Zika emergency over

THE World Health Organization

However in a statement issued
on the weekend, the WHO said
Zika remains a significant enduring
challenge requiring intense action,
with pregnant women still warned
to avoid areas of transmission.

Dispensary
Corner
THE once bitten, twice shy
theory didnt work so well for one
unlucky Aussie who was bitten by
a snake twice in the space of just
three days.
The 18-year-old contractor was
first bitten on the lower leg while
clearing scrub on a Queensland
property last week and was
transferred to Mackay Base
Hospital in a stable condition.
After being released he went
back to work in the same paddock
only to be nipped twice on the
forearm by another snake.
While he has recovered from
both attacks something tells us
he might not be in such a rush to
return to the paddock this time
around.

IT TURNS out Apple Watches

may do a fair bit more than just
look on trend, with one UK man
claiming the gadget saved his life
by alerting him to an undiagnosed
heart condition.
Via his Apple Watch the 51-yearold noticed his heart rate was
abnormally low, sitting at around
42 beats per minute.
He continued to monitor his
pulse and following a visit to his
GP and Liverpool Heart and Chest
Hospital he was diagnosed with
cardiac sarcoidosis, a condition
blocking signals to the heart.
He has since undergone surgery
to have a defibrillator fitted.
Nice one Apple!

SHPA workforce paper

AUSTRALIAN hospital pharmacy
professionals are under-utilised
compared to their OECD peers and
have limited opportunity for career
advancement, according to a white
paper released by the Society of
Hospital Pharmacists of Australia.
The document presents the
findings of the Pharmacy Technician
and Assistant Role Redesign within
Australian Hospitals project and
was presented at the SHPAs
Medicines Management 2016
Conference in Perth on Saturday.
The societys ceo Kristin Michaels
said the white paper was part of a
commitment to the transformation
of pharmacy workforce.
Pharmacy technicians and
assistants play critically important
roles in medicines management
in hospitals and it is essential that
we understand changes in the
dynamics of medicines supply in
hospitals and how this will impact
on these important roles in the
future, Michaels said.
The paper highlights the
progressive move by pharmacists

away from dispensary based supply

functions and towards team-based
patient-centric roles.
Therefore, the need to
effectively harness the technician
and assistant workforce to support
advancing hospital pharmacy
services is crucial, Michaels said.
Australian hospital pharmacy
technicians and assistants are
under-utilised compared to their
OECD peers, and there are limited
opportunities for pharmacy
technicians and assistants seeking
career advancement in Australia.
Our five recommendations
arising from the report provide
opportunities to address
current issues around enhanced
roles, improved education and
training, and better professional
development pathways, she said.
SHPAs Federal Council has
commissioned further work
based on the white paper
recommendations that would see
active change to the workforce.

summary document CLICK HERE.

Guild
Update
Guild member
model referendum
dont forget to vote
GUILD members should by now
have received referendum ballot
papers for the Guild National
Councils plan to move to a new
membership model based on
premises alone.
At present, the membership
system applies a fee to premises
as well as proprietors.
The new premises-based model
aligns the Guild with the fact
that pharmacies are increasingly
owned by multiple proprietors.
The proprietor fee will cease.
It is simpler, fairer and more
equitable, and would apply
from the 2017/18 financial year.
More than three-quarters of
all Members will be financially
better off in terms of the fees
they pay.
Full details of the proposal are
included in the voting paper
pack which was posed last week.
The voting period runs until 12
December 2016 but the Guild
is urging members to post their
ballot paper as early as possible.
