WEEKLY OVERVIEW: Week 1
Overview of Week One: Preparing for your Role in the Classroom as a Paraprofessional
This course is designed to help you understand the expectations and role of a paraprofessional in the
classroom. There are some basic concepts and some more technical aspects that would help you during the
process. What is the reason parapros are needed in the classroom? Why is it important to know what you can
offer students? Let the journey begin.
Some of the questions we will be answering over the next eight weeks are as follows:
So what is a paraprofessional? What role do they play in the classroom? What are some attributes a
paraprofessional needs to have to be successful? What are some of the regulations that govern
paraprofessionals?
The purpose to have a paraprofessional in the classroom for the teacher:
Assist with setting up the classroom, grading homework/assignments/test, help with classroom management,
supervise children on field trips or other activities
For the student:
Support the student, give one-on-one attention, and provide instructional reinforcement,
Paraprofessionals have to have the some basic attributes to be successful. This includesethical reasoning
abilities, compassion, helpful nature, conduct themselves in a professional manner, have good communication
skills, and enjoy working with others.
Confidentiality is very important within the educational system. The Family Educational Rights and
Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student
education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S.
Department of Education.

Explain and examine the role of a paraprofessional in schools

What can I do to communicate effectively with my teacher(s) and others?
