lab report #3B

Overview: In Industry, we will have to deal with fully automated systems with

number of valves and cylinders. This experiments is introduction to fully/semiautomated circuits. The result required is of two double acting cylinders which
extend and return turn by turn. C1 and C2 have process chart as under:

C1+ > C2+ > C1- > C2- > Repeat from C1
This is very important to make the circuit by using indirect control valves.
Because with direct control we can have problem with multiple air pressures at the
same time which can give unexpected results. To get rid of manual things, we use
Mechanical actuation switches which are basically 3/2 valves with spring return and
mechanical actuated.

Equipment: Here we use two double acting cylinders, C1 & C2. As in fig, you
can see the circuit diagram, it is easy to understand what is going on. Two 5/2
Valves are used with both sides air piloted. In addition to these two 3/2 valves
with spring return and mechanical actuated are also being used.

Working: well, in this stage, everything is automated therefore we can see the
whole working in steps,
1) by pressing the manual push button V1 (3/2 valve), we supply compressed air
into C1 to extend it via 5/2 valve (V2)
2) C1 extends and actuate S1 valve which give air to change the position of gate
inside the V3 valve, this will allow air to extend C2
3) C2 extends and actuate S2 valve which give air to change the position of gate
inside the V2 valve, this will allow air to return C1
4) C1 return and actuate S3 valve which give air to change the position of gate
inside the V3 valve, this will allow air to return C2
5) C2 returns and actuate S4 valve which give air to change the position of gate
inside the V2 valve via V1 (if still pressed), this will allow air to extend C1
And this way the process will repeat till you press the manual button V1

Learning: One most noticeable thing is the sequence of processes. If we just

press and release the V1 instantly, this will results in the one full cycle. From C1
extends to C2 return. This is the point where we have no control on cylinders during
the cycle. OK, if we press the button for a longer time, the cycle will repeat by itself.
We can use these type of automated systems in production lines where a constant
rate of movements are required.
