1.3. System Components

1.3.1.Transport and Storage
Geberit MapressCuNiFe system pipes and pressfittings must be protected against dirt and damage in transit and while
being stored. Mapress pipes are factory sealed with plugs.
The pressfittings are packed in practical plastic bags in the factory. To prevent contamination components should not
be removed from packaging or plastic plugs removed until immediately prior to installation.

1.3.2.Technical data for MapressCuNiFe system pipe

Geberit MapressCuNiFe system pipe is provided in diameters from 15 to 108 mm. It is seamlessly drawn from the
copper-nickel alloy CuNi10Fe1.6Mn (material number 2.1972.11) and conforms to the requirements of DIN 86019 and
BWB material performance sheet WL 2.1972. It also meets the finish and dimensional accuracy requirements of a
Geberit Mapress factory standard.
For technical reasons the use of other pipes is not permitted.
Geberit Mapress CuNiFe system pipes are commercially available in 6 m lengths.

Ferrous sulphate treatment

Ferrous sulphate treatment can be used as a method to
encourage good initial protective surface film formation
during commissioning. At first the system can be filled
with fresh water containing 5 p.p.m. ferrous sulphate and
left in the system for 1 day. After this initial treatment
ferrous sulphate (5 p.p.m. concentration) should be
added to the system and recirculated for 1 hour per day
throughout the fitting out period until being replaced by
seawater.

NaDDTC treatment
German Naval shipbuilders use the additive NaDDTC
(Natriumdiethyldithiocarbamate) for protective surface
film formation. NaDDTC is dissolved in fresh water and
added in a dosage of 0.05 up tp 0.07 %. The pipe
system is filled with NaDDTC solution and must run
circulating a minimum of 24 hours. Within this time the
protective surface film is composed. Subsequent the
NaDDTC solution must be changed to oxygenated
seawater or fresh water until final use of seawater when
available.

2.4. Heat dissipation

2.4.1.Heat emmission, general
In addition to transporting the heat conveying medium (water, steam etc.), pipes also emit heat due to physical laws.
This effect can also be reversed.
Pipes can therefore be used for heat emission (floor heating, heating ceilings, heating walls etc.) and also for absorbing
heat (cooling water systems, concrete core activation, geothermal heat storage etc.).

2.4.2.Heat emission Geberit MapressCuNiFe

Calculative determination of the heat emission

The calculative determination of the heat emission comprises the following steps:
Calculation of the thermal transfer coefficient kr
Calculation of the thermal emission QR

Calculation of the thermal transfer coefficient kr

General calculation
Assumptions for general calculation:
Surface-mounted
Stationary air
The thermal transfer coefficient kr will be determined in the general calculation with the following formula:

k r = ---------------------------------------------------------------------
1 1 da 1
------------ + ---------- ln ----- + ---------------
i di 2 di d
a a

i: Heat transfer coefficient, inside [W/(m2K)]

: Thermal conductivity [W/(mK)]
Values for MapressCuNiFe:
i = 23.2 W/(m2K)
a = 8.1 W/(m2K)
= 50 W/(mK)

Simplified calculation
Assumptions for the simplified calculation:
Surface-mounted
Stationary air
Radiation not taken into account
The thermal transfer coefficient kr will be calculated in the simplified calculation with the following formula:

k r = ---------------

a: Heat transfer coefficient, outside [W/(m2K)]

Values for MapressCuNiFe:

a = 8.1 W/(m2K)

Calculation of the thermal emission QR

The thermal emission is determined with the following formula:

QR = ( Ti Ta ) kr

QR: Heat flow for 1 m pipe [W/m]

k r: Heat transfer coefficient [W/mK]
T i: Water temperature in the pipe
Ta: Room temperature
