The RF input power coupled to the power sensor i s dissipated by
th e l oad impedance of the power sensin g devi ce. Th e do output of
th e power sensing d evice is converte d to 220 Hz ac si gna l by
samplin g gate (chopper) circuit. The ac sign al, whi c h i s propor-

The RAN GE switch attenuato network s attenuate th e ac signal

sampling gate ci rcuit (in th e power sensor) are driven in ph ase
by the 220 Hz Mul tivbrator.
A 4U4B is connected as v oltage follower between the input
signal ground and signal g round . Thi s circuit ensures min-

inating t he possibility of unreliable readin gs. High current flow,
through t h e ground return ofcabl es which are greater than 5 feet

The First Amplifier of the P ower Meter and t he power sensor's

750; do bias is set by A4R1, R 2, R 6, R 10 and R11.

Second Amplifier
A4U2 and U3 and associated components are operational ampli-
fiers with voltage gains of about 25 each. Gain for A4U2 is deter-
mined by MR22 and R23; for A4U3 by A4R27 and R28. Bias
current is provided for A4U3 by MR25.
The tuned amplifiers upper bandpass limit (240 Hz) is set by the
p arallel RC networks of 4C11 and R22, A4C14 and R27 and
parallel RC network in the First Amplifier.
Th ird Amplifier
A4U4A and its associated components form an operational
a mplifier' stage with variable voltage gain from 1.3 to 3.4. The
front panel CAL ADJ gain control is set to compensate for differ-
ences in sensitivity o f individual power sensors. The gain is
determined by MR24, R21 and the CAL ADJ control R1 .

General
Before attempting to troubleshoot the circuits represented by this
schematic, verify that the p ower supply is operating properly.
The voltage on 9 should be +12 Vdc; on 10, -12 Vdc.
To exhibit the correct wavefo rms in the R ANGE
switch positions indicated, the p owe r sensor (as
part of the measurement syste m) must meas ure
power from -35 to +20 dBm into 50 load.

To troubleshoot th e hybrid operational amplifier effectiv ely, con-

DC Amplifier
The inputto the DC Amplifier is filtered by two-stage Low Pass
Filter A4R29 and C17; R30 and C18. On the three most sensitive
ranges additional filtering is introduced by components which
are mounted on the 1 Switch Assembly.
Servo Amplifier
The DC Amplifier output is coupled to A4R39, the Servo Amplifier
input. Because of the high do gain (=7000) small do output from
the DC Amplifier U5 produces l arge error voltage at the Servo
Amplifier U6 output . When the ZERO switch is pressed, this error
voltage is coupled to the Auto Zero circuit.
Capacitor A4C21 with R43 gives the Servo Amplifier the charac-
teristics of low pass filter . The Auto Zero Offset Control A4R42
is set to remove any do offset voltage introduced by the Servo
Amplifier.
The error voltage from the Servo Amplifier biases Q1 which pro-
duces an equivalent error voltage at Q1 source. This voltage is
attenuated by A4A1R2, A4A1R4 and A4R74. The voltage is
further attenuated in the power sensor and is coupled across the
ambient temperature do output of the power sensing d evice as
correction voltage. The algebraic sum o f the do voltages is ampli-
fied a nd coupled back to the Auto Z ero input. Because the feed-
ack loop is negative path, the correction voltage across the
power sensing device output b egins to change and continues to do
S ERVICE S HEET 3 (Cont'd)
so until it is the same level but opposite polarity as the p ower
sensing device output . The input to the Power Meter circuits goes
to zero which means the DC Amplifier output i s also zero. W hen
the ZERO switch is released, relay 4 1 1 opens and the final
Servo Amplifier error voltage i s stored on A4A1C1 at the high
impedance input to A4A1Q1. The correction voltage across the
power sensing device remains constant as long as the error vol-
tage remains on C1.
A4R46, R45 and A4A1R4 form voltage divider stick. The Bal-
ance control A4R46 removes the do offset introduced by t he Auto
Zero circuit thus centering its effective range at 0 Vdc.

General
Power sources for the Po w e r Mete r are lin e (Mains) power or the
rechargea ble battery. If t h e battery is being u sed as power
source, it will rece ive cha rging c urrent any t ime the lin e v oltage
i s coupled to the instrum e nt a nd the LINE switch is set to ON.
When t he lin e voltage is di sconnected, the battery automatically
becomes the power source.
CA UTIO N
The explanation of the 24V Series Regulator is
based on the assumption that 9 is the refe rence
ground and t he regulato r o utput is 24 Vdc at
.
C25 and R61 form l ow pass filter which reduces the high gain of
t he circuit at high frequencies thus preventing unwanted oscilla-
tions. R59 and C24 form noise filter for the zener diode.
Battery Test
NOTE
The batte ry test circuit is in operation any time the
LINE switch is set to ON; h oweve r, t he only time
the mete r indication is meaningful i s when t h e
batte ry is supplying power.

50 MH z Oscillator
The oscill ator circuit i s made up of common emitter amplifier Q1
and its associated co mponents. Resistors R 10, R 11, R12 and R 13
bias Q1 for an emitter c urrent of appr oxim ate ly 5 mA. The
n-network t uned cir cuit (C9, L 2, C10 and C11) d ete rmines the
operating frequency. The amplifi er ac gain is set by t he operating
circuit impedance across th e tuned circuit and t he emitter resistor
R15 (which is ac co upl ed to gro und by C 12) . The positive feedback
required to sustai n oscill at ion i s satisfied in t his circuit. Phase
shift of 180 i s char acte ri sti c of both common-emitter t ransistor
amplifiers and 7r-network tuned circuits. This feedback is coupled
t hrough C9 and C10, back to th e base o f Q1 .
ALC L oo p
At the positive peak of each cycle, current momen ta rily flows
from the feedback loop through peak detector diode C R2 to C7.
The resultant sto red charge is coupled, as d o input v oltage, to
pin 3 of U2. The detector output is compared to v ery stable
reference input by comparator U2. Any difference between the
comparato r's input voltages produces an error voltage at the do
output. The comparator output i s coupled to r eactance v oltage
divid er, capacitor C9 and varactor CR3. As the error output volt-
age goes more positive the capacitive r eactance of CR3 decreases,
which reduces the oscill ato r feedback. Conversely, more nega-
tive output v oltage will increase the feedback. F or example, if the
oscillator o utput were to suddenly increase, the detector output
would b ecome more positive. The comparator output would
become m or e pos itive, l ower CR3 r eactance would decrease the
feedback to Q1 whi c h forces the oscill ato r output level back to i ts
origin al level. If t h e R 4 LEVEL ADJ control were adjusted for
more positive referen ce v ol tage, the comparato r output would go
more negativ e, t he feedb ack would increase, allowin g the oscill a-
tor output to in cr ease. Therefore, the peak detector output would
increase until it equal s the comparato r reference level input, thus
establishin g hig her leveled-output signal fro m t he oscill ato r.
