1993-1994 ..

Sam's Third Annual End of the Year Spiel

I wonder why I always wait 'til a few days before the end of the year to write this thing in the last. Maybe that Procrastinator's Award is well

deserved, nah!

, "

':".'

With only a few: hours left.there are so many"thingsTClliketotell: each one of you, I mean, this has been one of the best years of my life and lowe it all to the wonderful friends that have been in my classes this year. I guess, "friends" might be too strong a word as a few of them put junk in my hair as I type this thing I

But seriously, there are so many wonderful people leaving me this year. I will , truly miss those of you who are leaving the alternative program. We have seven people graduating and so many more will be moving on to the Adult Ed program. Gosh how many of you have been here more than just this year?

We have developed wonderful relationships. I have this fear that once you go out the doors for the last time I'll never see you again. It's one of my (many?) faults that I can only care about a limited number of people at a time, After an, I'm just a male and I have a limited capacity for caring about people! That means next year's

, students will have my full attention - my heart. But, I promise that I will try to keep a place in there for all of you. One way for me to do that is by looking through this scrapbook every once in awhile,

I believe that I will always look at this year as the one in which I did a lot of things right. In c) asses we had some great discussions, even though there was always complaining about my topic of choice, I gave up even more control in my

" ....

classroom, which is really tough for me to do. T think it's part of my psychological makeup; to be a "control freak". Despite that weakness, I was able to give all of you a great deal of freedom. It made me nervous a lot of the time, but you almost never let me down. I want to thank you all for that.

I guess this year has been one of evolution for me.

Looking at that picture of me as a fresh faced, inexperienced teacher from three years ago, makes me realize even more how much I've grown. (Alright, no fat jokes there!! ') Of course when I look at that bearded guy, I wonder if there is some sort of weird reverse evolution! Looking at the animal kingdom section, I know that Beth might agree! Good grief, I wonder what I'll look like in three more years!

I know that it has been a year of evolution for

many of you as well. You have found your writer's voices again, in my English and Journalism classes and in the Creative Writing class. You've even managed to write about things that you hated, though I heard all of the complaints (Angie'). Some of you managed to make it to school on time, but the real shocker is that you would come to school on a weekend. You really are a bunch of hard workers! Please keep this attitude as you go on with the rest of your life.

For the few of you who will be back in the Alternative program, get new alarm clocks, will 'ya? For those of you who will be coming back to the Adult Program, I'll be happy to see you in the fall. But the big message goes to those of you who are graduating, I will miss you!

As I leave you for one last tune, let me add my usual request -- please stay safe!

1.) The lotus 123 video in computer class. The video was memorable to begin with. But it was even better when Allison would fast forward the tape when Sam would get up to help someone. When he sat back down to catch up he would be really lost. It was quiet amusing.

2.) When Allsion was making faces about Scott to Megan, when he was looking.

3.) The Wand Of Light.

4.) When Norma was supposedly stuck down in San Juan.

5.) Chris spinning plates on International day.

6.) When Kellie and Megan killed their cars on the same day.

7.) When Allison was winking at Joel and fell forward out of her chair.

8.) When Herb continuously fell out of his chair (Jay too).

9.) The making (and popping) of stress balls.

16.) Megan facing the wrong way during the eclipse and saying, "Mine won't work", about her eclipse viewer,

Sam has had a tough year, but here are just a few choice moments none will forget.. ....

1.) Allison pinching his butt, but it made it even better when he came in the next day and was complaining he had a bruise.

2.) This next one was even better, but unfortunately only a few people got to see it. Sam came into Laura's room looking for Allison. He wanted to ask her if she had written an article, the way he put it he basically accused her of copying it. Well he turned his back to Allison (big mistake Sam) and she winded up and smacked him. Sam must have jumped about 3 ft. Laura was sitting there and her mouth was on the ground with disbelief. All Sam could say was I can't believe you didn't warn me.

4.) Beth called him Mom.

5.) Kellie putting in the disk backwards.

11.) Locking Sam outside when he goes over to the store.

12.) Almost running Sam over with the car.

John Sidan!!e

John Sidange has conquered nearly every computer game that GLAE has to offer. His DOOM skills are still a little weak, but he's been training in Wolfenstein and hopes to defeat the demonic hordes soon.

Most likely to be a computer game tester.

Chris Cypher

Most likely to be bound and gagged by his teachers while friends and family take photographs.

Chris Cypher enrolled in the Alternative program in January, but immediately made an impression on everyone with his amiable personality. Of all students here, Chris may be the hardest to ignore. His skill for talking to anyone about everything has gotten him into trouble at times. He has become a fantastic care giver in GLAE's daycare. Perhpas it's his enormous amount of hyperactivity that helps him tire out the young children. Chris will be coming back to the Alternative program next year and Laura and Sam have already ordered a staight-jacket. Of course more duct tape will be ordered as well!

loves to spend quality time with her children.

Jeff mcmeeken

Most likely to become an underwear model and get the word "tweeked" put in the dictionary.

Jeff McMeekan might get the award for attending the most concerts this year. At least his taste in Music is pretty good, but who the heck is TOOL? He might not mean to be, but he has become the new class clown here at Alt Ed. He and Chris Cypher battled it for most confused, but he managed to "tweak out" the award.

We'd call him a heart throb after winning the category of Handsomest hands down, but it might go to his head!

lllhsun

mendoza

Most likely to get castration passed as punishment for failure to pay child support.

Allison is 18 years old and is the living proof that single teenage women can make good mothers. She has two kids, Aundrea and Taylor. She was born on January 20, 1976 in U.e.L.A. hospital in Orange County, CA.

She has four sisters and one brother. She now Eves in Lansing with her Mother, Step-father, one sister, and her brother.

She had worked at her dads construction company as a receptionist in California, "That Boutique" clothing store in Wisconsin, and Marti Walker in Lansing. But what she really wants to do when she graduates is go to L.e.e. for two years in radiology tech. training program.

Jenmfer

Howland

Most likely to bring back the Zoot Suit.

Jennifer Howland has been missing from action recently. With all of the responsibilities of being a young mom, she has done a remarkable job. Speaking of jobs, if you happen to see her at Foot Locker, say howdy. Her smile and ease have been missed, but we look forward to seeing her again soon.

My Autobiography

Most likely to become editor of the first male figure skater nudey magazine.

One summer morning in Lansing, MI I was born. It was July 17, 1976 ... 2 am. My parents Ruth and Clarence Jones, now had two children. A boy and a girl. As the story goes, my mom and dad chose the name Kellie, and Craig, my brother, picked my middle name. Somewhere, that 5 year old little boy saw a calendar, and even though it was July, he picked the name April for his baby sister.

Even though my parents divorced when I was very young, that last paragraph really tells how the rest of my life, so far, has been. My family is the most important thing in my life. I now have four brothers, but Craig is still my only biological brother. His three best friends, Ricky, Rudy and Jeff are also considered my brothers. J love all of them more than most little sisters love their brothers, and obviously, I'm not afraid to show it!

My Mom and Dad have also been very important to me. Without them, for one I wouldn't be here! Two, I wouldn't be who J am today. Ever since I was a little girl my Dad would take me to see broadway plays at MSU's Wharton Center, and on trips all over the place in the summer. My Mom on the other hand has been pretty much a full time Mom. She received custody of me and my brother and was the best Mom that she could have been.

Without getting too much into personal stories that will last for days, I can't tell much about my life! I went to 4 different elementary schools (Wood creek, Spartan Village, Kendon and Verlinden). Then, I went to Otto Middle School for three years. After that, I attended Sexton High School for close to three years (on and off) before coming to GLA.E.

I've always been shy, and I've always cared about people and animals. Right now, I have a small farm living at home. I have 6 cats (Tia, Bruce, Rudy, Klytus, Corky and the famous, Jean Claude [Or as Sam would like me to rename him, Jean Lue.]), and I have 4 dogs, (Morris, Samantha, Jermaine and Tyrone).

All in all, that's about it! Maybe I should have titled this "My Family" instead of "My Autobiography"!

nndrea

Heeney

Most likely to have her house declared an official zoo.

Andrea Keeney is a senior at Grand Ledge Alternative. She plans on going to college after she graduates. She feels that school is very important and that people should tade it more seriously.

Andrea's favorite past-times are to ride her horse "Red" and listen to all types of music. Her favorite groups range from Metallica & ACDC to Garth Brooks & The Eagles.

She loves to eat out. Her favorite food is chinese. Her favorite color is purple.

Andrea feels very strong on helping the homeless and belives that it is very important to recycle.

Helly

Hephart

Most Likely to kick some royal butt on Wall Street. (0.·, own a chain of Horrock's!)

Kelly Kephart has been with us for two years now.

When she started GLAE she was a tiny, meek person. She seemed afraid of every other person in the room. In time she learned to stand up for herself. Perhaps it was first having the courage to stand up to Sam and some of the

inj ustices she felt were going on. Later, she became a self confident woman with a new vision of her future. She sees herself in the big city, walking around in expensive business suits. She wants to become one of the world's movers and shakers. With her new found determination, she that's exactly what she will become. P.S. Kelly wrote an autobiography, however Sam seems to have misplaced it - though he's sure it's NOT lost.

Most likely to write a children's book called "Zombie Duck".

Lmton

Most likely to make a video called "Giggle Aerobics".

Autobiography

Well my name is Nichole Linton, I'm 18 years old, I'll be 19 years old April 29th. My hobbies are spending time with family and friends, excercising in my free time, and reading a good book every once and awhile, I also like to drive around on warm days, and go visit people, and get tan, go swimming, and plain out just have fun! I live on my own in Grand Ledge, which sometimes can be really, really boring, unless your the type to talk on the phone all of the time. I was born at St. Lawerance. I have one older sister which just turned 21 years old. My future plans are to graduate from high school, then go to cosmotology college and do hair and nails for a career. To take care of my daughter. Hopefully, move out into the country, someday in a house on some land!

I'm eighteen years old, and kind of certain about my future.

But two or three years ago I didn't know what I wanted to do, I would say I didn't care too much about my future, I was going do whatever came to me.

Now I'm graduating in June. After I graduate I'm gonna wait at least a year, to get ajob and save up money. Tben I'm gonna go to college and take nursing and Human services at LCC.

A couple years ago r just wanted to grow up, but now that I'm grown up and graduating, it get's harder and harder. You make more decisions, and they're harder than ever. Not just drugs, and drinking, it's getting a job, making money, raising a son by myself, etc. It's hard but can and is being done at the age of eighteen.

It is hard to be a single teenage Mom, some is peer pressure, and there's a lot of it.

There's a lot out there, and a lot to be done, nothing.is easy, but I always think about what I am going do in the future

so I can prepare for what I want to do.

Niki Schoonover

Most likely to start a tabloid magazine that exclusively covers 90210, Melrose Place, Nancy Kerrigan & Serial Killers.

My full name is Nicole Renee Schoonover. I was born on April 7th 1976 at Sparrow hospital in Lansing Michigan. Even though my name is nicole everyone who knows me calls me Niki. my mother choose my name because of a charector on the show The Young and The Restless. After I was born I lived in Lansing till I was almost 3 years old. My parents got devoriced when I was 2. Then my mom married my step-dad. He then adopted me when I was 4. When I was 3 we moved to East Lansing where I lived for almost 11 years of my life. I attended Wardc1iffElementry Schoool. I was held back in first grade there. I went to Kinawa Middle School for my sixth grade year. Then that summer I went to Florida for 2 weeks with my grandma. When I returned my Parents told me we were moving. Then we moved to G.L. I have lived here for almost 5 years.

Tim Mitchell

Most likely to own a Medic Alert Necklace. "I've fallen and I can't get

,II

up. Tim Mitchell is a sensitive guy who has always had trouble

getting to school. This year he has made enormous efforts to be a part of the Alternative Program despite a great deal of health problems. Many students will agree that Tim is a one of a kind friend who has time to talk to anyone (with the possible exception of his brother Tony - unless of course they are fighting!). This ability to communicate with everyone is great, but it sure upsets Sam and Laura to no end! Tim will be back in the program next year, so the teachers better rest well over the summer.

Jamie RYerson

Most Likely to start a dating service.

Jamie Ryerson started in the program last year, but because of various reasons she has left the program. Like her daughter Stephanie, she has a wonderful smile, but it is equally matched by her temper. She's one of the many students who can keep Sam on his toes.

Joel Whaley

Most likely to live on an indian reservation and be given the name "Dances with Dracula".

Oh what can we say about Joel?

Sure, he was voted Worst Potty Mouth, and sure, by the end of the year, he really wasn't enrolled anymore, but that doesn't mean that we don't like him! Joel is a funny, kind-hearted, tallented, and all around great guy. His articles for the first semester newspaper are proof that he's a great writer. Plus, if you ever read some of his other work, such as his poems, you know how much heart he puts into it. We've all missed Joel over the past semester, and hope that one day, he'll come back to GLAE.

Jennifer Penfield

Ansie Patrick

Most likely to become a lounge singer and have her own talk show (no guests, just her).

Where will I be without Alternative!?

Now that I'm a senior and I'm graduating in June I feel like a major chapter in my life is ending. I plan on going to college, but it is so much different than Alternative, and I'll really miss all the people here.

In April or May I plan on starting at Douglas J(cosmetology).

When I'm graduated from Douglas J I'll start working for my Aunt because she owns a nail salon and a hair salon. Then I can start L.C.C. in the fall and work my way through there for at least one year (if not two) then hopefully I can transfer to a college that I can major in advertising.

In ten years I hope to see myself as an executive in a major Advertising Agency. With a house on the beach, and a loving husband with one little girl and a boy on the way.

Most likely to be the first guest ever on Angie's talk show.

Jennifer is 17 years old. Her birthday is June 23rd, and she's looking forward to her 18th birthday. Jennifer just hopes to marry someday and eventually have six children. She lives in Lansing with her parents Diane and Craig. Jennifer has four dogs named Cozad, Sunny, Artchie, and Shelby. Her 2 cats are named Carly and Rusty. She has two beautiful horses.

Kevin Blankenship

Most likely to become a parole officer.

I was born in Lansing on Otober 9th, 1975. I've lived in Grand Ledge all of my life, and unfortionately I've also gone to Grand Ledge schools all of my life. I always got A's and B's all the way up to the end of my freshman year when I discovered that it was a lot more fun to hang out with friends than it was to go to school. I never got along with the jocks and preps very well, so by the end of the first qaurter of my sophmore year when I finally turned 16, I didn't waste any time dropping out. For the next few months, my life was nothing but a constant party, hanging out with friends and causing trouble. But then I ended up on probation, and my probation officer said I had to go back to school, so I came here. Now I'm getting ready to graduate and move on to college in the fall; all I have to do is decide what to study when I get there. I plan on moving in with my girlfriend Amanda and eventually getting married.

Beck)l Esch

Most likely to become a communist dictator.

Becky Esch is a graduating senior in the Alternative program. She's been here for a year and a half now, but it seems like decades! When she started in the program, she was shy and practically afraid of the rest of the students. Today however, she has taken on a role of leadership, whipping fellow students into shape. Not only was she a key member of this scrapbook staff, she was the chief editor of the Adult Ed newspaper. Perhaps her greatest achievement is keeping Sam in line. God knows he needed someone to do it!

Becky has made some wonderful friends here in the Alternative program. However, everything was not peachy keen. She was able to overcome a great many obstacles, both in her personal life and in her school life. She will be remembered as one of our programs finest graduates.

Rob Hanselman

Most likely to get an ERA amendment passed for men.

It all started on November 29, 1975. That was the day that I was born.

I was raised by my mother and father until I was six years old. Then my parents got a divorce. I lived with my morn for about a year after that. Then I moved back in with my father. I have lived with my father since then. I was his only child, he has done a good job raising me. We have had our share of troubles though. I have lived in Grand Ledge for most of my life. We moved here in 1978 when I was only three years old. I have always gone to Grand Ledge schools. Except for the year that I lived with my mother. I went to Greenwood elementary in my younger years. I then progressed into Beagle middle school. After I completed that, I went to the high school. I did not do to well there. I didn't like most of my teachers, and they didn't like me either. So with all of that pressure I quit school. When the next school year came around I got into the alternative program. I have enjoyed being a student of this school. I like to play with radio controlled cars as a hobby. I also like to play on my computer. I am going to be graduating this year. I plan on going to LCC and take classes in electronics.

Tim Hopkins

Most likely to make history with his weird haircuts.

Tim is 17 years old, his birthday is October 20. He likes to work on R.C. cars and play the guitar in his spare time. Tim plans on going into sharetime at L.e.e. He plans on going to college to study auto mechanics after he graduates from high school. Tim wants to restore vehicles for a living. He wants to open his own shop to restore and work on cars. Right now, Tim lives with his parents and his sister. Tim enjoys outside activities, such as hunting with a bow or gun. He wants to take a long vacation in Hawaii.

Megan Kressler

Most likely to become a Baggage Claim Attendant. "Yes Maam, I'm sure that your bag isn't in my folder!"

Megan Kressler is the slug who should have been typing this instead of me.

Ja)1 linn

Most likely to check into the Betty Ford Clinic for being a sipa addict.

Jay Linn entered the program second semester.

Since then we've noticed his fascination with astrology. Does anyone else clip their horoscope out of the news paper each and every day? I don't think sol His knowledge of Native American culture is impressive as well. For fun, jay hangs out at Burger King. He says he works there, but we think he just likes to wear the cool uniforms.

Beth Babbitt

Most likely to be arrested for barking at strangers in Central Park.

Beth is 18 years old. She was born on April 28, 1976.

Beth likes alternative better because there is more freedom. Beth is a senior and will be graduating this year. When she graduates she would like to go to collage at L.C.C. Beth is a very outgoing and understanding person.

Jacob Bartholomew

Most likely to do cartoon voice overs.

This is my life not much of one yet but I am still young and I have many more goals ahead of me. Ever since I

was a little kid I always wanted to play sports. I think as a kid 1 had a lot of problems I used to move all the time from state to state. I never yet had the chance of playing sports in a school. I did join a church soccer team when my partents lived together. When they had the divorce my mom moved to Nevada with my brother and sisters.

I never had much chance of joining sports in NJvada .I was usually taking care of my brother and sister while my mom was at school. I lived in Nevada for only one year. Then I moved to California, I didn't have much schooling from travling so much.

I was on the basketball team for a while until I moved to Hawaii. This was one of the most best places 1 have ever lived. It has warm water and warm air all of the time, another thing that I liked was that it never snowed.

There are lots of good looking women over there. I didn't' do much sports over in Hawaii unless you include surfing and skate boarding. But it wasn't like organized sports. Now since the divorce I have been away from my dad for five years. So I called him up and told him I wanted to move back to Michigan.

When I lived in Charllotte, and Grand Ledge, I had many troubles in Charllotte like being on probation and going in and out of jail. The most thing I enjoyed being in Charllotte was the partying and being on the basketball team. Till I moved to Grand Ledge I never joined and sports. Sports are fun active and good for excersize. I thought playing sports for money was the most exelent job to do. I dont think that goal will come true through any more because I don't stick to what I want to do. Since I have been in Grand Ledge its been four years since I have seen my brothers and sister. I plan on seeing them in the summer. My life ain't over yet so I think I can accomplish some of my goals.

Most likely to run Disney World and rent out CindcrcJla's castle.

school. I own a 73 ford van with a v8. I like cats and

horses and the country. I also think family is very important. I like cars a lot. I have a lot of friends that like cars too.

Tami is a 17 year old senior. She was born August 1, 1976. After she graduates she wants to go to college. She enjoys coming to alternative becouse it is easier for her than the high school. She also enjoys the people here.

Tami has a fiance named Greg Scarborough, they plan to get married in three years. They are parents of a baby boy named Travis. Tami has a dog named Peaches and likes to sleep when she has spare time.

I'm going to school at Grand Ledge Alternative as a freshman. I have a baby boy named Christopher Allen Montgomery. Who was born July 5, 1993. I am now dating one of the best men in the world, Tim Hopkins.

I live at home right now, but I plan to move out within the next 3 years.

My dreams for the future are to have a good paying job that I like. To be married by the time I'm 25 and to have a baby girl by the time I'm 35.

I think the worst part of the trip would have to have been waking up at quarter to six and trying to stay awake in the shower. Plus, I was in such a rush to make it to school by seven that 1 didn't even stop and pick up breakfast. Then we didn't even leave the school until 7:46 because Andrea's alarm didn't go off and so she was late.

Once we got going they started to hand out doughnuts and orange juice, and started the movie (Mrs. Doubtfire), and it was a pretty smooth ride from there. Except for the seats were too close together so there was no leg room and the guy kept turning the air conditioning

on and everybody was freezing. But the movie was cool and the riding part wasn't bad especially after we got past the cigarette break.

Once we got to the Oceanarium we were left to go roam around the building, and I have to say that I thought this was going to be dumb, but it was pretty interesting. I really liked the dolphins and the penguins. I thought the show could have been a little bit longer and have some more tricks with the dolphins, but other than that [ thought that

everything was set up really cool and the food there wasn't that bad.

After we left the Oceanarium we went to Grant Park to eat lunch. That area of the park was kind of small and Andrea, Allison, Tara, and I took a walk around the area. It was probably as big as Oak park but not as wide, but the park itself was scattered all over different b locks, and in a different area of the park it had the fountain from the beginning of "Married with Children" .

After we ate we headed to the theater to see "The Phantom of the Opera". The theater itself was really awesome. It was beautiful. Our seats were on the top balcony, talk about tons of stairs to climb! When we finally got seated (which took forever because nobody was sitting were they were supposed to) the show began and it was cool how they could have so many cool special affects on a stage. At intermission Tara, Andrea, and I were going out to smoke a cigarette when Andrea started feeling really sick (she had not felt good all day) so Tara, and I took her to the bathroom so she could lie down on the couch in there, and that is were Tara, and I spent the rest of the play chatting while Andrea laid down and rested.

Once the play got over with we all headed back to the bus so the bus driver could transport all of us to downtown for some good old American shopping, but poor little Andrea spent the rest of the night on the bus sleeping her tummy ache away. So

Allison, Tara, and I decided to hit the drug store first to pick up Andrea some medicine, and Allison some film, and me some cigarettes. Then we went to do some serious shopping, but then we fell into some trouble. There was no good gift shops that were in our price range. All the shops were in the

range of $300 purses to $800 for sundresses. So we didn't really buy anything until we got to the Hard Rock Cafe and boy did the money fly from there. The Hard Rock cafe was cool, but I definitely don't think the food was worth the money we paid, but

the inside was pretty cool and there was lots to look at. After stuffing our faces we finished shopping at the restaurant, and headed on down to "Planet Hollywood" (the gift shop part) which basically was the same thing as the Hard Rock Cafe except everything said Planet Hollywood were Hard Rock Cafe was.

I'd have to say the best part of the whole trip would have to be when we all went shopping because we really got to explore the town and there were some pretty hilarious sights not to mention the people that were in this city. Not all of the people

were strange, but they did have there share of off the wall people. For instance you could ask Chris Cypher and the group of people he was with when they saw a lady walk across the middle of a busy intersection screaming at the top of her lungs, or the drunk guy that almost ran into Andrea on our way back to the bus after the play, or you could ask Marsha about the guy who got arrested for shining her shoes.

Then it was time to leave The Windy City and start our long trip home. Which I don't remember much of that cause I fell asleep even before we got out of Chicago, and didn't wake up until we hit Grand Ledge, but from what I've heard they played the movie "Cool Runnings", and everyone liked it.

All and all I'd give this trip a thumbs up, and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to get out of town and spend some money, but do make sure you bring plenty of money if you want to buy anything.
