Dear Sir/Mdm,
Who are we?
We are a group of Secondary 2 students from Cedar Girls Secondary School. Currently we
wish to carry out a VIA (values-in-action) project, in relation to our Social Innovation Day in
Cedar (25 May 2016). The objective of our project is to raise the younger generations
awareness about the hawker culture in the past.
Our group, consisting of Crystal Loh, Nicole Poh, Nadhira and Peace Tan, would like to work
with your organisation for our project. We hope to raise awareness about Singapores hawker
culture to the 6 year old children at Cherie Hearts Little Angels Pte Ltd.
What are we planning to do?
We wanted to carry out this project at your centre because we feel the need for younger
generations of Singaporeans to understand about Singapores past and appreciate our heritage.
Due to advancement in technology, past methods used of cooking and selling may not be used
anymore and the newer generations are not able to experience it. One such example is the
hawker culture in Singapore. The work hawker suggest a person who travels from place to
place to sell items. In the past, the hawker will move around selling their goods. They would
travel from place to place to sell their goods using a bicycle or a push cart. However, what we
see in the present day hawker which is situated at a fixed stall selling their food. Hence, we feel
that it is important for us to educate the children more about Singapores hawker culture, as time
passes, the traditional culture of Singapore would be slowly forgotten. Our group is focusing on
the dessert stalls in Singapore, thus we will speak in depth about the dessert stalls and desserts
that were common in the past.
Rationale of our programme
As children get bored easily, our group feels the importance to keep the children engaged.
Hence, during our visit there, we would have engaging activities such as coloring and connect-
the-dots activities to enable the children to guess and familiarise themselves with different
desserts. These activities also encourage interaction among their peers, which will further
enhance their learning process. Additionally, we will have our own hoop the dessert game
where we will have after our presentation. A treasure hunt will also be held.
Our group strongly believes that colouring of desserts such as ice kachang will allow the
children to explore their creativity and develop them to be more innovative as ice kachang is an
example of a colourful dessert. The children can make use of the colour pencils or crayons to
colour the various desserts.
Our Plan
Our own hoop the dessert game will be played after our presentation. This will attract the
children to listen to our presentation as the information provided in the presentation would help
them to answer the questions in the game. Hence, whenever a dessert hooped by a ring, the
child has to answer the question with regards to our presentation and if they answer correctly,
they will get a gift in return.
In the mini treasure hunt game, our group aims to ensure that the children are able to recognise
the various desserts sold in the past. The children would be split up into groups to find the
hidden pictures of desserts they are assigned to. The group which accomplishes the task first
will be rewarded. Nevertheless, the other participating groups will walk away with further
knowledge of the desserts that were popular in the past. Through this activity, we hope to
facilitate teamwork among the children.
In our last activity, we would be using the information collated after interviewing the teachers-in-
charge as well as conducting undisturbed observations. We would build up and design an
activity according to the needs of your kindergarden.
When are we planning to do our project in the organisation?
We hope to visit during the June holidays. We hope that we could visit your childcare centre for
three hours. When we are there, we will definitely observe our behaviour and would make sure
not to interrupt or cause any inconvenience. Please find this proposed schedule below.
