Trainees Handbook
Description:

This programme is designed for people who are interested in teaching English and
want to develop a professional teaching career based on an initial certification.

Objectives:

Certify their knowledge in teaching English as a foreign language at middle


schools through university level.

Develop professionals who understand all aspects of teaching English as a


foreign language and are able to meet the learning needs of adolescents and
adults (up to a B1 level CEFR).

Reinforce their knowledge of the language and its teaching and learning
process through practice.

Consolidate planning and teaching performance abilities by always taking


learners needs and styles.

Monitor learners linguistic development.

Course Length:

180 hours distributed as follows:


150 theoretical and practical hours.
15 hours of teaching practice and feedback.
15 hours of observation, class planning and research.

Contents:

5 modules with 10 integrated components:

1. Programmes and contexts of teaching and learning.


2. Learning Theories. Language and Teaching analysis.
3. Teaching of key elements of L2.
4. Teaching of speaking skills: spoken and written.
5. Teaching of English as a Second Language and Methods and Approaches.
6. Planning and Teaching of language with real students.
7. Material and Resources design.

Minimum Required Profile to enter the course:

a) Minimum 18 years old.


b) Must have High-school diploma.
c) Minimum English level: B2 (FCE).
d) Demonstrate sound interest and appreciation for the Teaching profession during
the oral interview.

Candidates Profile after the Course:


The Trainee will be able to teach English as a Second Language effectively and
efficiently to teenagers and adults in private and public sectors.

Assessment Scheme:

The Teacher Training Course evaluates 3 aspects; Methodology, Lesson Planning and
Teaching Practice. These are divided as follows:

Methodology:
o 50% - 5 module tests.
o 20% - 5 observation reports.
o 30% - Teaching Practice Reports. (This will be determined according to
the number of teaching practices the student went through.)
Lesson Planning:
o 50% - Lesson Planning.
o 25% - 1 final essay about the material used during their teaching practices
and how he/she will use their material in their future (250-400 words).
o 25% - Portfolio with all material created during their practices and their
reports.
Teaching Practice:
o 100% - Teaching Practice.
Note: All teaching practices must accumulate, at least, 2.5 hours per candidate. The
organisation and logistics will be based on the documents from the programme.
