Standard Specifications and Codes of Practice in New Zealand are
controlled, managed and published by The Standards Association
of New Zealand.
The New Zealand Standards determine the characteristics of the
steel used for concrete reinforcement, the manufacturing of welded
mesh, and the process of applying the mesh to the concrete.
NZS4761:2001 STEEL REINFORCING MATERIALS
This standard provides the specifications of the material
requirements for steel bars, wire and mesh intended for use in the
reinforced concrete structures which have been designed in
accordance with NZS3101

NZS3101:2006 CODE OF PRACTICE FOR THE DESIGN
OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES
This Standard lays out the development length and lap-splice
requirements for plain wire mesh and deformed wire mesh, and
is the basis of any pertinent calculations or recommendations
given in this United Steel guideline.

The New Zealand Standard 4671:2001 requires testing of every
batch of the seismic reinforcing mesh to ensure the mechanical
properties comply. Testing of the following properties are included:
Weld shear tests
Tensile yield strength tests
Uniform elongation test

as well as external testing laboratories to ensure properties comply
with the standard.

Sheet Sizes of our reinforcing mesh products are designed to
offer our customers ease of use and handling as well as meeting
NZ Standards requirements. All dimensions are specified in the
following product data sheets, and include the end and side
overhang lengths.
With our state-of-the-art Jger & Schlatter Mesh Welding
machine, United Steel is able to customise sheet sizes and lapping
requirements according to particular client specifications. Custom
orders can generally be turned around in two weeks including
delivery - this will depend on raw material availability and volume.

New United Steel Ductile Plus 500E mesh does more than meet
the building standards that apply from 1 February 2012. With
thicker wire, wider spacing and new sheet sizes, Ductile Plus 500E
is also easier to move and install.

HARD DRAWN MESH
Hard drawn wire meshes are the traditional New Zealand meshes.
In residential dwelling practice it has largely been replaced by the
Ductile Plus 500E seismic mesh, but can in certain applications
still be an alternative option. It is also still used in a wide range of
other applications (listed below).
The range includes 668 to 661 meshes (standard and large sheets)
as well as equivalent Rib meshes 147 to 212 (also known as step
through meshes).
Hard drawn wire mesh will typically provide a lower cost
equivalent to the Ductile Plus mesh where it complies with the
specific application.

Lap-splice requirements are set and controlled by the NZ
Standards Association in NZS3101:2006. There are a number
of variables and conditions associated with these.
LAPPAGES
Lappages
United Steel offer the following charts and diagrams to guide
calculations and design specifications. Please refer back to
NZS3101:2006 for substantiation in specific cases.
Please also be aware of the NZ Standards Associations
differential of requirements for plain wire mesh and deformed wire
mesh. Lap-splice requirements are different for plain v deformed,
and presented sheet designs are produced according to NZ
Standards guidelines. For this reason calculations for deformed
wire mesh and deformed bar lappages are the same.

Ductile 430 mesh is used by the construction industry as a
reinforcing mesh for structural concrete. The mesh is available
in various configurations and is designed to conform to NZS3101
for primary reinforcement in structural concrete elements and
also for topping slabs on proprietary flooring systems for
multi-story construction.
A range of 430 meshes are available all utilising the lapping
advantages available by having wires at 100mm pitch at the
exterior both longitudinally and latitudinally. Sheet sizes are configured to give consideration to lapping efficiency, but considering
handling constraints due to transport and on-site limitations.
