f(x) is the output (an element of the range). Graphically, the graph is y = f(x).

Lesson idea implementation:


The students will create a concept map to develop their understanding of functions and relations. I will
introduce the project using a KHAN ACADEMY video, which discusses the difference between a function and
relation. Students will have already studied relations and been introduced to the criteria of a function. This
lesson will take one class period (45 minutes) to complete. Students will work in pairs to complete the
activity. If students create a simple map, then I will encourage them to think of more ideas and relationships.
Once each pair finishes their map, they will split up and find another partner to compare maps. Then, once
the jigsaw is complete, original partners will meet again, determine if they need to revise their map, and
present their final map to the class. As a group, we will create a class map using components from every
groups map. The students have a choice in how to create their map, as well as what elements to include.
I will assess student learning through the completion of their map. I will write comments on areas they
missed or great connections that they made between functions and relations. The final product will be useful
for differentiation because it gives students a visual tool to use when identifying functions. This will help

students understand why a representation is or is not a relation or a function. The students will be proud of
their finished work and it will provide a helpful learning tool to remember and apply criteria of a function. To
extend learning to higher levels, students could create a voice over to explain the map and posting it as an
online resource for other students to use. This would make the project a LoTi 5.
