Column Coupler Design Analysis

This document summarizes the design of a column coupler for a 800mm x 800mm column subjected to an axial load of 4270kN and bending moments. The column is classified as a short column based on its dimensions and effective length. The required steel area is calculated as 12,938mm^2. The document checks the interaction of the axial load and bending moments against code requirements and determines that the column needs to be redesigned.

Coupler Design for Column: (for Axial Force corresponding to maximum Moment)

Size of Column 800 mm x 800 mm (b x D)

Concrete Grade 35 N/mm2 , Steel Grade 500 N/mm2

Unsupported Length, lu = 8070 mm

Effective Length for Bending Parallel to Larger Dimensions, l e 6456.0
= mm

(Load Case 805) STAAD Model between Grid 8 to 15 ULS

Axial Load, Pu (kN) = 4270
Moment in the direction of Larger dimension (Top) (kNm) = 4270 X 0.04 443
Moment in the direction of Larger dimension (Bott) (kNm) = 4270 X 0.04 171 from
STAAD
Moment in the direction of Shorter dimension (Top) (kNm) = 135 X 13.20 1494
Moment in the direction of Shorter dimension (Bott) (kNm) = 290 X 13.20 171

le / D = 8 <12 - Short Column

le / b = 8 <12 - Short Column Therefore the Column is Short

ex = lu / 500 + D / 30 = 43 mm > 20mm therefore ex = 43 mm, and Mex = 183 kNm

ey = lu / 500 + b / 30 = 43 mm > 20mm therefore ey = 43 mm, and Mey = 183 kNm

Assume 20 - T 29 + 0 - T 25 with 50 mm cover and 12 mm links

Therefore Area of Steel As = 12,938 mm2, and p = 2.02 %
Pu / fck b D = 0.19 and p / fck = 0.058

Ag = 640,000 mm2
From 39.6, Puz = 0.45fck x Ac + 0.75fy x Asc = 9876 + 4852 = 14,728 kN
and Pu / Puz = 4270 / 14728 = 0.29 Thereforen = 1.1

d' / D (about xx-axis) = 0.08

Hence Chart or Table for d' / D = 0.10 will be used (Chart Number47 )
Mux1 / fck bD2 = 0.100
Hence, Mux1 = 1792 kNm and Mux / Mux1 = 0.25 (Based on STAAD moments)
0.25 (Max of min. ecc. And STAAD BMs)

d' / b (about yy-axis) = 0.08

Hence Chart or Table for d' / D = 0.10 will be used (Chart Number47 )
Muy1 / fck Db2 = 0.092
Hence, Muy1 = 1649 kNm and Muy / Muy1 = 0.91 (Based on STAAD moments)
0.91 (Max of min. ecc. And STAAD BMs)

From IS 456:2000 Clause 39.6:

(Mux / Mux1)^ n + (Muy / Muy1)^ n = 1.09 REDESIGN Column
= 1.09 REDESIGN Column
