Electrical "Motor Failure": If Motor Does Not Operate or Trips Overload, Immediately

The document provides steps to troubleshoot an electrical motor failure, including turning off power, checking wire connections and amperage draw, ensuring the motor spins freely and does not have rough bearings or is jammed. If the motor does not operate or trips the overload, further steps include disconnecting the motor wires and checking for short circuits in the motor windings or continuity issues in the wiring.

Electrical Motor Failure

1. Turn power OFF at the control panel main disconnect.

2. Check all wire connections between motor junction box and contactor/starter
(line and load sides of contactor, overload, terminal blocks, etc.).
3. Be sure amp. setting is correct on adjustable overload (refer to data plate).
4. Check that motor is not stuck or jammed (should spin freely).
5. Listen for rough sound indicating possible bad bearings (when spinning).
6. Run motor and check amp. draw on all legs of power (all should be close and
within rating on data plate).

If motor does not operate or trips overload, immediately

1. Turn power OFF at the control panel main disconnect.
2. Open motor junction box and disconnect wires from motor.
3. Check for shorted motor (refer to diagram).
a. Check each winding on motor to ground (should be no continuity to
ground).
b. Check each winding to each other for cross short.
c. Check each winding for Open.
4. Check for continuity (no opens) in wires from motor junction box to control
panel.
