The havelis of Jaipur bring together all that was excellent
in Rajput and Mughal architecture to create a new
tradition. The private wings of the family extended to
their entertainment areas. Since defence was no longer a
primary concern, larger and more ornamental windows
were built to overlook the streets or courtyards outside
these private wings. Gardens were no longer planned only
within the internal courtyards, but were added to the
external paranoma. There were water canals and
fountains just like in Mughal palaces and gardens. As
Jaipur did not possess its own marble quarries,a major
distinguishing feature of the Mughal architecture was the
use of marble inlay works. Jaipur used marbles judiciously
,but was able to achieve the marble effect on polished
wall surfaces through a style that was referred to as
arayish. Rather than stone inlay,it preferred the delicate
art of painting, especially religious and historical

sequences, the depiction of which is forbidden in Islamic
art. The concept of sheesh mahal was equally favoured in
both architectural traditions.
The climate was essentially hot and dry. Days were hot
and dry and at the same time early mornings and
evenings were pleasant. So ,activities were carried out in
open areas during morning and evening while during the
day they were performed in shaded areas. Courtyards,
jharokhas and chadanis provided proper ventilation inside
the haveli. Due to harsh climatic conditions, the windows
were small and few in number. Windows normally became
a part of an ornamental panels on walls or were
surrounded with jaalis in the jharokha. Large surfaces
around the openings were created to manage the
geometrical sub divisions of the surface of the facade. The
faade surrounding the court were as elaborate as the

external facade, as they indicated the economic and social
status of the owner. The chowk connected the spaces
horizontally and vertically. The plan organization became
more open on the upper floors than on the ground floor.
Ornamentation had always been a part of Rajasthans
architectural heritage. With the evolution of design,
elements also evolved. Mughal-influenced motifs like
flowers and vines were used frequently. Not only
appearance but also the basic colours changed. Paintings
on walls and ceilings became intense richer with the
development of new colours, specially Jaipur
