Greece
Greece is a beautiful, interesting country
located in southern Europe. Greece is credited with
the evolution of Western civilization. It is the
birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, the
Olympic Games, Western literature, and political
science. Greece is also known for the helping in
the discovery of major scientific and mathematical
principles and Western drama. Greece has a rich,
historic history.
Greece is over 5600 years old; the first
civilization was on the island of Crete. As the
country grew people moved to the mainland.
Greek cities were built and Greek colonies were
started outside of Greece. Macedonia and Rome
invaded Greece, but during the Middle Ages once
again, Greece became its own country. Later
Greece was taken over by the Ottoman Empire,
which today is Turkey.
Finally, Greece gained its official independence
in 1834. Today Greece is home to 11,030,000
people. The capital is Athens, and the people
speak Greek. Most of the traditional food is made
from vegetables, oil, and flatbread.
Traditional Greek clothing is made of cotton
and is very ornate. Most traditional clothing is
made in colors of red, black, and blue. Greeks
were traditional clothing at cultural festivals.
The primary religion is Greek Orthodox, which
celebrates many holidays. Greek Orthodox
celebrates Christmas on January 6. Other major
holidays include National Day on March 25, and
Labor Day on May 3.
Greeks have a high standard of living. The
country has a large tourism industry. It is one of
the most visited countries in Europe. The people of
Greece have a high quality of life.
Greece is an ancient country with thousands of
islands with breathtaking beaches located in the
Aegean and Ionian Seas. It is a highly influential
country with many ancient landmarks. Greeces
ancient cultures still live on with its people and
traditions.
