Architects In Private Practice 1841-1902 Bojore Bish came to Hong Kang in 1841, there were no people with a tle of “architect” in Hong Kong. The frst nama appeared as architect is Fe Langer. He came from Calcutta in 1842 to work for derdines o pian and eunerise the erection of ther rst large warehouse at East Point. But he Jed on 30 October 1642, about two months afer his anval in Hong Kong. The second name of architec s Rowland Rees. His nam is found withthe tite of architect n the 1846 ctrecton, Rowland Rees was a Wer Office Engineer He was activa involved inthe miesionary work of Un Church, The thea one is George Strachan. His names found inthe same directory He also ‘appeared in a government record 1645 as “architect of Vietria, Hong Kong". Strachan was the ‘rasan of the Government House when he was warkhg in Surveyor-Genera’s Office before ‘B44, He also designed the Hong Kong Club 1846 (Fgh ‘Thos. W. Kingsmill (Thomas Wiliam Kingsmll1837-1910}Fig.2)'s found in the 1862 directory. 4e went to China before 1858 and practiced in Shanghai with Whitfield as * Whitfield & Kingsmi ‘eatly 12603. Most of his time was practising in China. He was the frst president ofthe Society of Engneers and Architects in Crina. 8.B. Rawling (Sernuol Batt Raving) and Storey & SSon are found inthe 1884 cactory C.H.Storey ( Storey & Sons found as acvl engineerin the ‘same directory. He was an assistant enginoar in Surveyor-General’s Oca ftom 1862 to 1863, S.B, Rawling was an assistant engineer for Water Works 1862 -63. His name is eso found inthe 1867 directory. The Cec Tower 1883 (Fig.3) stuated atthe junction of Padder Street anc Quosn's FRoad was designed by Rawlings & Co. He was the architect ofthe City of Malcourn Corperation for Market Buildings from 1883, Sotheby Biel became parner from 1681 to 1890. The name of the frm was en changed to Wilson & Bird. Under the new name of practice, Beaconstiad Arcade 1880 (Fig6) and St. Joseph 's English College 1881 were completed. Wison retired in 1881. Clement Palmer (1857-1952, RIGA 1882, Authorized Architect 1903-04, partnar af Bird & Palmer and PPaimer & Tumor 1883-1907) Fig, 7) joined the company in 1882 and became pertner of Bird & Palmer. The Hongkong and Shanghal Bank 1886 (Fig) was Palmers fst bulking designed in org Kong. The other projects comelated inthis period were Alloa Memorial Hospital 1837, PEO uldng 188) avernment House Annexe 1890. Bd retired in 1880, Arthur Turner (VICE Authorized Architect 1903-12 and 1916, PAT partner 1891-191 1)Fig 9) artved in HK 1883 ana ame partner after Birds retirement. The firm became Palmer & Turner (P&T) which sill ‘xs today, In this paved of time, some famous buldings were completed such as Netharsole Hospital 1803, Charred Bank 1898, Hong Kong Club 1897 Fig. 10), Former British Schoo, sloon 1902 and Mountain Lodge 1902 Wiliam Danby ( 1842-1908, MICE, Authorized Architect 1903-08)Fg.11)arved in Hong Kong In 1873, He worked as Clerks of Works in Surveyor-General’s Office. Hs hed partnership with Granville Sharp (1825-1899) to orm Sharp & Danby in 1874 when ne was sil working for the government. Danby left the goveerment in 1879. ‘Sharp was an accountant and slarted as a banker, He expanded his business in property Jevoiopments. He was the donor of Matica Hospital in memory of his wife Matida. Sharp nd Danby separated in 1881 and the fim became Sharp & Go. Darky had parinership with Robert Kennaway Leigh (MICE, Authorized Architect 1903-04) to form Damby & Leigh 09 «before 1882.
