ATTENTION: GRADE NINE a his year, as in others, you,- the new students, are being ziven a warm velcoue to our school (and now your school!) along with home- ork, Classwork, and extra-curric- uler activities you hove certain other resnonsibilities. .Une of the most importend is having oride in your school. Yu the ast tiree or four ye re school snirit in the Volieviste’ he dranned, decreased, been eliminated, or becone defunct;' whetever term you use, it boile down to the fact that it’ just isn't here enynore. During the summer your Student Sen- ate have been recking their brains trving to fueure out how to get stu- dents to nerticipate in some of these vctivities. ‘There is no way thot ve can force students to come out ond nley footboll, be a cheer- lesder, attend the games, or even join the Actors Guild. So we deci- Ged thot the best way to bring succ- Cress to St. 0.C.1.6V.5. is to let the students know what_ther can-do around the school and let them know how much fun there is waiting for them. At the oresent I'm not talkine to those who couldn't csre less and just come to school because they aeve to or because they want to meke trouble. These neonle any school can do without. But let's face it, there sre some, their numbers are few. n I talk sdout these peonle I talk from exnerience, because I was almost ar bad as one. shen T first came to this school, I skivpe¢ classed, forgot all about homework, caused Srouvle, end filled out aon- roximately twenty-five conéuct rep= orta(vou'll learn about these later) The next year it was just as bad; I still wes causing trouble and fil- ling out conduct reports. But this vest year with help of © couvle (7of vecchers I learned of fun to be ~had around the sciool in ways other then cutting uv. My behevior still lesives something to be desired(my conduct renorts were limited to This past year was the best year I have ever spent in school and I think this year is going to be even better. Let me tell you about a little of of last, year's fun, I started out the year by playing football. I'd always wanted to play because it has been a favourite sport of mine, but I vas always afraid of what other people would think. Besides, who has time for football when there are office detentions to go to. ‘Also, when I started all the other players looked about six foot two and seemed to weigh about two hundred pounds. This wasn't the case, It turned out that most of the other guys were just like me and even if we only won two games all year wo had a good time. This reminds me—when we started practices last year we had about fifty players out of a school of eight hundred students. I know that not everyone Likes or is able to play such sports but this small figure was ridiculous. And the same applied to the number of spectators. SOLUTION--YORE SCHOOL SPIRIT Last year was just great, and ny only regret is that I didn't start in grade nine. This is the whole point of writing this column--to tell you that there are plenty of vays to have fun around the school; plenty of sports activities; plenty of academic opportunities; and a variety of things to do which should please everyone. So don't be like me and wait two years to find this out. Go out now, participate in whatever you can, see what you can, and if you do, you and I and the whole school will have one S09! good time! ~Bob Grodesky P.S. Ask any seniour about 11F.
