Tung Chung West ( Yat Tung Estate ) vs Tung Chung New Center

Tung Chung, as one of the new towns, has been under development for

more than 10 years to cope with the development of the new airport as

well as the growing population in Hong Kong. However, such

development does not obtain full support from all the residents living

there due to the incomplete and inconsiderate urban planning. It can be

seen that great differences have been made between urban planning of

Tung Chung West and Tung Chung East. Concerning Tung Chung New

Centre, recreational facilities, transportation facilities and shopping malls

have been well-developed EXCEPT medical treatment plants. On the other

hand, Tung Chung West shows the opposite situation. From the

completion of Yat Tung Estate in 2011, there have been a series of

problem of lacking in basic facilities for residents in Yat Tung Estate. These

problems is partly resolved but still requires improvement. This

phenomenon shows that urban planning in the past for Tung Chung has

defects which create todays situation.

Hospital

Official planning for having the North Lantau Hospital in Tung Chung
West was commenced in 2004. Until 2009, funding for construction was

approved by the legislative council and eventually, the hospital started

operation in 2013.

Comparing with the date of commencement of developing Tung Chung

into a new town, the planning of this project is relatively late. The first

phase of Tung Chung development began in 1994 whereas the hospital

plan was proposed in 2004. This make the Tung Chung residents waiting

for more than ten years until the completing of North Lantau Hospital
