Reaction formation has some adjustment values, in helping to maintain
socially approved behavior. If it crosses certain limits, it leads to severe
maladjustments.

5) Explain displacement defense mechanism

Key: The expression of an unwanted feeling or thought is redirected from a

more threatening, powerful person to a weaker one. For Ex: A brother yells at
his younger sister after a teacher gives him a bad grade or marks.
Displacement has some adjustment values because it helps to discharge
emotional tension without risk of retaliation. The person may become
maladjusted when it is used beyond certain limits.
6) What is repression? Explain

Key: Unacceptable or unpleasant impulses are pushed back in to the

unconscious This happens without the awareness of the conscious mind- This
is also known as selective for getting. In the sense one cannot recall it.
Repression helps the individual to control dangerous and unacceptable
desires and at the same time alleviates the anxiety associated with such desires.
7) What is regression? Explain

Key: People behave as if they were at an early stage of development. For

ex: 1) a student who is over whelmed by exams might act in a childish
immature manner to escape his responsibilities.
2) a grown up jealous child reverting to bed wetting, baby talk, thumb
sucking and other infantile behavior to get parental attention, etc.
