Shear Force & Bending Moment Assignment

The document provides instructions for 4 assignments involving the calculation of support reactions, shear forces, and bending moments for beams and frames. Students are asked to: 1) Analyze a simply supported beam and draw shear force and bending moment diagrams. 2) Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams for a beam with an internal hinge. 3) Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams for a plane frame. 4) Given a shear force diagram, draw the corresponding loading diagram and bending moment diagram for a beam with an overhang.

Note: (i) S is your class serial number; (ii) Submission is due on 6 Oct 2011

1. For the simply supported beam shown in Fig. 1, calculate the support reactions, find the shear
force and bending moment equations, and sketch the shear force and bending moment diagrams
indicating all salient points. Given: a = (2.3 + S/20) m.

2. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams of the beam shown in Fig. 2. Note that there
is an internal hinge at point B.
3. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the plane frame depicted in Fig.3.

4. Given the shear force diagram in Fig. 4, draw the corresponding loading diagram for the simply
supported beam of span 10 m with a 2m overhang at the right. A couple moment of M kNm is
known to act at the free right end. Draw the bending moment diagram also. The beam has a total
length of 10m.
