Unit Plan- The Civil War Period- 2/27-3/6

Standards:
VUS.7 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the Civil War and Reconstruction Era and
their importance as major turning points in American history by
- evaluating the multiple causes of the Civil War, including the role of the
institution of slavery as a principal cause of the conflict;
- identifying the major events and the roles of key leaders of the Civil War Era,
with emphasis on Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee,
and Frederick Douglass;
- analyzing the significance of the Emancipation Proclamation and the principles
outlined in Lincolns Gettysburg Address;
Objectives:
- Students will be able to identify the sectional differences between the North and
the South.
- Students will be able to determine the importance of the Election of 1860.
- Students will be able to influence of slavery.
- Students will be able to determine the cause and order of secession from the
Union.
- Students will learn about the first shots of the Civil War.
- Students will be able to accurately describe camp life and warfare tactics used
during the Civil War.
- Students will be able to determine the two turning points of the war. (Gettysburg
and Vicksburg)
- Students will be able to acknowledge the importance of the Emancipation
Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address.
- Students will be able to characterize important figures in the Civil War Period. (i.e
Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Stonewall Jackson, George Pickett, Joshua L.
Chamberlain.)
Materials:
- Students will need book and notebook everyday. We will look at pictures in the
book to show demonstrations. Students will also need guided notes(I will provide).
Students will need colored pencils. (I will provide) I will need a computer each day, we
will show video clips from the Civil War. Students will need Civil War project worksheet.
Students will need handout on songs of the war.
