2 - Earthing Calculation No.1

1) The document provides an earthing calculation for low voltage and lightning protection systems for an NCMS Tower project. It calculates that 25 ground rods connected in a mesh configuration would achieve an earth resistance of less than 3 ohms as required by project specifications. 2) Using formulas from BS 7430:2011, it calculates the resistance of individual rods and the total mesh resistance based on soil resistivity, rod dimensions, and mesh layout. 3) It notes that actual soil resistivity may vary on site and final resistance should be verified after installation, and the system requires regular maintenance to ensure the earth loop remains intact.

Subject : Earthing Calculation for LV&LPS . Sr. Electrical Design Engineer
Date : Tuesday, October 4, 2016 For Building Services & Infrastructure Networks
Dear Sir,
This is in reference to the above project. Please find below a calculation for Earth Resistance as per the soil resistivity report received from your side
The desired resistance to earth value should be less than or equal to 3 as per Project specification. Please see below the calculation that is used to achieve the
same.

1) The grid shall be buried under the waterproof layer by 0.6-0.8 mtr in the soil .
Notes :
2)

As per BS 7430:2011+A_1:2015 recommendations, the calculation for resistance to earth is done below using this

Rr () 162.9875

1)
Where :

is the resistivity of soil, in ohm metres (m); 500

L is the length of the electrode, in metres (m); 3
d is the diameter of the rod, in metres (m). 0.019

The resistance RTOT of rods set out in a hollow square may be calculated from:

RTOT = 10.251

Total number of ground driven

rods are 25 nos. connected to
a ring conductor of 120mm2 buried in
raft foundation then why 7 number of
rods are required? It is not understood.
Where : Pls. elaborate it.
is the resistivity of soil, in ohm metres (m); 500
Rr is the resistance of one rod, in oms (); 162.9875
2)
is the number of rods used as electrodes (see the note to
N 25
Table 2);
S is the spacing of rods, in metres (m); 6
is the factor in Table 2; 7.03
n Number of Rods side of the square. 7
0.081415

No. of ground driven

rods are 25 not 7?
Pls. confirm.
The resistance of a mesh (grid) Rm ohms () may be calculated from: ( IN BASEMENT )

Rm = 10.8247

3) where: How did you get

these values?
is the resistivity of soil, in ohm metres (m); 500

A is the actual area covered by the mesh, in square metres (m2); 650

L is the total length of strip used in the mesh, in metres (m). 234

The Total Parallel Resistance :

4) 1/Rtotal = 1/RTOT + 1/RM Rtotal = 5.265

It is important to note that the soil characteristics vary from each other from one location to another on the same site. Actual resistivity calculation should be under taken on
different locations on site in order to verify the calculation after installation of Earth Rods. Also the achieved resistance is based on assumptions of regular maintenance of the
earthing system as per the BS EN 62305 standard ensuring that the loop conductor is not broken or disconnected at any point within
the network. We hope the above is in line with the requirement and should you need any clarification, please do contact us.

Thanks & regards,

Mohammad Ziad
