The document is a rationale statement by Ashley Roman for an artifact created for an education course. The artifact is a welcome letter for parents on the first day of school that relates to Standard 10 about teachers seeking leadership roles and collaborating with others. The letter notifies parents that assessments will determine grades but homework is not mandatory, ensuring student needs outside of school are met. Creating the letter required taking the perspective of a parent to learn what information should be included about the class and teacher. Standard #10 Leadership & Collaboration:

The teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for

student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school

professionals, and community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the

profession (Professional Development in New Jersey, 2014, p. 13).

Date of Completion: April 20, 2017

Course Completed in: EDUC 230-01 Education Field Experience

This artifact is a welcome letter that is to be sent home with parents on the first day of

school, or sent out prior to school starting. This artifact specifically relates back to Standard

10.i.10, The teacher advocates to meet the needs of learners (Professional Development in

New Jersey, 2014, p. 13). Standard 10.i.10 focuses on the teacher meeting the needs of students.

In the welcome letter, parents are notified that assessments will be used to comprise a grade;

however, homework is not mandatory. This ensures that the needs of the students outside of

school are met as well. In terms of in school needs, students will be able to explore mathematics

through various methods.

As a future teacher, creating this welcome letter was rather tough. In order to create this

letter, I had to take on the perspective of a parent with a child in school. I sought out help from

my neighbor who had shown me a few of his sons first grade welcome letters. In examining

those, I learned I needed to add a bit about the entire class as well as myself. The overall result in

doing so was a welcome letter that promotes what will occur within the course as well as a brief

introduction as to who I am.

In the future, I intend to refer back to my welcome letter for support. I particularly found

the set-up to be the most useful tool. I first listed out what I wanted to incorporate into the letter

and then expanded upon each topic. I intend on referring back to my welcome letter for future

reference in terms of structure and support. The welcome letter features a structure I find

organized.
