PROBLEM STATEMENT:.
In WDM networks we have three switching methods:
Circuit switching,
Packet switching,
OBS
Optical Burst Switching (OBS) , is an intermediate mechanism for Wavelength division
multiplexing networks using the advantages of both packet and circuit switching and
taking in account their limitations.
As the traffic is becoming busty, so for that circuit and packet switching are not suitable
for that reason we move on to OBS. An optical burst consists of two parts, header and
data burst. The header is called Control burst and is transmitted ahead of data burst. Data
burst are disassembled at the egress node. The ingress and egress node are route to access
the network. The nodes on which signaling and routing takes place are called core nodes.
The process of combining several packets into burst is called burst assembly. During
burst assembly edge node buffers the data where electronic RAM is easily available. We
transmit the control burst over separate control channel. The control message has source
and destination addresses and the wavelength on which clients wants to send data. The
control message optical/electronic/optical conversion at each intermediate node and
reserves the resources for data burst and is called burst reservation.
We will implement the edge node in C2OBS network.
To improve the performance of OBS, a new network architecture is proposed i-e C2OBS
(Cooperative cluster optical burst switching) which divides the network into small
manageable partitions called zones. A zone is headed by zone head and communicates
with other zones using zonal gateways. To reduce the contention at intermediate core
nodes in optical burst switching C2OBS is suggested.
The OBS network consists of Edge node and core node. Edge node is electronic router
and assembler/de-assembler. It has small multiple packets which are assembled in large
data units. The burst are then routed through the network. Core node has a optical
switching matrix and use WDM technologies. OBS uses transparent optical paths for the
routing of data.
