Chapter Nine Vivaha Muhurta 1. According to the old texts there are eight types of marriage or vivaha. (i) Brahma: After calling the groom to the house, the bride is given jewels and clothing according to the status, and the ceremony is performed in a good muhurta. The son born out of this union purifies 21 generations of father and mother. (ii) Daiva: The girl is given to the priest during a yajna. This is datva-vivaha. The son born out of this union brings purity to 14 generations of father and mother. The girls married under this system are called devadasis. ii) Arya: Under this system anyone takes two cows or money equivalent to two cows and gives his daughter in marriage to a healthy boy. Child born out of this union lifts 6 generations of father and mother. (iv) Prajapatya: “Follow the path of dharma” is the advice with which the girl is given in marriage to the desirous groom. Child born out of this union graces 6 generations of parents.108 Muhurta Prakarana (v) Asura: The girl is given in marriage after taking money. (vi) Gandharva: A girl and a boy marry each other after falling in love. (vii) Rakshasa: A girl is abducted after fighting. , (viii) Paishacha: It is marrying a girl after cheating, or just abducting her. 2. There are twenty-one faults mentioned below which should be checked in a vivaha. 1. Panchanga Shuddhi: Not counting the day or vara. 2. Udayasta Shuddhi: Lagna, Navamsha lagna lords should be powerful and benefic. 3. Ma€santa (end of the solar month): The beginning 16 ghatis and the ending 16 ghatis of every Surya-sankranti (change of rashi) are rejected. 4. Malefics in 6 vargas (shadvargas): Out of the 6 divisional charts, if benefics are the lords of more than 4 vargas lagnas, the marriage is auspicious, if less than 4 vargas lagna lords are malefics then leave the match. 5. Mars in the eighth house, leave. 6. Trividha Gandanta: If rashi, lagna and nakshatra Gandant present, leave. Venus in 6th house, leave. 8. Kartari: If vivaha lagna or transit Moon has direct malefic in 12th house, and retrogarde malefic in 2nd house, leave.Muhurta Prakarana 109 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14, 15. 16. 17. 18. 19. 20. 21. Transit Moon in 6 or 8 from natal Moon or conjoined with malefics, leave. The vivaha lagna should not be 8th house lagna. Visha-ghati Dur muhurta (bad muhurta). Vara dosha Kranti samya Eclipse and Utpaata nakshatra Kharjoor: The bad yogas like Vishakumbha, Atiganda, Shoolaganda, Vyaghata, Vajra, Vyatipata, Parigh, Vaidhriti Kroora-griha vedha nakshatra Papayukta nakshatra Kunavansha (Kroora navansha) Mahapata Vaidhriti For selecting the vivaha lagna, a critical analysis of the following faults is very important. They are: Jatta, pat, yuti, vedha, jamitra, budha panchaka, ekargala, upagriha, kranti samya and dagdha tithi. The welfare of the couple requires this analysis. These doshas should not be present. (i) Latta: It means to kick. Whichever nakshatra the Sun is transiting over, it will kick 12 nakshatras in front of it, Moon kicks 22 nakshatras behind, Mars 3 nakshatras in front, Mercury 7 nakshatras behind, Jupiter 6 nakshatras in front, Venus 5 nakshatras behind, Saturn 8 nakshatras in front,110 Muhurta Prakarana and Rahu 9 nakshatras behind. (ii) Pat: The vivahas nakshatra that falls at the end of the following yogas is prohibited for marriage. Harshana, Vaidhriti, Sadhya, Vyatipata, Ganda and Shoola yoga. . (iii) Yuti: There should be no planet with Moon specially Venus. If it is a full Moon or exalted Moon, the fault does not apply. Or, if the Moon is aspected by Jupiter, the fault does not apply. (iv) Vedha: Vedha chakics have already been given. There should be no nakshatra vedha. (v) Jamitra: There should be no malefic planet on 14 nakshatras from the vivaha nakshatra. (vi) Mrityu Panchaka: As mentioned earlier, passage of Moon from Dhanishtha to Revati (Kumbha Meena) is called budha panchaka or vana-dosha. From shukla pratipada to the present tithi + lagnarashi + 9 = (If remainder is. . .) 1=mrityu 2 = agni 4=rajya 6= chor (thief) 8 = roga (disease) Panchaka has already been discussed. (vii) Ekargal dosha: Already discussed. (viii) Kranti samya: Sun and Moon are on the same kranti (transit). The best thing is to avoid all the ten doshas. If very necessary, 6 doshas can be compromised with. . Marriage muhurta Tithi — Pratipada of krishna paksha and 2, 3, 5, 7, 10,11,13 of shukla paksha and poornima are auspicious, Usually, while electing a vivaha- muhurta, tithi and vara (day) are not given so much importance as other rectifications. Vara — Good varas are Monday,112 Muhurta Prakarana Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Bad varas are Sunday, Tuesday and Saturday. lo Nakshatra — Rohini, Mrigashirsha, Magha, 3 ( uttaras, Habta, Swati, Anuradha, Modth and Revati The first pada of Magha and Moola and the fourth pada of Revati are not to be used. Yoga — Bad yegas are Atiganda, Ganda, Shoola, Vyaghata, Vyatipata Parigha, Aindra and Vaidhriti, which should be rejected Lagna — Best — 3,6and7 Medium — 2,4,9 and 12 (i) We want marriage to last long, so benefic fixed lagna can be taken. (ii) Either from lagna or janmarashi, 3, 6, 10 and 11 lagnas are good. ‘ . (iii) Either for the groom or the bride, 4, 8 and 12 lagnas from the natal lagna or natal Moon are inauspicious. The eighth house fault is the worst, even if a benefic is posited there. 3. Remedy (i) If the eighth rashi from lagna is 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12, it is not abused. (ii) If the lord of the eighth is posited in Kendra or well posited, - Parihara of dosha. (iii) If ashtamesha (eighth lord) be in shubhaMuhurta Prakarana 113 navamsha, or own, or friend’s navamsha, the ashtama lagna dosha is cancelled. Note: if Doshas Cancelled Mercury 1, 4,5, 9, 10 100 Venus 1, 4,5, 9, 10 200 Jupiter 1, 4,5, 9, 10 1,00,000 If lagna shuddhi, chandra shuddhi and the above positions of Mercury, Jupiter and Venus can be attained, the marriage is really auspicious. The marriage is considered inauspicious if the marriage rashi (Moon in transit is the same as the natal Moon) or marriage lagna is the same as at birth. But, if the lord of lagna and rashi are the same or friends in the natal chart, this defect does not apply. 4. Kartari dosha in vivaha A malefic retrograde planet in the 2nd house and a direct malefic in the 12th house produce kartari dosha. Marraige ina lagna with the said dosha or with two malefics is not good. The Moon, if in paap kartari, also gives unfavourable results, though not as bad as lagna. The 5th, 7th and 9th bhavas should also be free of paap kartari. If the Moon is in vivaha lagna, the following results are obtained: @) Sun — Poverty (ii) Mars — Marana (death)114 Muhurta Prakarana (iii) Mercury — Good (iv) Jupiter -~ Happiness (v) Venus — Enmity (vi) Saturn -- Renunciation (vii) Rahu — Bad results , 5. Remedy As stated earlier in 3 above. 6. Position of different planets in vivaha lagna The following positions are obstructive and hence worth leaving: Planets Bhavas Lagnesha - 6, 8, 12 Sun - 1,7 Moon - 1, 6, 7, 8,12 Mars - 1,7, 8,10 Mercury - 7,8 Jupiter - 7,8 Venus - 3, 6, 7,8 Saturn ~ 1,7,12 Ratu si 1,7 There should be no planet in the 7th house even though a benefic. Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are highly auspicious in 1, 4, 5, 9 and 10 bhavas. Barring the vargottama navamsha, there should not be the last (9th) navamsha in vivaha lagna, Saturn in 12th house, Mars in 10th bhava and the Moon or Venus in 3rd bhava.Muhurta Prakarana 115 Lord of the Moon rashi and Mars are not good in the 8th of vargottama lagna. Mercury, Jupiter and - Venus in the 7th house from the Moon bless, with saubhagya and son. If Jupiter is in Kendra or Trikona, all the faults are cancelled. Mercury, Venus, vargottama lagna, vargottama Moon, all cancel the faults. Lagnesha or lagna navamsha lord, if posited in 1, 4, 10 or 11, all the defects are combusted. If muhurta lagna is assigned the 20 points strength, then the relative strength of planets will be — Lagna - 2; Venus - 2; Mercury - 2; Moon - 5; Sun ~ 3; Jupiter ~ 3; Saturn - 1; Rahu - 1; Ketu ~ 1. Example 1: Date: 20th April 1996, Baisakha shukla triteeya Vara: Saturday; Nakshatra: Rohini; Karana: Bava; Yoga: Saubhagya; Rashi: Vrishabha (Taurus) Boy’s rashi: Scorpio; Girl's rashi: Gemini The marriage took place on 20th April 1996 after midnight. It is a Panchanga shuddha saya, guru bala and chandra bala are all right. No planet is combust. No bad effect on lagna. From the girl’s rashi (3) the vargottama lagna is 8th — fault cancelled. Eighth lord Sun exalted in the 4th house — bad. Lagnesha Saturn is afflicted by Mars and Rahu. Lagna chara but Mercury in the 4th house116 Muhurta Prakarana is cancelling 100 doshas. Exalted 7th lord Moon is in 5th house with the 5th lord. Venus in its own house but aspected by Saturn — lagna lord. Jupiter in the 12th not good but in its own house — good. Lagna is movable, lagnesha is afflicted, Moon 7th lord with Venus — these points are making muhurta faulty. The married life is unhappy. Under the circumstances, one should see and try that kanya-daan takes place when navamsha is strong and fixed, so that the marriage can be saved. Example 2: Pandits elected the muhurta for 6th March 1992. Phalguna shukla paksha dwiteeya (2), Friday; Nakshatra — Uttara Bhadra; Yoga — Shubha; Karana — Balava; Rashi — Meena; Fulera dooj, Abuj saya — which is otherwise also auspicious. Girl’s janmarashi — Vrishchika (8) Boy’s janmarashi — Makar (10). From Makara rashi Jupiter in ashtama (8th) house is not good; hence, pooja has to be performed. From girl's rashi Scorpio, Sun and Jupiter are not good. But because the vivaha was essential, other factors being good, parents were advised shanti pooja. Date: 6-3-1992 NavamshaMuhurta Prakarana 117 Tula lagna is acceptable. Lagna is free of any influence excepting Saturn — lord of 4th and Sth houses — aspecting the lagna — friend’s house. Venus in the 4th house is removing 200 doshas. Seventh lord Mars is exalted in the 4th, aspects its own house. Jupiter is aspecting the 7th. Moon not good in the 6th house. Navamsha: Fixed lagna, Mercury in own house, Jupiter vargottama, Sun exalted. Kanyadaan should take place in an auspicious navamsha. Navamsha has removed the inauspiciousness of chara lagna. The married life is good. Marriage is actually a second birth (dwijanma). The related bhava position from vivaha lagna should be good. In earlier days, cattle were taken out for grazing to outskirts of the city. In the evening when cows returned home and the dust was lifted in the air by their hoofs, that time was called the godhuli vela. Godhuli lagna is prescribed only for lower castes. As far as possible, one should aim at the best possible muhurta and try to avoid gedhuli muhurta.
