Activity Description

Okay class, so the past few days Mrs. Hemric has been teaching you all
about maps and globes. We have learned what the differences and
1. Focus and Review
similarities are between them. We also have learned very important
10 points vocabulary such as compass rose and map key, both of which will help us
with what we are about to do today!
2. Statement of Objective
Today we will make a map of the classroom and successfully be able to
for Student locate places or items around the classroom.
10 points
We have learned a whole lot about maps in the past few days. We have
even seen many examples of different types of maps. Who can remind me
what a map key is? (a map key is the part of the map that tells you what
everything is) Exactly, the map key is like your instructions telling you what
to do and how you can read the map. Now who can tell me what a compass
3. Teacher Input rose is? (the thing that tells you the direction) Yes, a compass rose tells you
10 points which way is north south east and west. And who thinks they know what a
symbol is? (something that stands for something) Good! A symbol is a mark
or picture that lets you know what something is. All the symbols can be
found on our map key. Now Im going to read you a book. We will read Me
on the Map.

4. Guided Practice Now we have seen how students like you can make maps. How
10 points about we make our own maps today? We should make a map about
something we all know really well does anyone have any ideas?
(listen to given ideas) We all know our classroom very well right?
Lets make a map of the classroom!! (places outline of a classroom
up on the board) Here is an outline of our classroom, what do we
think this part is? (pointing to the opening of the door) Yes, those are
the doors. Let me go ahead and label them. And what about these?
What do we think these are? (pointing to the windows) Perfect those
are our windows. Let me label those too. Now what other things do
we think are pretty important in our room? (looking for answers like
the carpet, book library, kidney table, desks, rocking chair, computers,
cubbies, bathroom) (I will have precut pieces of construction paper to
make all of our symbols as well as ones for the map key) I will
continue to ask student what is important in our room and continue
designing the room that way. Now that our map is complete lets talk
about how we can find where things are! We can use our compass
rose to help us figure out what direction to go to get to something. If
we were on our carpet, what direction would we have to go to get to
our tables? (North) Now if we were at our main door how would we
get to our calendar? (North then West) Do you see how we can use
our compass rose to tell us what direction to go?
Okay boys and girls we have made a classroom together I want you to go
back to your desks and make one yourself! I have given you a copy of the
5. Independent Practice classroom map as well as a sheet with things for you to cut out. Cut and
10 points paste the pictures where they go on your map. I will be walking around to
answer any questions you may have. I will leave my class map up on the
board for you to use as reference.

6. Assessment Methods of I will take up the students worksheet to use as an assessment. I am looking
all objectives/skills: for items to be cut and pasted in the general proper area. The worksheet will
10 points be out of 20 points.

Now we have all made our very own map of the classroom, wasnt that fun!
We saw today that you can make a map of practically anything to allow for
7. Closure someone else to understand what is going on and what is important where.
Can anyone give me directions from one part of the classroom to another?
10 points
How can we get from our computers to our book library? ( North then East
then West) What do you think you can make a map of next?

This section is not completed unless the lesson plan has been
implemented.
Measure how well students were able to achieve the performance/criteria
8. Assessment Results of
from the daily lesson objective.
all objectives/skills: What percentage of your students achieved mastery (as outlined in your criteria)?
10 points Based on student performance, what strengths do students exhibit in regards to the
expected performance (as outlined in the daily lesson objective)?
For students who did not achieve mastery, what kinds of errors did they make?

Most of my students have a difficult time drawing or For a small group lesson, I could do more of a centers
writing out works because they are not confident. For rotation style. I would have removable tape to create the
higher students I can have them draw and label rather classroom in a small group setting. Then another center
than cut and paste. would be creating a map of the classroom by themselves,
a center for creating a map of anything they want (like in
Me on a Map), the final center will be a treasure hunt to
find things hidden in the classroom.
