Dear Indra,

How are you? I hope you are fine. My family and I are doing just fine.
My school celebrated Teachers Day last week. Activities on that day
started at 7.30 a.m. First we had an assembly in the school hall. The principal
and all the teachers were seated on a colourful and nicely decorated stage.
The school principal gave a speech. He reminded students to study
hard and develop good qualities. This is our way of showing our appreciation to
our teachers for their hard work. At the end of the speech, we clapped loudly to
show our appreciation to our teachers.
Then the Head Prefect delivered a speech. He thanked the teachers for
their endurance and compassion all this while. He also recited a poem entitled
KASIH GURU. This was followed by our class parties. At the parties, we ate
the food that we had brought such as fried noodles, cakes and sandwiches. We
also sang, danced and played indoor games. I enjoyed playing the Musical
Chairs.
After 12 noon, some outdoor games were played. That was the most
exciting event of the day. Teachers and students played various interesting
games like sack race, football, throwing balloons and other relay games. The
students won most of the games. The final event was a concert. Popular songs
were rendered by some students and traditional dances were performed by the
Cultural Club. By then, we were all tired but happy because we had had a
whale of a time that day.
How about the Teachers Day celebration in your school? Do tell me
about it in your next letter. Take care and bye.

P12 do not leave used plates and glasses on table

SAMPLE ANSWER:

Good morning to the principal, teachers and my fellow students. I am Intro-

the president of the Junior Environment Club of our school and I have been duction
invited to give a speech on how to keep our school clean.
First and foremost, we should keep our classrooms clean. We must
sweep our classrooms every day and always keep our waste paper P1
baskets empty. We must also remember to wipe the windows daily. We P2
should not litter everywhere in our classrooms. Rubbish must be thrown P6
into waste paper baskets. We should not let rubbish overflow the waste P7
paper baskets as it will be an eyesore.
In addition we must remember to flush toilets after using them. It is P3
very unhealthy to leave toilets not flushed as they will emit a stench. We
must not throw objects into toilet bowls. This will cause the toilet bowls P9
to clog. We should also keep the sinks clean by not throwing tissues P4
and rubbish into them. After all, we are the ones who use the toilets so P10
we should not dirty them.

Besides this, we should also put all used plates and glasses in P5
proper places such as in basins provided in the canteen. We should not P11
leave food scraps everywhere as it will attract flies. Moreover used
plates and glasses should not be left on the canteen tables. In this way P12

SUMMARY QUESTIONS for PRACTICE

PRACTICE 1:-
Read the passage below and answer the question that follows:
Collecting coins is an interesting hobby. Most people indulge in this hobby 1
to occupy their free time. Collecting coins is also considered a form of relaxation 2
Coins come in different shapes, sizes and denominations. Coins also show 3
important landmarks and symbols of a particular country. Thus this hobby enriches 4
ones geographical and historical knowledge of countries. 5
Collecting coins is not just a pastime. We can learn about personalities such 6
as kings, queens and leaders of various countries. Collecting coins also enables us 7
to make new friends. We will be able to widen our circle of friends. 8
It is good if family members also share the interest as they would be able to 9
give you the extra pieces that they have collected from other places and vice versa. 10
This would enhance family ties. 11
If there is a need, we can always sell the coins. The older and rarer the coin 12
is, the higher the price it fetches. You may be surprised that one day, you might be 13
the proud owner of the rarest coins. 14

PRACTICE 2:-
Read the passage below and answer the question that follows:
Hello. How are you? Good morning, Have you eaten yet? Where are you 1
going? These are greetings which people use when they meet each other. These 2
are common greetings used by people. 3
A greeting is a way of being friendly to someone. It is not necessary to 4
describe your true condition or feeling. In fact, people reply to the questions with a 5
fixed expression such as Im fine, thanks or Im very well. It is a way of being 6
polite where you address them when you meet them unexpectedly. It is also a way 7
of starting a conversation. People usually nod their head or just smile when they do 8
not intend to start a conversation. 9
Usually a question is used as a greeting: Where are you going? Hows 10
everything with you? But questions like these are not real questions. They do not 11
require a full answer or even a true one. 12
A greeting is usually followed by small talk. Small talk means the little things 13
we talk about at the start of a conversation. People often talk about suitable topics 14
for small talks such as the weather as it is a safe topic compared to religion or 15
politics. Thus, this makes meeting people easier and more comfortable. 16

PRACTICE 3:-
Read the passage below and answer the question that follows:

In camping, follow these golden rules. Camp on bare ground where possible. The
campsite should be away from trails and dead trees. Avoid slopes, high ridges and wet sites. Do
not choose campsites that are below flood level or are highly frequented by wildlife. Set up camp
as early as possible and familiarize yourself with the surroundings. This helps to prevent injuries
from moving about in the dark at night. Make sure that you bring enough food to last the trip. The
food can be fresh, dried or canned. Avoid bringing any food with a strong smell.
You will need at least two litres of water per person per day. Use water from a natural
source such as a spring. Make sure all water is boiled to eliminate bacteria and contamination.
Build your fire away from the tent. Do not cook inside the tent, even if you are using a gas
canister. Never burn rubbish, especially plastic, as the fumes are toxic. Make sure the fire is
completely put out before you break camp.
Do remember your camp etiquette. The campsite is part of nature. In areas of sensitive
environments, vegetation takes a long time to recover, so no holes should be dug around there at
all.

Write a summary on the rules of camping.
