’A few yoars ago when | was working on the 100 years Hong Kong Architecture project
by the Hong Kong Insttute of Architects and studying my Master degres in architectural
Conservation I stated to know more of our herstage buildings. But | knew litte on who were the
‘architects of those buldings. The information scattered in dferant sources. There is no special
study cn archtacs in Hong Kang from 1841 to 1841. wanted to find out the name of architects
‘who had controuted tothe development of our cy Relating them back to cur historical buikings
‘ether demoished or not. Even though majority of them might not desian great buildings, they were
par of ourhstory In this cannaction, this article is focus onthe names of architects 2
tolimited time and resource, there must ba erors and inadequacy that needs further veriaion

Architects In Private Practice 1841-1902
Bojore Bish came to Hong Kang in 1841, there were no people with a tle of “architect” in Hong
Kong. The frst nama appeared as architect is Fe Langer. He came from Calcutta in 1842 to work
for derdines o pian and eunerise the erection of ther rst large warehouse at East Point. But he
Jed on 30 October 1642, about two months afer his anval in Hong Kong. The second name of
architec s Rowland Rees. His nam is found withthe tite of architect n the 1846 ctrecton,
Rowland Rees was a Wer Office Engineer He was activa involved inthe miesionary work of Un

William Satway (1844-1902, FIBA 1874), the founder of Palmer & Turner, arved in Hong Kong
and starte his private practoe in 1868. Wilberforce Wilson (CE) jones Savay in 1870 and
they were in partnership to form Wilson & Salway in 1872. Wison anived in Hong Kong 1853

Palmer. The Hongkong and Shanghal Bank 1886 (Fig) was Palmers fst bulking designed in

In 1873, He worked as Clerks of Works in Surveyor-General’s Office. Hs hed partnership with
Granville Sharp (1825-1899) to orm Sharp & Danby in 1874 when ne was sil working for
the government. Danby left the goveerment in 1879.
‘Sharp was an accountant and slarted as a banker, He expanded his business in property
