting his own grenade, but his cigar DROPS.
BYRON (CONTD)
No, no! Oh, shite!
Byron grits his teeth, PULLS the wings in, DESCENDS fast...
TOWN CENTER
Davis DODGES, but Mahmet leads him with the next toss BAM! Davis is thrown against the alley wall by the blast!
AIR
Byron HURTLES downwards, aiming for Mahmet...
DAVIS!
BYRON (CONTD)
TOWN CENTER
Davis staggers up. Dazed, he tries to lift his gun...
BANG. Davis STUMBLES backwards from a shot from Mahmets
pistol. Davis GRABS his chest, and Inspects his coat - his fathers coat. He finds a NEW HOLE,
smoking just above the hole that killed his father.
Mahmet drops the gun, takes out his fourth pistol - BANG.
Right in the heart.
The Yankee falls, still holding his gun.
Mahmet marches towards Davis, unaware of Byron behind him WHAM! Byron CRASHES into Mahmet, they TUMBLE into the alley,
the wings SHREDDING off!
Byron is very dazed - Mahmet manages to shake it off first.
When Byron returns to lucidity, he finds Mahmet standing over
him - a big bore flintlock in each hand. Death is near.
BYRON (CONTD)
Go ahead, you big bastard. When the
world hears of my death, a thousand
Englishmen will take my place.
MAHMET
Then youll have friends in Hell.
104.
DAVIS (O.S.)
But, Id wager you wont.
Mahmet turns around slowly, and finds Davis - very alive, and
with a Collier aimed for Mahmets chest.
Davis BLASTS Mahmet through the heart. Then, he cocks the
flint back, BLASTS the huge Ottoman a second time.
Mahmet goes to his knees, then slumps over DEAD.
Davis helps the shocked Byron up, who HUGS Davis.
BYRON
Youre alive! You saved me, and
were both alive! But, I saw you
get shot! I saw you get shot twice!
Davis opens up his shirt - underneath, the GOLDEN CHESTPLATE
from Lycaons vault. The reason why Davis was so damn heavy.
BYRON (CONTD)
You thieving genius! This is...my
god. This is the armor of Achilles!
Davis PEELS the deformed lead ball off the armor.
DAVIS
Is he still around to claim it?
Byron chuckles, sharing a moment - before a Werewolf CHARGES!
Byron casually lights a grenade on a burning bit of timber...
KYRA AND NIKITA, meanwhile, face off with the three
Werewolves, as Lycaon watches at the South Alley.
The first Werewolf SNAPS at Kyra, but Nikitas sword SLASHES
the wolf in the snout.
As the second Werewolf leaps, Kyras spear CUTS his throat,
and he BLEEDS OUT in moments.
The third Werewolf LEAPS at them, but Kyra and Nikitas
weapons pierce his chest simultaneously, and kill him.
Nikita and Kyra turn to face Lycaon...
He ROARS at the two women warriors before him, and CHARGES!
They dodge the swipes of Lycaons long claws, and Nikita
SLASHES back, but even when she HITS - the wound CLOSES.
105.
NIKITA
Kill him! It has to be you!
Kyra stabs at Lycaon, CARVES across his shoulder - the wound
remains, as Lycaon YIPS out with pain, GRABS his shoulder.
She stabs again, but Lycaon SNATCHES the spear and RIPS it
away! The Wolf King TOSSES the spear off to the side.
Kyra, unarmed - she turns, RUNS for the spear! Lycaon goes to
chase, but at that moment, BAM! A GRENADE blasts him back!
Byron lights another, as he and Davis arrive to help.
BYRON
Get the spear!
Lycaon scrambles to his feet, CHARGES Byron and Davis. As
Byron hurls another grenade, Davis BLASTS at Lycaon...
Kyra finds the SPEAR, but as she reaches for it Kyra!
NIKITA (O.S.)
KYRA
106.
KYRA starts to run, builds momentum, then HURLS the spear Just as Lycaon BITES Davis throat, his blood runs out THUMP. The spear BURIES in Lycaons ribs!
LIGHTNING STRIKES THE SPEAR!
Lycaon and Davis are UNITED in that moment by Zeus power,
and as Lycaon releases Davis, Davis throat heals, and his
eyes go as yellow as Lycaons...
THROUGHOUT THE TOWN
The remaining Werewolves TUMBLE, as though wounded. They
clutch their ribs - exactly where the spear hit Lycaon.
Lycaons growl turns into a low MOAN, as he falls first to
his knees, hands on the ground, then flops over.
LIGHTNING STRIKES all around the Town and the Mountain,
ROLLING THUNDER in the air as Zeus acknowledges the kill.
Kyra walks slowly to Lycaon, and as she does Lycaon CHANGES - back into the Greek King. There is a family
resemblance between Kyra and Lycaon.
LYCAON
(hoarse)
Bow to me!
Kyras nostrils flare in an unconscious show of defiance.
LYCAON (CONTD)
Bow to me, or die!
Lycaon reaches for a sword, but Kyra STEPS on Lycaon, YANKS
the spear out and STABS him a second time - FINISHES IT.
A BLAST OF LIGHTNING illuminates Kyra in the darkness.
It begins to RAIN - clean, clear, by the bucket.
The raindrops land on Davis face. He blinks, grabs his
healed throat - hes ALIVE, but his left eye is still YELLOW.
In the distance, the FIRE PILLAR from Mt. Lycaon DISAPPEARS
back into the mountain...
Forest and house fires are extinguished by the deluge - white
steam fills the air. The blood and ash wash away...
KYRA pulls her spear from the dead king.
107.
When Kyra looks up, she finds that shes now facing the
remaining Ottoman force, reorganized as twenty men.
Theyre covered in blood, but theyre ready - kilij in hand.
Kyra lifts her spear - holds herself ready to fight them.
An Ottoman surrenders. Drops the sword, hands in the air.
Because, behind Kyra, is the remainder of the Arcadian force fifty people or so, with muskets, spears and axes.
Byron and Davis stand at the front - ready for more.
Kyra turns back to the Ottomans, and shes just about to say
it, when Byron LEAPS out and BYRON
On behalf of the people of Greece,
and as an honorary Commander of the
Greek Armies, surrender!
Now, all the Ottomans SURRENDER.
BYRON (CONTD)
(proudly, to himself)
I won this battle. History books
can never take that away from me.
But, its Kyra that turns back to the people, and KYRA
(lifts her spear)
ARCADIA!!!
EVERYONE
(lift their weapons)
ARCADIA!!!
Their shouts continue, as we drift off...
EXT. PEAK OF HYDRA - DAY
Davis and Byron walk up the hill of Hydra Island. Davis left
eye is still yellow, but otherwise - hearty and healthy.
BYRON
Itll be here somewhere!
DAVIS
I thought you said the best wine in
Greece. I dont see any taverns.
108.
Byron shows Davis a bottle of wine in his satchel.
BYRON
Thats for later. Read this.
Byron hands Davis Alexs leather bound book.
DAVIS
Oh. I, uh, I dont read Greek.
Byron takes the book back.
BYRON
I know. But, I wanted to hear you
admit it.
DAVIS
Alright, so?
BYRON
According to Alex, the peak of
Hydra is where Daedalus kept his
actual workshop. Right here!
Davis takes the bottle, and twists the corkscrew.
DAVIS
Huh. I see these rocks, and some
ships, but I dont see a workshop.
Byron finds a stone with an odd side. He takes out a wax
sheet and a graphite pen, then sets a RUBBING of the stone.
DAVIS (O.S.) (CONTD)
Hey. Hey, Byron!
Byron finishes his rubbing - identifiably a CONCH SHELL.
DAVIS (O.S.) (CONTD)
Youd better see this!
Davis is looking out across the sea - where dozens of TALL
MASTS are growing more clear by the minute.
DAVIS (CONTD)
Warships. Warships! Byron!
Davis turns, and finds that Byron is gone.
INT. DAEDALUS WORKSHOP - CONTINUOUS
The workshop is hidden in a cave, high in Hydras cliff face.
109.
Mechanical DEVICES, INVENTIONS, and TOOLS on the benches.
Automaton blueprints on the wall. Schematics for the design
of the submarine. A pair of multi-lens glasses...
Davis DESCENDS the ladder, into the workshop. Hes amazed and then he finds Byron, very pleased with himself.
DAVIS
We have a problem. Theres at least
twenty warships sailing for Hydra!
BYRON
I found a buyer for Achilles
armor. Want to what it was worth?
Byron points to the SHIPS through a wide window cut through
the stone face, overlooking the town and beaches of Hydra.
BYRON (CONTD)
That much. Twenty ships. English,
French, and Russian. Enough to win
this war. Dont you agree?
Davis can only nod. Hes shocked - beside himself with joy.
BYRON (CONTD)
Davis, since weve been through so
much...could I have my rings?
DAVIS
I already hocked them.
A beat, as they watch the ships, and pass the wine.
BYRON
I finished the poem I started
before setting out for all this. I
want you to hear it.
DAVIS
Goddammit. Go, go ahead.
As Byron recites the end of the poem he started in Ioannina EXT. MOUNTAIN CLIFFS - ARCADIA - DAY
Kyra rides a horse, spear on her back and musket in hand,
with a contingent of Greek rebel cavalry along a rocky cliff.
Among her ranks is Davis, who rides his horse beside Kyras.
110.
He glances over at her with a smile, then SPURS ahead. She
smiles back playfully, then gallops hard to catch up.
BYRON (V.O.)
To do good to Mankind is the
chivalrous plan...
They halt at a cliff, and dismount. Kyra and Davis approach
the steep edge to peek down at the MOUNTAIN PASS below.
There, an OTTOMAN REGIMENT is camped. Davis turns to Kyra
with a grin, as COARSE HAIR and CLAWS grow from his body.
After the transformation, Davis LEAPS off the cliff towards
the enemy below - his claws poised to strike.
BYRON (V.O.)
And is always as nobly requited...
EXT. STREETS OF ATHENS - DAY
Simon, along with the One-Eyed Rebel and the rest of the
young Greek patriots, STORMS the Acropolis.
In the fight, Simon spots the HEADLESS HEPHEASTUS. Grins.
BYRON (V.O.)
Then battle for Freedom where ever
you can...
INT. DAEDALUS WORKSHOP - DAY
Byron finds a hidden door - OPENS it.
HIDDEN ROOM
Byron enters with a lantern, and finds SHELVES of CASES.
Hundreds of cases, and each one is uniquely decorated.
Byron opens the first case - and finds ANOTHER CHALICE.
BYRON (V.O.)
And, if not shot or hanged, youll
get knighted.
As Byrons smile turns into a chuckle, and then a laugh, we FADE OUT.
THE END
