Effects of Social Media on a Teenagers Self-Esteem

Thesis Statement: Although social media serves as an avenue for ideal self-presentation, it can still have
a negative impact on a teenagers self-esteem in the psychological, emotional, and sociological aspects.

Outline
I. Introduction
A. Social media is a form of elctronic communication through websites that offer
multiple opportunities for online communities to partake in providing information,
thoughts, opinions, and other content (Okeeffe & Clarke-Pearson, 2011).
B. Self-esteem is a person's general emotional assessment of his or her own worth
(Monbourquette, 2008).
C. The psychological aspects deals with anything related to an individuals mind
(Merriam-webster, 2015).
D. The emotional aspect focuses on the emotions or feelings of people (Pertierra, 2013).
E. The sociological aspect talks about society and social relationships (Garcia, 2013).

II. Social media is a form of communicating electronically through websites that offers multiple
opportunities for online communities to partake in providing information, thoughts, opinions,
and other content (Okeeffe & Clarke-Pearson, 2011).
A. Social media sites include facebook, twitter, instagram, snapchat, and more.
B. The various social networking sites have features such as liking and commenting on
ones post or photo.
C. Social media also connects people all around the world through its efficient features.

III. Self-esteem is a person's general emotional evaluation of his or her own worth
(Monbourquette, 2008).
A. Self-esteem is a concept that can depend on the positive feedback coming from others
and ones self. It is the way people respect themselves.
B. Social media can affect how one views themselves because their perspectives are
affected by the online communitys opinions.
IV. The psychological aspects deals with anything related to an individuals mind (Merriam-
webster, 2015).
A. The way a person thinks is affected by the way others think.
B. Social media can alter ones mindset due to the attention and standards set by the
netizens.

V. The emotional aspect focuses on the emotions or feelings of people (Pertierra, 2013).
A. Teenagers have hormones that add to the pressures of social media regarding the ideal
self-presentation.
B. A teenagers way of thinking influences their emotions. Social media can either make
them feel insecure or superior.

VI. The sociological aspect talks about society and social relationships (Garcia, 2013).
A. Social media can make a teenager anti-social due to their emotional and
psychological state of mind of having a low self-esteem.

VII. Studies/evidences on the effect of social media on a teenagers self-esteem.


A. Gonzales and Hancocks (2011) study focuses on a specific social networking site, which
is facebook, and its impact on self-esteem.
B. Sarmientos (2013) paper targets the masses regarding heterotopia and emphasizing
femininity through media.
