About the University
National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) was established in March 1991 for promotion of higher scientific education
in the country, especially in the fields of science and technology by providing stable and disciplined academic environment
together with need-based research, pertinent to industrial requirements. The University was granted its Charter in 1993. Over the
years, the university has expanded in scope, services and stature and has emerged as a leading comprehensive University in the
public sector.
Within two decades, NUST has achieved important milestones and gained immense significance as an institution of higher
education in Pakistan. The University produces professionals and researchers of very high calibre, capable of developing
indigenous technologies to meet the growing demands of the 21st century. It is envisioned to grow as a centre of excellence for the
countrys scientific and technological progress. An outstanding feature of the University is that while maintaining traditional values
of excellence in teaching and research, it challenges conventional practices and creates new ways of developing and delivering
courses, pertaining to emerging and cutting-edge disciplines, on most modern lines.
NUST is a new-age university defining new frontiers in teaching and research. The programmes are distinctive for their high-quality
research orientation. Notwithstanding the significance of undergraduate courses, there is ever-growing emphasis on postgraduate
studies and research output. Creativity and innovation are embedded as core values in all scholastic activities. The conducive
academic environment at the campuses facilitates educational pursuits.
NUST has developed linkages with international universities of repute to ensure two-way flow of knowledge and to be in step
with modern trends. Split programmes and visits of eminent professors from reputed foreign universities is a regular feature of
the academic activity. These eminent scholars deliver lectures on the latest developments in their respective fields and also help

Department of Behavioral Sciences
At present, we are exploring how we can create a bridge between field of Behavioral Sciences and other disciplines at
NUST, therefore inputs from field of Behavioral Sciences can be used to maximize outputs from other fields like Mechanical
Engineering, Information Technology, Medical Sciences, Media Sciences, Art and Architecture. The interdisciplinary research
and practice can be one way to achieve the objectives, however, there is lot more needed to be done to enable scientists
and practitioners from different disciplines to learn from each others languages, attend the resonances that separate their
sciences, and develop new conceptual frameworks across their disciplinary boundaries. The Department of Behavioral Sciences
(DBS) at NUST understands its importance and looks forward to find ways for continuous improvement in specialized courses,
interdisciplinary research activities and publications. The aim is to build a learning community that invites students and scholars

offers specialization in individual adult and child psycho-diagnostics and assessments; and Clinical Community track would
focus on Interventions in community settings for both behavioral and emotional issues and foster resilience among the at-risk
segments of society. Our focus is on individuals and communities, and the relationship between the two. In addition, mental
health practitioners who graduate from DBS will demonstrate qualities of leadership, professionalism, critical thinking and
empathy. Our goal is to prepare a team of mental health practitioners who are capable enough to establish services and adjunct
facilities for improving mental health of children, adolescents and adults.

PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies (PCS)
Institutions & Programmes (CIPS)
The objective of PCS program, at the PhD level is to train students in understanding the causes of conflicts and the possibilities
of exploring peaceful and nonviolent solutions to problems. This requires both theoretical and practical understanding of conflict
resolution with lessons from around the world. The products of the CIPS PCS programs will be potential troubleshooters in
conflict areas within the society, industry and within the comity of nations.
The PCS program encourages investigations into local, regional and international conflicts. Domestically it is aimed to produce
studies on serious issues afflicting our society like radicalism, terrorism, separatism, ethnic-nationalism, parochialism etc.
Internationally it will cover issues such as peacekeeping, peace building and conflict resolution in areas wracked by internal and
external wars, famine and poverty. The purpose would be to find timely remedies via policymaking.
Thematically, there is equal focus on traditional and non-traditional security issues. Considering the scope and vision of CIPS, PhD
students are directed to focus their research on identifying important steps towards an environment of sustainable peace that
comprises of creating security space (peacekeeping), creating humanitarian space, and creating political space. In doing so, it
endeavors to find a common link between peacekeeping, peacemaking and peace building.
PCS serves as an intellectual sounding board for governmental policy planners and is ready to facilitate them in preparing their
locus standi for articulation at international forums, such as the UN and affiliated international agencies. It will also help officials
to sharpen their negotiation skills on technical and legal issues, for instance climate change.
For PCS graduates, there is a huge job market within the international and local development agencies operating in Pakistan
International agencies are focusing on the causes of conflict in the region and this trend is likely to continue in the foreseeable
future. There is also a shortage of highly qualified graduates in the field of PCS in Pakistan in areas like journalism, think tanks and
the industry. The PCS program will provide the first step in enabling CIPS to become center of excellence and a recognized think
tank on issues of peace and conflict at the national, regional and international level.
Educational Objectives
