Ti 1010

This document outlines a procedure for determining total iron binding capacity (TIBC) using a colorimetric method. The procedure involves adding excess iron to saturate transferrin in a serum sample, precipitating unbound iron with magnesium carbonate, then measuring the remaining iron concentration to calculate TIBC. Quality controls use multi-sera samples of normal and elevated iron levels. The supernatant absorbance is measured using an iron kit and the TIBC calculated based on a standard curve. Normal TIBC ranges from 46.4 to 69.5 micromoles per liter.
