Software Package for Line Design
STRIs focus areas cover overhead line and substation design as
well as optimal selection of insulation for HVDC and HVAC
transmission systems. During many years of applied research
projects in the area of design and operation of overhead lines and
substations, STRI has developed a number of unique software
programs mainly for use by power utility engineers.
Insulator Selection Tool (IST) and Line Performance Estimator
(LPE)
In 2002, STRI developed two unique software programs called IST
and LPE intended for statistical dimensioning of the insulation of
lines and substations based on availability requirements. The
programs are based on the statistical principles invented in Russia,
further developed by STRI, and presently fully accepted by IEC
(60815-1). Since 2004 these programs have been used in a huge
number of practical projects for both AC and DC and by a number
of power utilities, manufacturers, and consulting companies around
the world (ESKOM, KEPCO, NamPower, Svenska kraftnt, Statnett,
Vattenfall, ABB, LAPP, Sediver, Power Engineers, etc.).
The IST/LPE programs introduce the following benefits for the user:
Practical guidance when designing new lines or upgrading
existing lines
Enable technical comparison of different line insulators based on
availability requirements
Identify the weakest part of a transmission line and the main
cause of outages
Excellent tools for increasing and maintaining engineering know-
how within the company

EMF/AN Calculator (EAC)
The EAC program is used to calculate electric and magnetic fields
as well as the audible noise level in rain in the vicinity of AC
transmission lines. The main features of the program are:
The line towers may be arbitrarily positioned, allowing e.g. angle
towers, line crossings, etc. Up to six transmission lines may be
included.
Each line may be a single-circuit, double-circuit or split-phase
line.
Conductors may be arbitrarily positioned at each tower.
Conductor sag is considered
I-Line
The web-based program I-Line calculates the thermal current
loading capability of overhead conductors using an editable
conductor database.
