Seton Hill University Lesson Plan Template: Name Subject Grade Level Date/Duration

This lesson plan template is for a 3rd grade science class on density. The lesson will involve showing students a video on density and liquids of different densities and having them conduct an experiment putting various liquids into a vase to demonstrate their different densities. Students will fill out a lab sheet formally assessing their understanding of why the liquids separate into different levels based on their density. The teacher will also informally assess understanding through discussion during the video and experiment.

S3.C.1.1.1 Describe matter in terms of its observable

properties (e.g., weight, mass, shape, size, color,
texture, state).
S3.C.1.1.2 Classify matter using observable physical
properties (e.g., weight, mass, shape, size, color,
texture, state).

The students will be able to identify how there are
different levels of liquids in the experiment by filling out
the lab sheet, they must mention the word density in
order to receive full credit.

Observe the children while they look at the liquid

experiment.
Discuss what is going on in the experiment and talk
about the density of different liquids.
Walk around and ask questions about the different
liquids.
Ask questions while showing the video.
Ask questions about density at the end of class.

Environmental Awareness
The students will be shown some photos of the PB oil
spill that happened a few years ago in the ocean. They
will be asked about what kind of effect it could have
had on the environment and the animal life in those
areas. They will learn that pollution is a serous problem
and become more conscious about pollution.

Isles are clear and set up so there is more than enough

space for him to maneuver through them.

Activating Prior Knowledge
Give the students a KWL chart about density.

Ask the students if some liquids are heavier than others.

Big Idea Statement

States of matter have different characteristics and
properties.
Essential Questions Statement
What are some characteristics of liquids?
Can some liquids be heavier than others?
Are very dense liquids thick or thin?
Objective Statement
Students will be able to grasp the idea of density.
Students will be able to define density.
Students will realize some liquids are heavier than other
liquids.
Transition
I will have the students go from one activity to the next
by calling them by tables.

PreAssessment of Students
Give the students a KWL chart about density to tell me
what they know or do not know about density.
Modeling of the Concept
Show the students a video with different liquids showing
that all liquids are not the same thickness (density).
Guiding the Practice

Give the students a KWL chart about density.

Go over what the students know or do not know about
density.
Show the students the video of different liquids.
Tell them that some liquids act different than other
liquids because of the difference in density.
Give them examples of some liquids that are thick and
thin and let them answer whether they are dense or not.
Call the students by table to gather around the table.
Get the vase out and the liquids that will be going into
the vase.
Pour about the same amount of each liquid into the
plastic cups.
Mix food coloring into the clear liquids so they can be
distinguished from water.
Start pouring the liquids into the vase, most dense to
least dense.
Discuss what happened in the experiment.
Give the students a lab sheet to complete.
Providing the Independent Practice
Each student will independently fill out the lab sheet.
