Annotated Bibliography

This annotated bibliography summarizes 5 sources related to the Black Lives Matter movement. The first source is the official Black Lives Matter website, which outlines the movement's values and principles as established by its founders. The second source is a news article that provides personal details about Keith Lamont Scott that bring into question his portrayal by the movement. A third source is a scholarly article arguing that while the cause is good, the movement's destructive protests negatively impact innocent families. It also critiques the response from politicians and media. A fourth source outlines psychologist Dolores Puterbaugh's view that the movement's destruction doesn't serve the goal of justice. The final source is a CNN news article providing facts and details about prominent cases that sparked

Annotated Bibliography

Are the people who represent the Black Lives Matter movement truly fighting for justice of the
victims, or are they simply jumping to conclusions and not only causing mass destruction to the
cities they attack, but also to the moral foundations of justice for African Americans that the
entire Black Lives Matter movement is supposed to stand for?

Cullors, Patrisse, Opal Tometi, and Alicia Garza. "Black Lives Matter." Who We Are and What
We Believe. Haki Creatives, 2016. Web. 17 Oct. 2016.
This source is the official website for the Black Lives Matters movement. It has
multiple different pages, including ones on who they are and what they believe in. Some
of the things included in the who they are page are their manifesto, their principles, and
why they were created. The things included in the what they believe in page are listed as
loving engagement, queer affirming, intergenerational, black families, empathy, black
villages, black women, collective values, transgender affirming, diversity, globalism,
restorative justice, and unapologetically black. Each of these sections go into deeper
analysis of the specific issues and morals that the Black Lives Matters movement
believe in. I am using this source because one of the main pieces of information that I
need to help research my inquiry questions is: What are the morals/meanings behind the
Black Lives Matters movement. Since this is the official website of this movement, it
will answer all the questions I have on the morals/meanings for Black Lives Matter.
This is a reliable source because even though it is mainly made up of opinions of the
movement, it is still the official page of the Black Lives Matters movement. This
website was created by the three girls, Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi, and Alicia Garza,
who founded the entire Black Lives Matters movement. As the founders of the Black
Lives Matters movement and as the creators of this website, the values/morals that they
founded this movement for should be 100% credible.
Miles, Tom and Colleen Jenkins. "Black Lives Matter." The Huffington Post.
TheHuffingtonPost.com, Inc., 2016. Web. 17 Oct. 2016.

This news source is a compilation of two articles written from different prospectives
about cases that caused an uproar in the Black Lives Matters movement. The first
article from this source that I am using is about the recent shooting here in Charlotte,
North Carolina, and it contains information about Keith Lamont Scotts personal life
about his family and why he may not have been the perfect person that the Black Lives
Matters movement portrayed him as. It gives a detailed report from his wife talking
about how she had to get a restraining order against him for abusing their son and
threatening to kill the entire family. The author of the article, Colleen Jenkins, fact
checked the wifes statement and everything she has stated in the article was true. Colleen
Jenkins is a reliable source because she has written many articles for the Huffington Post
about cases on a wide range of issues. The next article I am using relates the recent
shootings of African Americans to the past lynchings of slaves in the late 1800s and early
1900s.It goes into detail about how most African Americans are scared because their civil
rights that they fought so hard for are now seemingly starting to disappear. They believe
this because the shootings that the Black Lives Matters movement are fighting for are
seen as unjustified in some cases. They fear that they may be the next fatal victim of a
police shooting. Tom Miles, the author of this article, is a reliable source because he has
also written multiple articles for the Huffington Post. Although he is not African
American, in the article he still explains things from their perspective and fear of the
shootings.
Puterbaugh, Dolores T. "Black Lives Matter, Sometimes." ProQuest. USA Today, Jan. 2016.
Web. 17 Oct. 2016.

In this scholarly article that I am using it argues that innocent, hard-working families
should not have to worry about a riot coming into their homes and ruining them just
because they are angry over an issue. Dolores Puterbaugh, the author of this article, states
that this doesnt mean the Black Lives Matter movement doesnt stand for a good
cause, it just means that they are becoming destructive. She also argues that politicians
should be doing something about this issue. All they are doing is saying that All Lives
Matter, not just black lives, but they arent truly doing anything to stop the mass
destruction that this movement is causing. She also calls out the media, saying that if All
Lives Matter they would not only publish stories about the white, teenage girl that was
murdered, but also the young, African American girl who was abused and burned at the
stake. Instead, it is seen in most media and news sources that the white, teenage girls
murder will have multiple stories for weeks, but yet the young, African American girls
murder will maybe appear in one news story. This is a credible source because it is a
scholarly article that has been analyzed by many experts. Dolores T. Peterbaugh is also a
credible author because she is a psychotherapist in Florida, so she would know a lot of
information about the psychology aspect of my Extended Inquiry Project. She has also
written many other scholarly articles on different topics that also relate to the
psychological aspect of issues.
Yan, Holly. "'Black Lives Matter' Cases: What Happened after the Protests?" CNN. Cable News
Network, 27 July 2016. Web. 17 Oct. 2016.
This popular news source listed above summarizes all of the different shooting cases that
have occurred in the United States that caused an uproar in the Black Lives Matter
movement. Some of the cases that the article mentions are the Trayvon Martin case that

Dunkle 5

started the whole Black Lives Matters movement, the Eric Garner case, the Michael
Brown case, the Walter Scott case, and the Freddie Gray case. All of these cases go into
detail about who was involved with the shootings (mainly police officers and an African
American man), where and when it happened, what happened, and what the outcomes of
the case were. The reason I want to use this source is because it goes into magnanimous
detail about each and every one of the cases, and all of the facts surrounding the cases.
This source also mentions how the Black Lives Matters movement influenced/reacted
to issues surrounding each case. I think this source is reliable, although a little bit biased
because it is written by Holly Yan a writer for cnn.com and cnn.com is typically a
conservatively biased news source. Holly Yan is, according to cnn.com, part reporter,
part writer and part editor for CNN Digital, specializing in international and breaking
news. She is specialized in a field that handles Black Lives Matters issues all of the
time. Almost every Black Lives Matters movement has made breaking news on TV or
some other popular news source. However, she is a news reporter so everything that is
written in the article may not be 100% accurate. I did however check out other credible
news sites to see if the facts of the cases add up to what Holly Yan wrote, and the
compilation of facts do seem to match all the sources I can find. Overall, even though this
is a conservatively biased news source, I think it is still credible because this article is
based on facts from the cases and not opinions that can be influenced.
