the year under review, with unit sales increasing by 10% to the new record level of 2,198,000
vehicles and revenue rising by 7% to 89.3 billion. We were also able to gain market share in
nearly all regions.

ercedes-Benz achieves record sales for the seventh year in a row

M
2016 was the best year in the history of Mercedes-Benz. The Mercedes-Benz brand was able
to increase its unit sales by 9% to 2,053,500 vehicles in 2016. Global growth at Mercedes-Benz
thus not only outpaced that of its German competitors; the division also delivered more pre-
mium-segment vehicles worldwide than any other automaker. This success is primarily the result
of high sales in China, the United States, and Germany. Among other things, M ercedes-Benz
was the premium brand with the most new vehicle registrations in Germany and several
other core European markets, as well as in the United States, Canada, Japan, and South Korea.
Mercedes-Benz has a larger and more diverse range of models than ever before.
For M ercedes-Benz, 2016 was the seventh record year in a row. This shows that our growth
strategy is working.

our range of SUVs to include the all-new GLC Coup. This sports car among the mid-size SUVs
from Mercedes-Benz also makes a big impression with its typical M ercedes safety features,
state-of-the-art assistance systems, and outstanding sporty-dynamic character. With sales
of more than 700,000 units, SUVs were the strongest segment at Mercedes-Benz in 2016.

EQ: electric mobility redefined

With the Concept EQ, Mercedes-Benz demonstrated at the Paris Motor Show 2016 how electric
cars can soon move into the fast lane. The concept car, which has the appearance of a sporty
SUV coup, offers a preview of a new generation of vehicles with battery-electric drives.
With a range of up to 500 kilometers and the typical Mercedes strengths of safety, comfort,
functionality, and connectivity, the Concept EQ meets every demand in terms of cutting-edge
sustainable mobility. The vehicle also features innovative solutions inside including a completely
new interior concept. The Concept EQ offers a preview of the new EQ product brand for

The production and procurement network

In 2016, we further increased production and manufactured more cars than ever before.
As a result, we achieved our sixth production record in succession. In line with its growth
strategy, Mercedes-Benz Cars is continually enhancing its flexible and efficient production
network, which now encompasses 29 locations worldwide. Because our plants on four continents
are running at full capacity, we are expanding our production capacities by adding new
locations and cooperating more extensively with partners. For example, we are building a
new engine plant in Jawor, Poland, where we will manufacture highly efficient four-cylinder
engines for M ercedes-Benz cars. We are also building a second plant in Kecskemt, Hungary,
for the flexible production of front and rear-wheel-drive automobiles. As lead plants and
competence centers, our facilities in Germany form the backbone of the global production
organization. Rastatt, for example, is the lead plant within our compact car production
network, which is currently preparing itself for the launch of the new generation of compact
cars starting in 2018.

range of M ercedes me stores worldwide since 2014.

CO2 emissions at the previous years level

Mercedes-Benz Cars makes a continual effort to reduce the fuel consumption of its vehicles
while enhancing their performance. As early as 2015, we were able to reduce the CO2 emissions
of newly registered vehicles from M ercedes-Benz Cars in the European Union to an average
of 123 grams per kilometer. This means we achieved our 2016 target of 125 g/km ahead of
schedule. We were able to maintain the value of 123 g/km in 2016, even though our sales
shifted toward the intermediate and luxury segments. We achieved this feat with the help of
technological innovations that further reduced the CO2 emissions of our individual models.
This was made possible by both the continual optimization of our combustion engines and the
great efficiency offered by our hybrid drives. Our efforts are supported here by new and
very economical models, for example with lightweight designs and significantly improved
aerodynamics that have enabled us to exploit further fuel-saving potential. We plan to use
innovative technologies for locally emission-free mobility and, in particular, new hybrid models
in order to further reduce the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of our cars.

Positioning
The new smart fortwo affirms its pioneering role as the perfect car for urban use, as
testified by its compact exterior dimensions, great spaciousness, and further improved
safety and comfort features.
The new generation of the smart fortwo retains the attributes that are typical of the brand:
uncompromising short length, unmatched agility, the tridion safety cell, the two-tone con-
cept, and the plastic body panels.

Highlights
An approximately 10 centimeter wider track has substantially improved the cars driving
properties and interior comfort compared to the predecessor model.
However, the unchanged length of 2.69 meters and unparalleled small turning circle of
6.95meters ensure that the smart fits into any parking space.
The six-speed DCT ensures good ride comfort and driving pleasure in urban areas.

Product Range
The new model series is also offered with a sporty manual transmission.
The smart fortwo comes with an extensive array of safety and comfort features, including
Crosswind Assist, proximity control, a reversing camera, a lane-keeping warning system,

and two multi-media system variants.
