The Story of The Storytellers - The Gnostic Gospels - From Jesus To Christ - FRONTLINE - PBS

The document summarizes the discovery and contents of the Nag Hammadi texts, a collection of 52 Gnostic documents found in Egypt in 1945. It describes how an Arab peasant discovered earthenware jars containing papyrus texts in a cave. Some of the texts were lost, but what remained included gospels attributed to Thomas, Philip, and others, as well as texts like the Secret Book of James. These texts date back to the 2nd century AD and contain accounts of Jesus and his teachings that differ significantly from the New Testament. They include sayings attributed to Jesus and his followers, and present alternative stories like viewing the serpent in Eden positively rather than negatively. The discovery provided new insight into early Christian traditions
